The Toronto Sun's website has a CP article by Shi Davidi on sabermetric approaches to building teams (it's on Canoe, so get it soon before it disappears) inspired by the recent Oakland-Toronto series.

The article contains a vintage J.P. Ricciardi quote, this one about a young Mike Bordick (who Ricciardi signed for the A's back in 774 B.C.)

I'm thinking that the smarts to not go around hitting bulls in the ass with a shovel should favour Bordick--not count against him.

Depends where he lives. Very few bulls populate the Greater Toronto Area.

Not sure if anyone saw it, but apparently Quiroz has/had a collapsed lung.

Both Beane and Ricciardi fell under Alderson's influence.

"Sandy had a real open mind," Beane said. "He looked at things, not just from a baseball standpoint but from an academic standpoint. I think the transition for both of us started at the same time."

That's what the "knockers" conveniently forget. It was a transition. Billy and J.P. were players, coaches, scouts -- as traditional as you can get -- but they weren't afraid to examine new ideas, or to integrate the best ones into their philosophies. They are smart and curious, unlike the closed-minded individuals who proudly say "I haven't read Moneyball, but I disagree with every word."

From the Official Site:

"Right now, as it stands, we're planning on bringing back Bowles and Reichert. Other than that, nobody's really been discussed," said Toronto manager Carlos Tosca. "We already let Bowles and Reichert know that they'd be coming back in September."

Craig, I think you're wrong about the date of Bordick's signing. Check your facts, dude. This kind of lazy, irresponsible reporting may be tolerated in The Star, ESPN.com, or The Canadian Jewish News, but it will not fly here in Da Box. Shame on you.

Gitz, lay off of Craig's reporting. It's easy to miss the date by a year or two when Bordick is clearly one of those guys paving the way for the current Latin American Regressive Age Scandal.

When we discovered last year that when he signed in 774 B.C. the young Bordick was actually 52 instead of 18 as originally reported, it confused many people. But for the record, that means he is now 2,811 instead of 2,777.

And, to his credit, he doesn't look a day over 1,100.

Rickey remembers playing against someone like Bordick in a big series between Athens and Rome. Shortstop with good hands, right?
