Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants, 4 PM ET

This figures to be another great pitchers' duel. Base-stealers have had good success against Jason Schmidt, so look for the Marlins to bunt and steal frequently. Florida manager Jack McKeon has stated he will pitch around Barry Bonds at every opportunity.

Josh Beckett has been lights out the last month, but might become dramatically less effective after 100 pitches. The key for the Giants will be to get the first three hitters on base, so walking Bonds will put great pressure on the defence.

Beckett strikes out fewer righties, but they seem to make solid contact off him. The Giants will take a lot of pitches and test Beckett's stamina.

J.T. Snow is an excellent choice as the #2 hitter, but Rich Aurilia is simply not good enough to bat 3rd in this lineup, especially against a righthander. Jose Cruz, somewhat surprisingly, finds himself hitting 8th - where he'll get an automatic walk with a base open.

Jason Schmidt is lights out against righthanded hitters. The Marlins have only 2 lefthanded batters in the starting lineup. Runs will be scarce for the fish.

Florida doesn't have a great offence, but their hitters are in the right positions. It's a shame that they're got all those rightahnded batters.

Did those Bonds stats come from a Nintendo game? 544AB and 265 walks?!? Wow.

Robert: When you post park factors, are you planning on posting component park factors? I'd love to use them for calculating park-adjust DIPS.

Cheers,

Mike

And our boy Jose jr. ain't bad either 120 bbs ( did they put some kind of tape to make more difficult the swing or what? )

Sometime late tonight the general park factors will go up. The component PFs should be ready tomorrow or Thursday.

1-0 in the eigth. Becket out for pinch hitter and 110+ pitches.

Is it me or is Josh Beckett's curve ball as good, if not better, than Zito's? Add in that 96 MPH heater and ... wow.

Good grief, I hope the Marlins protect this kid; the race for NL Cy Young in the next 10 years is going to be tremendous, as we've discussed on this site in the past.

By the way, my mom -- who knows as much about baseball as I do (go ahead, insert "That's not much of an accomplishment" here) -- is at the game today, so let's root for the Giants to finish off the W. And by "let's" I mean everyone but me. I really don't like SF.

Both pitchers were truly outstanding, and Becket future look uber promising.

That was one of the best playoff games I've ever seen from a pitching standpoint. Jason Schmidt is outstanding! Beckett *could* even be better than the SF ace if he'd only throw his curveball for strikes more often.

And yes, if you consider that the NL currently featues Mark Prior, Roy Oswalt, Josh Beckett and other excellent young pitchers like Brandon Webb, the Cy Young race is on. And it's quite possible that Javier Vazquez could win one too.

Here's hoping that the Prior/Maddux matchup is half as good as this one turned out to be.

It was an excellent game... I had the pleasure of watching it with my Dad, who hasn't really cared much about baseball since 1997 (he's an Indians fan). The Fightin' Jays have got him back interested in the sport but I think this is the first NL game he's watched in years, so I had a lot of questions like "Who is that pitching for the Giants?!?" and "When did Pudge leave the Rangers?!?" Good times.

I'm looking forward to your park factors, Robert. I have no doubt that they'll be quite useful.

Cheers,

Mike
