Pete Walker got shelled in his final AAA rehab start and gave up three runs and four hits in 4.1 innings in his only AL start since April. Since then, he's allowed one run and three hits over 6.2 relief IP, but he hasn't worked in over a week. At the racetrack, we'd say he might be "short" of peak condition.

Nate Cornejo kept the Jays off balance for nine innings ten days ago, and battled gamely against the Yankees in his latest. I don't expect another shutout, but he is the favourite in this pitching matchup. We'll see if the Toronto hitters have made adjustments.

Bobby Kielty and Greg Myers are sitting this one out against a righty in the latest lineup configuration.

According to Spencer Fordin on the Official Site, the Jays have been very patient with Kevin Cash:

Buck Martinez, Toronto's former manager and an ex-catcher to boot, wanted to break Spring Training with Cash in 2002. Cooler heads prevailed, though, allowing more development time for the youngster.

J.P. talked about the rookie's playing time and hitting woes.

"Maybe in Spring Training we'll get a better idea of where he's at, if he's ready to come up and play every day," Ricciardi said. "Right now, we're just trying to get his feet wet and let him play a little bit. We're not going to pass judgment on him in 80 at-bats. We know, defensively, he's fine. And we know he's better than he's shown offensively so far."

Meanwhile, in Detroit, Pete Walker is getting his fastball in on the fists and out on the black, mixing in a very effective changeup. That was a quick first inning.

HEY COACH:

Speaking of Kevin Cash, the person that signed him according to some books I've read seems to be Tim Wilken. His name seems to pop up in quite a few of these articles mentioned in the batterbox, I think it would be interesting to get his views about how this team was forming prior to JP being named GM and what he thinks about the direction of where are Blue Jays are going from this point forward. I think I read he (Wilken) is now with the Devil Rays!!

Tigers cash a leadoff double on a Kevin Witt sac fly but the Jays answer back with a Hudson solo homerun. Bottom of the 3rd in a 1-1 game.

Tigers cash another on a Higginson leadoff triple and an "infield hit" on which Pete Walker failed to cover first base. 2-1 Tigers going to the third and this isn't a great performance for Pete Walker.

Vernon Wells has 200 hits and is the first member of the 200-30 club. Josh Phelps cashed him in with a single to tie the game.

It's unfortunate that Walker had the brain cramp, but he's pitched well enough to win. A nifty double play by Bordick got him out of the fifth, and his pitch count is pretty low; I'd send him back out there on a short leash.

Cornejo began to unravel in the seventh, then was betrayed by his defence. O-Dog singled, Cash dropped a fine sac bunt, Sparky got his league-leading HBP, and Cat steered a sinker the opposite way for the go-ahead run. Craig Monroe then dropped a fly ball for a three-base, 2-run error, and that was all for Cornejo. Delgado singled up the middle off lefty reliever Walker and suddenly, the Jays lead 6-2, with Jason Kershner, who came on with a 1-2-3 sixth, in line for the win.

A reasonably efficient performance for Pete but that's to be expected against Detroit. Outside of Young, Higginson, and Pena there isn't much there that scares a pitcher.

It's the Jays batters that had more to prove being shut out the last time and not scoring a lot of runs against the Tigers overall this year. They get an extra 2 runs courtesy of the error and they're looking good leading 6-2 in the 8th.

Does Tosca know he has relievers other than Kershner, Lopez and Miller on his roster. C'mon, a six run lead, in a meaningless game, against Detroit?

A subpar pitching performance by Loaiza in a crucial game against the Twins won't help his Cy Young chances:

2.1 IP, 4H, 5BB, 1K, 4 ER

Hopefully Halladay can stomp on the Tigers tomorrow and cement his Cy Young numbers.

I agree...Kershner, Miller, and Lopez to take care of a 6 run lead against Detroit seemed much. It happened to be a bad day for them but still if Chulk or Bowles can't be trusted in that situation then when can they?

6 runs given up against Detroit isn't exactly good news either whether they won or not.
