Only two wins out of seven for the affiliates on Canada Day Eve. Vancouver and the boys in the Gulf Coast celebrated it the right way thanks to a couple of brothers. Three one-run losses and two blowouts were on the negative side of the ledger. Dunedin had the night off.
Syracuse 5 Buffalo 4 (11 Innings)
Syracuse, NY - The Bisons squandered a pair of two-run leads to the Nationals affiliate in this one. Aaron Sanchez experienced his longest outing in Triple-A, pitching seven solid innings and giving up three runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit batter. He struck out a pair and 14 of his 16 outs were on the ground. Brett Cecil was victimized for a solo homer among two hits in his one inning. Steve Delabar worked around a hit and two walks in two scoreless frames while racking up two K's. Luis Ayala (1-2) got just one out before serving up a walk-off homer.
An A.J. Jimenez RBI triple and an Andy LaRoche sacrifice fly got the Herd going in the second. Kevin Pillar singled home a run and Dan Johnson doubled home Pillar in the seventh. Jimenez and Johnson had two-hit games with a walk apiece. Ryan Goins was also a part of the two-hit club. Erik Kratz singled and walked twice. Pillar, LaRoche and Jonathan Diaz all had a hit and a walk with Pillar stealing his 11th base. Kenny Wilson was 0-for-5. Buffalo was 1-for-8 with 12 men left on base.
Reading 7 New Hampshire 6
Reading, PA - The Fisher Cats scored a come-from-ahead loss as they blew a 6-1 lead against the Fightin Phils. It was not a case of Great Scott on the mound for the Fisher Cats. Scott Copeland coughed up six runs (five earned) over six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks. He struck out four and collected nine ground ball outs. Scott Gracey (3-4) surrendered the winning run on two hits, two walks (one intentional) and a hit by pitch over two frames. He did strike out three.
A Mike McDade single and a Kevin Nolan sac fly staked New Hampshire to a 2-1 lead in the first two innings before Andy Burns connected for a three-run homer in the third. Another run was added on an error in the sixth. McDade had a 4-for-5 night while Burns and Jon Berti each had a hit and a base on balls. Nolan, Matt Newman, Corey Aldridge and Derrick Chung also found the hit column. Dalton Pompey had a walk and a stolen base while Berti swiped his 25th bag of the year.
Great Lakes 2 Lansing 1
Midland, MI - There was no sweet music in this one. Frank Viola III (2-2) made it through only three innings and gave up the deciding runs in his last frame of work. He gave up three hits, two walks and plunked a pair but he did strike out two. Phil Kish spun three shutout frames of three-hit ball with two K's and he killed a few worms with seven ground ball outs. Brady Dragmire only surrendered two hits over two shutout innings.
Mitch Nay, Dawel Lugo and Dickie Joe Thon all had doubles in the fourth inning but it only resulted in a single run as Thon's double brought home Nay. D.J. Davis had a three-hit effort that included a triple and his 9th stolen base of the year. Thon chipped in with two hits while Chaz Frank made it on base twice with a single and a plunk. Derrick Loveless and Matt Dean also had hits. Mike Reeves and David Harris were both 0-for-4.
Vancouver 10 Salem-Keizer 2
The first of many! Roemon Fields scored the first run of the game after a two-run single by Franklin Barreto put the C's ahead 2-1.
Vancouver, BC - Miguel Castro (2-1) bounced back from a rough outing by striking out seven batters over five innings. His lone mistake was a solo homer by Giants 2013 first round pick Christian Arroyo in the first inning. That was among three hits and two walks on the Dominican's pitching line. The 6-5 righty also got four outs on the ground. Mark Biggs was victimized for an unearned run on a Kevin Garcia passed ball but did surrender three hits and a walk with only one K over two innings. Jose Fernandez issued just a walk over a scoreless eighth. Garrett Pickens walked the bases loaded but struck out a pair to end the game. Pickens did deliver some chin music to one of the S-K batters after Volcano hurlers plunked five different C's players.
Roemon Fields and Tim Locastro were both plunked by pitches to start the first inning. They pulled off a double steal and came in to score on a Franklin Barreto single. Chris "Killer" Carlson brought home another run with a bases-loaded walk and another run scored on a balk. Carlson singled home a run in the fourth and cleared the bases with a three-run double in the fifth. An infield single by Alexis "Candy" Maldonado plated the 10th run. Locastro and Carlson had two hits and a base on balls each. Maldonado got aboard three times by adding a walk and a plunk. Barreto took one for the team and Fields had a single to get on base twice. Michael De La Cruz had an interesting night. He walked, was hit by a pitch, scored two runs - including one in a home plate collision - and took a foul tip that shook him up. Garcia eventually replaced him behind the dish and he went 1-for-2.
Danville 9 Bluefield 2
Danville, VA - The Jays scored the first two runs of the game in the first two innings. Richard Urena knocked home an Aaron Attaway double and Trent Miller socked one over the wall to start the second. Attaway was on twice by taking one for the team. Rolando Segovia had the other Jays double. Dan Jansen, Austin Davis and Lydell Moseby all had base hits with Moseby's coming in a pinch-hit role. Anthony Alford and Jesus Gonzalez both had bases on balls.
Ryan Borucki (1-1) lasted only 3.2 innings, yielding three runs on three hits and a plunk but had a K-BB total of 5-0 and a GO-FO of 5-2. Chase Mallard stranded a runner for Borucki but was burned for six runs (three earned after a Segovia error at second) on six hits over 3.1 innings. He did have nice peripherals of 2-0 and 6-0 in the K-BB and GO-FO departments respectively. Carlos Ramirez permitted both inherited runners to score but had no runs on his line. He gave up two hits and struck out a batter in his lone inning of work.
GCL Blue Jays 3 GCL Tigers 1
Lakeland, FL - Deiferson Barreto was the hero in this one as his three-run homer in the top of the second put the Jays ahead for good. Angel Gomez and Juan Kelly both had two-hit, one-walk contests while Dave Pepe did the opposite with one hit and two walks. Lane Thomas and Yeltsin Gudino were both 1-for-4. Edwin Fuentes singled and stole a base. Matt Morgan was 0-for-4.
Evan Smith (1-0) worked around five hits and three walks to limit the Tigers to a run over five innings. He struck out five and induced seven outs on the ground. Jacob Brentz pitched the remaining four innings for the save. He gave up just a hit, three walks and hit a batter while also whiffing five batters.
DSL Tigers 5 DSL Blue Jays 0
San Pedro de Macoris, DR - Denis Diaz (2-2) served up a long ball among his two runs allowed over five innings. He gave up only two hits and walked a batter while whiffing five and getting five grounders. Guillermo De La Cruz allowed a hit and a walk along with 3 K's over his two innings of relief. Kelyn Jose surrendered the other two runs in two-thirds of an inning on a hit and two walks. He did strike out a pair. Thony Vinicio allowed one of two Jose runners to score before getting the final out of the inning.
Jesus Severino and Leudy Garcia both had a base rap and a base on balls. Enmanuel Moreta had a hit of the base and of the being hit variety. Javier Hernandez and Bryan Lizardo had the other hits. Rodrigo Orozco walked and stole his 10th base.
