One of the better ideas Canada's new independent pro league had was to sign players to contracts before assigning them to teams. The playing field must be level when your entire regular season is against just three other teams in your division. Yesterday, the CBL announced its rosters, and all teams are still looking for free agent talent.

I'm a skeptic. I don't think the CBL will play noticeably better ball than the Intercounty League, though we'll miss Rich Butler and Gamin Teague at the Pits this year. The Sunday night TV games (shown on The Score, a poor substitute for Jon and Joe and the ESPN featured game) could help create interest. I'm not rooting for the league to fail; quite the contrary -- I'm happy for the sprinkling of Canadians who get a chance to play, and there's never too much baseball. The first year will be understandably rocky, and the CBL will require more teams to survive, but the talent pool is shallow already, and unless all the local marketing efforts are superb, the investors will need deep pockets.

Before anyone jokes about the Royales outdrawing the local NL club, it ain't gonna happen. The barnstorming Montreal CBL team, like Los Expos, is playing its "home" games all over the place -- Sherbrooke, and a bunch of TBAs. I don't understand why they're not based at Parc Jarry.

The Trois-Rivieres Saints manager is Dan Norman! Man, that name brings back memories. I mean, it's a common enough name that it might not be the same guy, but if it is, Norman was one of the posse of players (along with Pat Zachry, Doug Flynn and "centerpiece" Steve Henderson) the Reds gave up for Tom Seaver in 1977.

The mention of no-name players involved in transactions for great players allows me the opportunity to ask one of my favourite trivia questions:

Who was the only player ever traded for Pete Rose?

I'll supply the answer when I check back in tomorrow.

Why, it's the best catcher in Blue Jays history...Tom Lawless.

By the way, the league opener on May 21 will be live on The Score, and so will a game every Sunday during the summer. Awesome job by The Score.

Coach, you have probably taken teams there, but do they even have a baseball diamond at Jarry Park anymore? I've been up there for the tennis, but never noticed any baseball facility.

Hmmmm. I wonder if they have open tryouts like they do in the U.S. independent leagues. Perhaps this is my ticket north! After all, any team could use my variety of skills: switch-hitting, strong-but-erratic arm, some range at SS/3B, American expatriate, a fair amount of knowledge of the English language ... oh, forget it.

Craig, it's been a long time since I was in that neighbourhood, so you're probably right. But a homeless team is embarrassing, and two in one city is just weird.

Gitz, you should go to Kelowna, B.C. with your spikes. The Okanagan valley is one of Canada's most beautiful places, and you could become the Jim Morris of Batter's Box. Even better -- "The Rookie" didn't get a visa.

Give that fan a contract! Well done, Spicol.

a fair amount of knowledge of the English language ...

I don't think Boomer Wells got the memo that this was a required skill.
