Word is that Cory Lidle has cleared waivers, and could still be moved as the final deadline nears. In a way, he's auditioning tonight against his former -- and possibly future -- team. What about trading him for shortstop Michael Rouse (303/393/408 for AA Midland)? There would be a certain symmetry to that deal, but I'd prefer a pitcher like Shane Komine. Old pals Beane and Ricciardi might even swap tonight's starters, depending on which minor-leaguers are thrown in.

Tanyon Sturtze (0-2, 6.52 with 14 BB and 15 K since the break) is still a Blue Jay, for reasons I cannot fathom. Dan Reichert was optioned to make room for Lidle, the latest Jay to downplay an injury to the detriment of his team. After pitching poorly for several weeks with a strained groin, Cory's 4-inning AAA rehab stint was encouraging. If he's pain-free and has good command this evening, expect a bidding war for his services, with the Cardinals and Astros other possible suitors.

Should the Jays rebound from being outscored 28-7 during Alumni Weekend to beat the A's tonight, they will split the 14-game test against Seattle and Oakland. It's about salvaging some pride for the home team, but there's a huge incentive for the visitors -- the Mariners have already lost 8-1 to the Red Sox, so the A's can move into a tie for the division lead.

I have no quarrel with Carlos Tosca's lineup; Crash, O-Dawg and F-Cat are on the bench against the lefty starter. Mike Bordick starts at second base, and because he's 5-for-9 with a pair of homers off Ted Lilly, is in the 2-hole. Although Dave Berg hits southpaws well, Eric Hinske is in his customary spot at the hot corner. Tom Wilson (a double and a HR in 4 previous AB) would have been an acceptable choice as DH, but in another decision that will be popular with the ZLC, Josh Phelps gets the call.

Interesting qoute from E. Chavez from Today's SF Chronicle:

Chavez said the difference is that the A's offense is more proactive these days. "The first half, everyone was stepping in the box 0-2," he said. "The taking-pitches thing wasn't working. It took away from our aggressiveness and we stunk for two months. We've got to swing the bats."

I wonder what Beane's comment to this would be....

Whoa. Lilly has some pretty great movement on his fastball tonight. Let's hope he can't harness it.

For chrissakes, don't stand there staring at pitches and go 0-2. Take pitches out of the strike zone, not in the strike zone.

Including tonight, the Jays have 32 games left.

1) What are the odds that Vernon Wells will end up with 200 or more hits? He needs 29.
2) What are the odds that Roy Halladay will end up with 200 strikeouts? He needs 45.

What are the odds that Delgado and Wells can finish 1-2 in RBIs. The last time two teammates in the AL did that was Armas & Rice for the '84 Red Sox.

Yeah, and pounce on mistakes. Vernon Wells isn't impatient, or a free swinger, as much as he prepares himself for cookies. Last year, he had the same approach, but guessed more and missed a few; I had a theory that he was taking his eye off the ball. This year, his head is down and he's making better contact. I think he'll get his 200 hits. The RBI thing could also happen; V-Dub plays every day and the September schedule is soft.

It's 50-50 whether Doc will strike out 45. He will or he won't.

With Garret Anderson plugging along at his usual pace, ARod on fire behind Vernon and the Jays offense sputtering relative to earlier this year, I'd unscientifically place the odds that Carlos and Vernon finish 1-2 in RBI at 5:1.
_Spicol - Monday, August 25 2003 @ 08:03 PM EDT (#93674) #
Ok, the "facts" are really flying now.

Cerutti just explained how even though Oakland has a poor average and hasn't scored many runs, they've been successful because they have a "high on-base percentage".

I'm sure you're a nice person, John, but you're a dolt. First, if you didn't score runs, your offense hasn't been successful. Stressing OBP as your main offensive tool is one method to score runs. It's not a result. Second, the A's are 11th in OBP. Is it too much to ask that you check your facts?

5-1 sounds about right for Delgado/Wells coming 1-2 in RBI. The Jays do have an easy schedule coming up, though, so I could see Wells catching Anderson. I think ARod has a really good chance of coming in second.

Speaking of the '84 Red Sox, I think they're a pretty good comp for the current Jays team. They had a terrific offense, terrible pitching and didn't steal bases. While the Red Sox weren't a young team, their oldest regular was Buckner at 34. They had a better bullpen, though, and IIRC they hit into a ton of double plays. How are the Jays this year in that category?

Next, while discussing whether or not Alfonso Soriano could end up as the first 50-50 man, Cerutti mentioned how Soriano "doesn't strike out much". (He already has 105 this year, and struck out 157 times last season)

A play-not-made by Eric Hinske made Lidle work extra hard, and Woodward bobbled one, so this isn't all Cory's fault.

Wells smashed an RBI double off the wall to cash Sparky and make it 4-3 in the bottom of the third. Delgado walked, but Kielty grounded into a double play on the first pitch.

Bobby Kielty just came up lame. A BBFL related lump appears in my throat. Somewhere, Scott Lucas is laughing.

Speaking of BBFL, I'm surprised how well my team has played after the white flag. I figured I'd finish in last or next-to-last and get the 1st or 2nd pick. Now I can't finish any lower than 3rd last, and could still finish 8th overall. What a crazy league.

If I pick better pitchers next year, I think I'll have a powerhouse.

Coach - Monday, August 25 2003 @ 08:21 PM EDT (#93681) #
Sounds like a hamstring for Kielty. I'm listening on the radio; Jerry said Catalanotto was doing calisthenics in left field. Sending Cat out there is risking another injury if his back isn't properly warmed up. Why not Berg in RF?
_Spicol - Monday, August 25 2003 @ 08:25 PM EDT (#93682) #
Further on the BBFL, I'm torn on strategy. I'm so close to making the first tier playoffs but I don't have any solid keepers. The best thing for me to do, if I don't finish in the top-6, is to tank so I can get a higher draft pick. Sigh.

It's funny.. I could never bring myself to play anything that wasn't my best possible lineup. At the same time, I'm hoping they stink up the place. For an economist, that's not at all rational, but I can't seem to do anything but that. I've even been looking for FAs twice a week to help the team.

Can't blame an infielder for that pitch to Tejada; 5-3 A's. Let the second-guessing begin that Lidle should have been done after 80 pitches through four.
_Spicol - Monday, August 25 2003 @ 08:30 PM EDT (#93685) #
I wouldn't tank, simply because it would wreck the league. But it is tempting.

You're right.. it would. Maybe that's one thing that should be in the constitution: any owner found to be throwing games could lose their first draft pick.

Jays quotes:

"I don't know why we didn't knock someone on their butt, I thought about it... Why I didn't I don't know. We let them get extended over the plate and they just kept driving balls."
--Josh Towers, Blue Jays pitcher, on the A's 17-run rout of the Blue Jays on Sunday (AP)

"Other than the grand slam and a few hits, I think I made good pitches."
--Kelvim Escobar, Blue Jays pitcher, on his start against the A's (AP)

I haven't been intentionally tanking, but I haven't kept up on my roster like I should be. The way I've played this year, even if I had kept up since the deadline passed, it wouldn't make much difference...

My rookied really did tank- Overbay, Choi and Phillips all demoted, while Woodward lost his job and sucked while he had it.

On the plus side, my keepers look decent- I-Rod, Green, Tim Hudson, with Benitez, Loiza, and Drew on the bubble.

That's why Phelps should be in there every day! A big home run off Rincon makes it 7-6 in the eighth.

I don't think I'll ever forget the homer he hit at the game I was at with you, Craig, Robert, and rodent. I mean, it looked like only got half of the ball and it still went out.

If Phelps can eventually put it all together, I think he can hit 50+ homers. Of course, there's no guarantee he won't turn into the next Joe Charboneau. The extra 60 IQ points he has on Joe should help, tho.

Sparky used his other patented weapon -- taking one for the team -- but to no avail. This game could have gone either way; it was a lot better than the last two.
_Jurgen - Tuesday, August 26 2003 @ 12:06 AM EDT (#93693) #
RBIs aside, Vernon's having an even better second half: .347/.397/.556 This guy's awesome--and remember he's younger than Phelps.

I'd put the odds of Carlos and Vernon going 1-2 in the MVP at closer to 500-1. At this rate, I don't think Carlos will win the team MVP, let alone the league award.

As it stands, Rodriguez, Boone, Suzuki, Giambi, Garciaparra will all get more votes at the end of the year than Carlos. (I wonder if this might finally be the year where A-Rod squeaks ahead due to vote splitting from the other worthy candidates from contenders?)
_Jurgen - Tuesday, August 26 2003 @ 12:09 AM EDT (#93694) #
...any owner found to be throwing games could lose their first draft pick.

Or be forced to draft Neifi Perez as one of their five keepers.

Pipe dream. The BBWAA has proven, if nothing else, that AL players only get so honoured if they are on a good team. And a Texas Ranger is selected only if can steal an award from A-Rod.

I think the Suzuki PR train is gathering steam and by mid-September the momentum will be too great for the writers to change course.
