Four teams within 1.5 games of the lead, ten teams bunched within seven games. Percentage points (or a Yahoo tiebreaker; I didn't do the math) separate the Walrus from the Gorillas for the league lead, after my Sunday comeback from a 7-4 deficit to a 6-5 win over Snellville. Thanks to Carlos Delgado, Matt Morris and my bullpen; Wagner and Baez pulled out the SV category. I've already traded a couple, but I still find myself with three closers, so I'd listen to offers for Baez or Cliff Politte.

A few teams made big gains -- Mike H.'s Springfield Isotopes closed three games on the leaders with an 8-3 win, Jonny's K-Town Mashers moved up three positions in the standings with a 9-3 romp, and Jason's Garces_not_on_roids squad went from 18th place (15 games out) to 14th (11 games out) with a 9-2 win. A couple of teams went the other way, most notably Red Mosquitos -- I think Spicol was distracted by managing the all-time Jays -- who lost three games to the leaders and fell from 7th to 12th overall.

Here's where we stand after five (of 22) weeks:

 # Team Name W-L-T W % GB

I don't know what to expect from Mike M.'s Fish Candy this week. He has three pitchers on the DL to my one, but he still got 76 IP and 5 wins from that staff last week. The hitting categories should be close, but if Delgado stays in his zone, he could make the difference.

Well, down at the other end of the standings there was wild excitement in Moscow as the hometown Rats hung on to win their first game of the season, a 7-5 squeaker over Glyndwr. Now that I'm over the terror of watching the lead gradually shrink from 10-1 to 10-2 to 8-4 to the final 7-5, I'm ready to start a win streak. The awards: MVH (Most valuable hitter) goes to Carl Everett, whose line of 7 R, 11 RBI 346/433/885 caused me great pain as he compiled it against the Jays but still propelled me to victory. LVH (Least Valuable Hitter) goes to the hitherto excellent Mark Ellis (2 R, 2 RBI, 083/115/083.) My MVP (Most Valuable Pitcher) is Joe Borowski, whose win and two saves were a pleasant change from the Vladimir Nunez days. And the LVP this week goes to Tomo Ohka, who got shelled by the Cardinals. Look out Garces, the Rats are comin' to town.

It was a weird week for the Fish Candies. My normally awesome hitters hit a weak 268/351/421, losing all three of those categories. My usually combustable pitching staff won 5 games and won every category except saves. Since I don't have a healthy closer, I'm not competing in that category.

I drafted 3 pitchers with my first 10 picks in the draft. All 3 are currently on the DL. Byrd was waived because he's probably out for the year. Nen is out until who knows when. Hopefully Kim will come back soon. I drafted 8 pitchers with my first 21 picks. 5 of those 8 are on the DL. My pitching wasn't supposed to be this bad. Let's not even mention Jeter.

My best pitcher is now Kenny Rogers, whom I drafted in the 12th.

I'm honestly shocked I'm not in last.

P.S. To the other owners. I'm not interested in creating the Small Sample Size All-Stars, so please don't bother offering me scrubs because they had 3 good games in a row. Not interested.

After a good month, Baird Brain had a BAD week.... and it's only getting worse. The Pirates aren't playing Pokey Reese anymore (can you blame them?), and so instead of those cheap steals I was hoping for from my MI position I get the occational PH AB. Travis Lee is starting to hit like Travis Lee again, Matsui's hitting like a Japanese slugger (ha ha), and aside from one 7RBI game, Berkman is too.

It's a bad sign when I'm looking forward to the return of Burnitz.

Time to hand out the team awards:

April MVP Award (tie)
Jose Cruz Jr. 23 R, 16 RBI, 3 SB, .308/.439/.593
Todd Helton 28 R, 27 RBI, .337/.464./.633

April Cy Young Award
Jason Schmidt 35.2 IP, 3 W, 1.77 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 3.08 K/BB

April ROY Award
Ricardo Rodriguez 38.0 IP, 2 W, 3.32 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 1.67 K/BB

April LVP Award
Lance Berkman 13 R, 4 RBI, .208/.337/.319

April Jose Lima Award
Brett Tomko 34.1 IP, 2 W, 4.46 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 1.83 K/BB

The Bashers managed to win their series with the tough Nation Builders thanks to a return from the dead of one Junior Spivey, whose 13 hit week nearly made up for a month's worth of being a sucking chest wound for the offence.

The pitching wasn't as great although the no-name closer brigade managed to pull out a narrow saves victory. Other than Myers, Day, and maybe Piniero, the rest of the staff managed to just pad my innings...that was the only other pitching category I won.

Hoping for better things from Schilling this week...I've only gotten one start worthy of a first round pick this season so far...Pedro Martinez, Alfonso Soriano, many other batters...ah what might have been.

I managed 40 runs, 37 RBI, 5 steals, and a line of .266/.335/.472. All respectable numbers. For that effort, I was swept.

Thank you, Crede, Ledee, Alex Sanchez and Tino, who combined to bat .108/.114/.209 in 68 plate appearances.

MV Hitter so far: Albert Pujols (1st round), batted .381/.455/.679, 26 runs, 20 rbi.

LV Hitter: Among original picks, Joe Crede (11th), batted .235/.259/.353, 9 runs, 14 rbi.

MV Pitcher: Mark Redman (19th), 39.2 IP, 3 wins, 2.72 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 3.17 K/BB.

LV Pitcher: Alan #$%&*#! Embree (12th???), 5.0 IP, 1 win, 0 saves, 14.40 ERA, 2.60 WHIP, 1.33 K/BB

Oh yeah...I'm not supposed to ever beat anyone in stolen bases, much less when they steal 5 for the week. But for some reason I got 3 out of Sheffield and 5 out of Vazquez. It was a strange week.

For the month of April:

MV Hitter: Gary Sheffield (2nd round), .340/.432/.638, 26 runs, 19 rbi, 5 sb

Just hit baby. And if you want to keep stealing 5 bags a month that's fine by me.

LV Hitter: Junior Spivey (5th round), .250/.345/.342, 11 runs, 7 rbi, 1 sb

A late surge makes him look better than he actually was most of the month.

MV Pitcher: Shawn Chacon (undrafted), 27.2 IP, 3 wins, 0.98 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 1.89 K/BB.

Only including the starts he actually made for the Bashers...he helped stabilize a staff where Schilling was struggling.

LV Pitcher: Jose "Escobar's Brother" Jimenez (10th round), 13.1 IP, 0 wins, 6 saves, 8.78 ERA, 2.77 WHIP, 1.29 K/BB

The saves are good but he's not supposed to be that bad.

Well, the Walrus put a hurt on the Gashouse this week. Morris outpitched Oswalt on Sunday, denying me three out of four close pitching categories. We split the offensive stats; Coach took the counting stats while I took the rates. Soriano went 0-for-Oakland and now has two weeks (2 & 5) in which he has hit ~.150/.250/.300 averaging 1R and 1RBI as opposed to three weeks (1,3,&4) when he hit ~.430/.500/.750 and averaged 9R and 8RBI. Not surprisingly, his good weeks were the ones which included series with either Toronto or Texas.

Dreifort put up his best week of the year, as he allowed only 3R in 13IP, with 14K and only 3BB. He was my only starter to get a win, although everyone (except for Oliver Perez) had quality starts. Maybe now that Perez is in AAA I'll be less tempted to start him.

This week gets no easier as the Gorillas will have to resist regime change when the Nation Builders come to town. This may be the only week Scott can enjoy Teixeira's part-time stuggles- he's my starting third baseman.

By no coincidence, my other Yahoo fantasy team is named the Regime Changers.

And in ESPN, I have "Osaka Seafood Concern," "A Globo-Chem Company," and "Treatment Bound." Extra bonus points if you can guess the references.

Impressive.

#1: The Simpsons (visiting Japan)

#2: Mr. Show with Bob And David (Globo-Chem: "We own everything, so you don't have to")

#3: "Treatment Bound" is a song by The Replacements.
