Spot the contradiction in the following excerpt from a CP report:

The Toronto Blue Jays optioned right-hander Josh Towers to triple-A Syracuse on Sunday to make room for an additional bat as they head into interleague play.

Catcher Ken Huckaby was recalled later Sunday and will join the team Monday.

I guess Doc gets his personal catcher back.

In other news: Doug Creek was moved to the 60-day DL, and likely needs elbow surgery.

Anyone else think JP will be showcasing a no offence/overrated defence catcher for Tony LaRussa?

I thought this might happen, and said so a week ago. As to the "contradiction" -- Huckaby indirectly provides Tosca with an additional bat, although it's not his. Tom Wilson will be available to pinch-hit and facilitate double-switches in games Huck starts. I guess the theory is, if you're scoring 10 runs a game with hitting catchers and a DH, you should be able to scrape out four or five with Huck and the pitcher in the bottom two spots in the order. This is strictly a temporary move, and it makes sense, especially if Wilson's banged up and would benefit from a few days off behind the plate.

Huckaby's line in Syracuse: 226/279/242 in 69 PA.

He even played 3 games at 1B. I cannot imagine a more terrible first baseman.

Another possibility would be to keep starting Myers and Wilson, but use the other as a pinch-hitter for a pitcher, with Huck as the reserve catcher in case of emergency.

I really don't like the idea of starting Huck right now - the Jays are winning because there are no holes in their offense, and Huck is a great big black hole.

Well at least they get another 40-man spot by DLing Creek...even if it is used on Huckaby in the short term. So far the Tam and Creek signings aren't looking too fruitful...let's hope there's payroll room to do a little better next off-season. If there is a trade available for a reliever I'd look into making something happen sooner than later...another quality arm would make a big difference for this bullpen. It doesn't even have to be a lefthander. Of course the challenge is trading for someone without giving up too much.

We got Aquilino for nothing. I'm sure there are a dozen Aquilinos kicking around the minors who can be had.

By getting Aquilino, we left unprotected Ford and lost Lyon on waivers. They are younger and eventually could be good. It is a take and give game. And as said before we end up with a poor bullpen.
Bruce Chen is available and Mat Williams, enticing?

The Jays already have a old 3B who kills lefties in Mike Bordick. Williams would not fit at all.

Lopez is the guts of this bullpen and if it came down to trade, i'd take Lopez and whatever years he's here for over Brandon Lyon, and in saying that, I offer the best of luck to Brandon in the future.
