The coveted autographed T-shirt (many thanks to Mike H. for the donation, and to J.P. Ricciardi and Carlos Tosca for the autographs) is going to Texas, not Toronto. Congratulations to Scott Lucas on his Nation Builders' 10-1 victory over Billie's Bashers in the two-week final. After a fourth place finish in the regular season, Scott drew a tough playoff assignment, edging Mebion Glyndwr in the first round, then knocking out the regular-season champs, Gashouse Gorillas, in the semi-finals. Snellville Jones' club whomped my Toronto Walrus 9-3 in the bronze-medal matchup, while Spicol's Red Mosquitos won the consolation bracket 8-2 over the Eastern Shore Birds. It was a great first season. There will be no trading until after the World Series, and the rules committee will have a few proposals for all owners to vote on before then.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss how you did in other fantasy leagues this year. For example, Roy Halladay and Carlos Delgado led my team in the AL Roto Junkies 5x5 league to a championship. No T-shirt involved, but I'll be getting a nice cheque. Unfortunately, according to our rules, I can only keep one of my cornerstones next year. It's a tough choice, just like J.P.'s decision. Advice is welcome. There might be an opening in that league next year; e-mail me if interested and I'll forward it to the Commish. The BBFL already has a waiting list, but we're hoping to start a second ZLC league for '04.

I won the Variety Meats Yahoo league with a strong second half surge.

I also finished 1st in 2 other leagues and 2nd in another league. My money does a lot better in fantasy baseball than the stock market.

Congratulations, Scott!

Kent, keep Halladay. He leads the pool of starters by a wider margin than Delgado leads the pool of first basemen. And Carlos won't have this season next year.

I'll take advantage of Kent's invitation, and hereby reproduce the batting lineup of my ESPN team, the Pachelbell Cannons:

Mike Lieberthal
Jim Thome
Placido Polanco
Eric Chavez
Nomar Garciaparra
Reggie Sanders
Carlos Lee
Barry Bonds
Juan Pierre
Aubrey Huff
Orlando Cabrera
Edgar Martinez
David Ortiz

I dealt Jose Vidro for Mike Mussina, but too late to help my pitching, which on paper was great (Matt Morris, Wade Miller, Brett Myers, Gil Meche, Johan Santana), but stunk in ERA and WHIP; I finished third, 4 points behind the winner, whose staff included Schilling, Clemens, Loaiza, Gagne and many others. You gotta love 10-team leagues: Mike Cameron, Nick Johnson and Brad Wilkerson all finished the year on waivers.

Congrats Scott, good show! The best team definitely won.

Did we decide when we were going to hold trade talks for next year. I've been very busy lately and may have missed that post. Tanks, Rick.

Congratulations to the Nation Builders. This was a great year in the BBFL, the most evenly balanced league Ive ever played in by a mile.

Congratulations, Scott. My team fared like the Braves of 'yore; I'm hoping they turn it around against the Cubbies this week.

For the record: I scored 97 runs, knocked in 117, and had a team OPS of .952 for the final two-week playoff. Wow, if I do say so myself.

Texas?!?

Dammit, we got to bring the shirt back to Toronto! (No chance you'll only keep the shirt for a year and then pass it on next September, Scott?)

Yeah, great league. The pregame banter and trash-talk is more supportive than my mom.

Have we decided how ZLC '04 would work in relation to BBFL? I like the idea of making ZLC a non-keeper league, but, say, the top six teams (or something) get promoted to BBFL and inherit the bottom six teams of the BBFL whose owners will go down to the ZLC.

Thanks to Coach for putting the league together and thanks to all who participated

The BBFL was by far the most competitive and enjoyable league in which I’ve ever played. Don’t know if I had the best team, but I was fortunate enough to have the hottest team at the right time. And the luckiest; if I’d had just one fewer inning pitched in my matchup against the Gorillas two weeks ago, I would not have won. I also didn’t suffer any serious injuries other than losing Jeff Kent for a month. Maybe my team is the fantasy version of the 2002 Angels.

I’ve posted the final standings and a variety of stats here, including the best and worst weeks for every team, categorical averages and wins-losses-ties by category. I didn’t bother with making it look very pretty right now, so sorry if it doesn’t look so hot in your browser.

I look forward to perplexing my friends with my Toronto Blue Jays memorabilia, and to next year.

Aye...the Basher machine was grinding to a halt even as they managed to edge the Walrus to get into the final. It was clear they were running on fumes and without a single standout performance from any of my hitters.

Congrats to Scott on a sound victory...and now I have some tough decisions to make in the off-season.

Hey Scott, are you sure you want that t-shirt sent from Toronto?
It probably had to go through a SARS scare or two, was hit by a blackout, suffered mad-cow fallout, oh and perhaps a binge indulgence or two during the Stones concert this summer. On the other hand it comes with a Mel Lastman and perhaps an Ernie Eves as well.

My baseball this season? I'm in a Scorsheet league, finished second overall in the regular season. Will find out playoff results next week.

Anyone on this list play Scorsheet and live in the Toronto/Hamilton area? We have an opening coming up in the league I'm in. We do meet in person once or twice per year, the rest of the time communication is by e-mail.

If you are interested drop me a line guelphdad(at)yahoo.com
note: replace the (at) with @ in the email of course.

Oh, wait.

I wasn't quite that bad.

I see now I misread the chart. It was merely the 381st. And my worst week was actually the second best worst week ever.

[Jurgen cleans up debris... only to smash the wall again.]

Second worst week of all time in that all important week 22. Damn you and your voodoo curse, Coach! Damn you to hell!

Amateur.

I had the *worst* week ever, which also took place during week 22. I'd like to note that this happened *after* my white flag trade (Six of my better players for Vernon Wells) so in some sense my plan worked.

This league was a blast. I can't wait until next year!

The furthest north the championship t-shirt got was Connecticut. Having been hermetically sealed in a plastic bag for the summer, I declare it SARS-free. And by some sort of luck, my region of the state missed the blackout too, so the t-shirt should be in mint condition. As for making the t-shirt a traveling trophy... I guess that's Scott's decision, it's his now. Or will be shortly.
Gitz - Monday, September 29 2003 @ 06:10 PM EDT (#89353) #
I think it's obvious why Lucas won: I wasn't in the league to whoop his fanny.

Thanks to Freddy Garcia's underachievement, which killed my main competitor's pitching staff, I just procured my third title in five years in my 12-team, AL-only auction keeper league, and for the first time ever I did it without Pedro. I did have a few pitchers named Mulder, Halladay, and Zito around ...

Next year, assuming I can't squeeze into the "A" league here at Da Box, I'll run the "B" league, if Coach gives his Canadian consent.
_Shrike - Monday, September 29 2003 @ 07:50 PM EDT (#89354) #
I too would like to be a participant in the BB 'A' or 'B' league. I also have to give Coach props for his impressive win in the RJ league he introduced me to this year; I finished an underachieving fourth.
_Shrike - Monday, September 29 2003 @ 07:53 PM EDT (#89355) #
By the way, Gitz, just why did you use the verb 'procured' in your post? I hope you're not hinting at unsavoury methods that you used in your quest for roto championships . . . ;)
_Brad - Monday, September 29 2003 @ 10:46 PM EDT (#89356) #
Congrats from the far Left Coast, Scott, on a great championship run! And thanks to all the other owners for making this an interesting learning experience for me in my first head-to-head league. Can't wait for the Hot Stove and next spring!

I think it's obvious why Lucas won: I wasn't in the league to whoop his fanny.

Gitz: if you want in, you've got to learn to trash-talk the BBFL way. It's more like: "I think it's obvious why Lucas won: if I was in the league he'd whoop my fanny."

And I saw Fat C.C. pitch early in the season ... I dumped his butt immediately

Mebion Glyndwr : Fat blokes always welcome!

Congrats to Scott. You clearly deserved to win since you put up the great stats. Great league. Actually, so great that I would be scared as hell to be relegated if we go to the European Football format. But I guess it would be fitting since the "real" AGF (Aarhus Gymnastik Forening) is forever on the brink of relegation in the Danish football league.

Can't wait to trade my great players for your marginal ones.....

And go A's. Watch out for a three game sweep of Boston, Curse or no curse!
_King Rat - Wednesday, October 01 2003 @ 09:24 PM EDT (#89361) #
A belated congratulations to Scott, and a thank you to every other owner in the league. It's been a blast. And next year...
