A guy with a 29.25 ERA against the Jays faces an emergency AAA callup. Two explosive lineups are licking their chops, and both bullpens could see plenty of action.

Josh Towers gets another chance in a big-league rotation; he must be grateful, after a brief and disappointing bullpen callup at the end of May. In 2001, the soft-tossing righty won six of his first seven decisions and AL rookie of the month honours in June. I don't know what happened in 2002, but he's been respectable for Syracuse this year (3.32 ERA in 132.2 IP, 20 BB. 76 K) and threw a complete game shutout in his latest, with J.P. Ricciardi in attendance.

The biggest step for a pitcher is psychological. If Josh sticks to the same game plan, doesn't try to throw everything too hard and isn't afraid to throw strikes, he'll have a chance to keep his team in the game. It won't require a a shutout; so far, the Jays have owned Colby Lewis, who didn't survive the third inning in back-to-back early May starts. Bobby Kielty gets another day off, so both Sparky and Cat are starting; Wilson's in for Myers.

Lewis was sent to the minors after his early season struggles. When he came back a few weeks ago he had a few good starts until he ran into the Yankees earlier this week. The Rangers will be looking for him to get back on track today.

The game today should be an interesting contrast. Lewis throws hard and will be facing a good fastball hitting team. Towers will be nibbling against a team with a lot of young players. Palmeiro and A-Rod could be trouble for Josh.

Whether the rule makes sense or not, whether the umps called it right or not, I still think the coaching staff blew it by either not finding out if Bordick had to tag up or by not having him tag up if they weren't sure. There was lots of time.

P.S. Harden is scheduled to be pitching on WGN in a few minutes.

When they were showing a shot of Bordick talking to Butterfield at third base, it clearly showed the third base umpire looking at Bordick and pointing right to third base. If the runner is supposed to tag up, why would he do this?

My understanding is that umpires are supposed to act as if runners have touched all the bases and didn't leave early until formally asked on the point by an appeal play. i.e. telling Bordick he was entitled to 3rd-base doesn't imply he didn't leave 1st base early (and in this case the appeal wouldn't even be the 3rd-base umpire's call).

Harden looked impressive in the 1st: a lot of high fastballs blown by hitters reminded me of a young Clemens. I was surprised the WGN gun didn't show higher than 94mph and was usually 89-91; it looked faster.

Just announced...Kevin Cash has been called up and Scott Service released. JP must have liked what he saw in Syracuse this week.

I hope Cash isn't left to rot on the bench. He should be given as many at-bats as possible to evaluate his future with the ballclub.

Service wasn't horrible but he's a waste of time. Hopefully, JP and Tosca also realize that batting Tom Wilson vs. RHP is a waste of time too and Cash gets some AB.

This move makes for an empty spot on the 40-man.

I wonder if Quiroz, who hit his 18th homer tonight, gets a chance in Syractuse this year. If he can hit AAA pitching, and Cash breaks out in the show, Toronto would have the flexibility to deal one or the other over the winter. Probably Huck will just take over f/t for Cash.

It's too bad Werth isn't with the Jays now, or they'd have 6 current or former catchers on the roster.

Considering that Syracuse has no back-up catcher right now, it would make sense. He certainly deserves it. It could possibly be Paul Chiaffredo as well. He's been up before and is hitting well enough. But I'm not sure who would get the shove up to New Haven to replace either guy...no one in Dunedin or C-V-W is playing well enough. Whittaker is still a prospect, but has been displaying Otis Nixon-like power this season.

Would New Haven's upcoming playoff run factor at all into the decision regarding Quiroz?

Geoff, it will certainly be given consideration, as "learning how to win" is part of the organizational philosophy, but I'm sure the Jays always do what they believe is best for each player's development. Syracuse could still make a late run to reach the IL playoffs, and GQ would certainly benefit from working around Ken Huckaby, so I hope they promote him.

¿Dónde está Quiroz?
