In his Notes at MLB.com, Spencer Fordin talks about Carlos Tosca's suspension (say it, don't spray it) and Mike Maroth's losses (thank goodness Brian Kingman's 15 minutes is up) but also lists the Howard Webster Award winners:

Syracuse - Simon Pond
New Haven - Alexis Rios
Dunedin - Jesse Harper
Charleston - Rodney Medina
Auburn - Vito Chiaravalloti
Pulaski - Robinzon Diaz
Pringamosa - Edward Rodriguez

Congratulations to all, especially B.C.'s own Simon Pond, a minor league free agent signing who has thrived in the Jays system. Elsewhere in the playoffs, Russ Adams (4-for-6, two doubles, a triple, three runs), Anthony Sanders (three doubles) and Dominic Rich (two doubles, two walks) supported David Bush's terrific start (a 3-hitter, 2 BB, 2 HBP in 7 IP) for the Ravens. Auburn lost 3-2 to Williamsport, as Shaun Marcum surrendered the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. It rained -- a lot -- in Florida.

There's lots of other baseball news, but no time to share it with you; it's a work day for me and there's a persistent little dog demanding to be walked. Talk about whatever's on your mind.

The season's biggest losers according to Jim Caple might *not* include Mike Maroth.

The starting lineup looks like this:
SP Jeff Weaver, Yankees
C Brad Ausmus, Astros
1B Daryle Ward, Dodgers
2B Edgardo Alfonzo, Giants
3B Jeff Cirillo, Mariners
SS Ramon Santiago, Tigers
OF Pat Burrell, Phillies
OF Bobby Higginson, Tigers
OF Jermaine Dye, A's
DH Jeremy Giambi, Red Sox
CL Mike Williams/Jose Mesa, Phillies

Honestly, how many people have these guys on their BBFL teams? ;-)

Hey, the BBFL is pretty deep. I drafted Jeff Weaver (wanted Johan Santana that round; when I got scooped, foolishly went to the next SP-RP on my list) and stubbornly held on to him. First I thought he'd settle down, then I hoped the Yankees would trade him -- at one point I even turned down a couple of lowball offers from other owners. I benched him a lot, but didn't cut him until his most recent demotion. Call it a masochistic, five-month-long brain cramp. I don't even like the guy!

I'd like to say, for the record, that I was dead on about Alfonzo and Giambi.

You are now free to say "Good work, Gitz, but didn't you also pick Burrell to win the NL MVP?"

I had Cirillo for about thirty seconds mid-season. I was desperate for a third baseman. Any third baseman. I dropped him for Mike Bordick pretty quickly.

Incidentally, in what league does Pringamosa play?

Incidentally, in what league does Pringamosa play?

In the Dominican Summer League, where Edward Rodriguez was 8-1 in 11 starts with an ERA of 0.52 in 68.2 IP. He struck out 66, walked 26, hit four batters and uncorked nine wild pitches, but gave up just 50 hits. He was signed as a free agent last summer.

Tim Wakefield has done a 3-hit number on the Yankees through six, and Roger Clemens was knocked out in the fourth. Red Sox lead 7-0, and will be within a game and a half of the division lead if they hold on.

Shawn Green has homered today, but he might belong on the list of biggest disappointments this year. "Loser" is a bit much, but his dropoff has been astounding, even considering that he may be hurt.

And wouldn't it be something if the Yankees not only missed out on the AL East title but also on the playoffs?

For anyone interested, Dunedin manager Mike Basso will be interviewed on the pregame show in about 10-15 minutes.
_Ryan - Saturday, September 06 2003 @ 04:07 PM EDT (#92603) #
Basso didn't say very much. He drew his answers straight from the Baseball Book of Cliches that all managers use. He did compare Jesse Harper to a faster-working Steve Trachsel, and later he talked about how he joined the Jays. Dick Scott brought him aboard and he's very happy where he is.

Basso apparently was the Florida State League's Manager of the Year this season. He credited his coaches and the players for that.

Anybody knows how old is Edward Rodriguez?
Now the Twins are planning to start rehabbing ( not so rusty ) Milton for game 5 against New Haven.
_Ryan - Saturday, September 06 2003 @ 05:46 PM EDT (#92605) #
According to Toronto's media guide, Rodriguez was born on October 4, 1984.

Thanks Ryan!
Nice prospect we have...
Mike Green - Saturday, September 06 2003 @ 08:39 PM EDT (#92607) #
Rios just homered again to give New Haven a 3-2 lead after 5 and 1/2. Echoing Jabonoso's last post, "nice prospect we have".

New Haven lost in extra innings. Sudden death game 5.

My BBFL season is in the hands of David Wells. Yesterday's anticipated Schilling-Schmidt matchup didn't turn out so well. If Boomer, winless in his last seven starts, can turn it around in today's huge game against the Red Sox, I can advance to the final four. A bad outing might eliminate the Walrus. The way the Yankees have played this weekend, I'm not very confident.
Gerry - Sunday, September 07 2003 @ 12:57 PM EDT (#92611) #
New Haven lost. Cam Reimers gave up 14 hits in 5.2 innings. Jordan DeJong struck out 7 batters in 3.1 innings, no hits, two walks.

Dunedin lost the first game of the final.

Auburn are 2 and out. Tom Mastny gave up 6 early runs, 3 earned. Auburn lost 6-3. They were facing Paul Maholm one of the top pitching prospects in the minors.
Gerry - Sunday, September 07 2003 @ 09:34 PM EDT (#92612) #
New Haven won game 5, 2-1. They are off to the final. Baker pitched a strong 7 innings for the win. Anthony Sanders hit another HR.
