With his agent in town to negotiate a contract extension, Kelvim Escobar has an incentive to continue pitching well. His maddening inconsistency seems a thing of the past, as he's 4-0 with a 1.68 ERA in his last six starts, allowing more than two runs just once in that stretch. Since June 3, apart from a disastrous outing on three days' rest against the Yankees and the Jeff Conine beanball incident, when he lost concentration (and the game) in one bad inning, Kelvim's been superb. If you ignore those two blips, his ERA is 2.14 in his last 12 starts.

The Mariners couldn't solve Escobar last Thursday, when he scattered eight hits and a couple of walks over seven innings, striking out seven. He can expect some run support against Ryan Franklin, who was knocked out in the fourth inning last Wednesday after blowing a 5-0 lead. In his career against Toronto (that start and five relief appearances, totalling 14 IP) Franklin boasts a 13.50 ERA and has held the Jays to a .403 average. Josh Phelps and Bobby Kielty are both in the lineup; Catalanotto usually plays against righties, but at least for tonight, he's on the bench with Woodward, Wilson, Berg and Cash.

We apologize on behalf of the Advance Scout, a victim of technical difficulties. This is the most favourable pitching matchup of the series for Toronto; it's Meche vs. Towers tomorrow and Thursday is finesse lefty night, with Moyer and Hendrickson. Some of us are already looking forward to Doc's revenge against the A's on Friday and the scheduled Canadian debut of Rich Harden.

J.P. joined Jerry Howarth in the radio booth for the top of the fourth. He has known Pat Gillick a long time; they worked together on a gold-medal winning Pan-Am Games team.

Without giving anything away, Ricciardi sounded optimistic about signing Escobar, saying both sides want him to stay in Toronto, and "We're not going to go anywhere unless we get pitching." He reminded listeners that the Jays still have Roy Halladay for two more years via arbitration, but says they will work on an extension.

Cliff Politte is in St. Louis, where his wife is about to give birth, but J.P. says "we found out this year" that he's a setup man, not a closer. The GM sounds delighted with Aquilino Lopez.

It's 1-1 in the middle of the fourth; the Jays have missed a few opportunities.

About Josh Phelps, Ricciardi says "you have to show a lot of patience with young players." They are trying to get him some innings at first, but J.P. admitted his "best position might be DH," just as Phelps ripped a double.

"When you trade someone, you want to see them do well," J.P. says about moving Shannon Stewart for Bobby Kielty. That way, the team you traded with is more likely to deal in the future. Asked about the team's recent offensive woes, Ricciardi was philosophical. "You hit as a group, and sometimes you don't hit as a group."

"We're not going to have a lot of money to work with," he explains, but what they do spend will be on pitching. He didn't rule out a closer, but said "we definitely need two more starters."

Tom Cheek suggested he check with Pat Gillick, who has "about five closers," and while J.P. agreed about the talent, he quickly mentioned the Mariners' $95 million payroll and joked that they could afford to let Lopez go.

Ah, Kelvim. He's managed to keep my team in the BBFL playoff chase for now. Which of course leaves me with the same question that JP is facing this off-season: do I hold on to him? Of course, I have the option of rehauling my staff, while JP is much more limited in who he can bring in.

And as soon as I start following the game and posting, Kelvim gives up three runs. Yesh. I should start knocking on wood when I write from now on.

Oops. The Jays mishandled a double-play ball, and with the "extra" out, Edgar the Great mashed a 3-run homer. 4-1 Seattle in the fifth, and it's not entirely Kelvim's fault.

Good thing you caught the JP comments, Coach, now we don't have to waste our interview asking those things.

Interesting take on Stewart's run with the Twins: his hitting doesn't mean anything, really, since we've seen enough of Shannon to know what kind of player he is. But if it makes Terry Ryan more likely to make deals like that with the Jays in the future, then bombs away!

At the very least, Bordick should have been able to knock it down and get a force at second.

Had that been Woodward, we would have heard all about his defensive shortcomings. But somehow Bordick gets a pass...

What about Hinske? Can he survive at third base? I know the Jays cannot have all the skills with their payroll so defense is left out. But Hinske needs to have a .350 OBP and a .450 SLG to make up for his defense.

I remember Scott Carson saying in the spring that Hinske had an attitude. Maybe he let the rookie of the year go to his head. I know he has been injured but an off-season of hard work will hopefully see an improved Hinske next year.

Given the way Hinske carries himself on-field, I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear he has an attitude. The man can rake, when healthy, but he's clearly a mook.

Bring back BJ!

Where is he now? Last night I got to watch Pat Borders continue his quest for another World Series MVP. The best part was nobody sitting around me knew Pat Borders was a world series MVP. Luckily the trivia question, last night in Salt Lake City, was "Who in this game was the 92 world series mvp." It confirmed what I was telling everyone.

Bring back Kelly Gruber! Mullet and all, baby!

If he does get a "pass", it's because he's a good defensive shortstop. Woodward isn't. I fail to see your point.

Stop the presses! Vermilyea gave up 3 runs yesterday and took the loss in Dunedin.
