Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants, 4 PM ET (Game 2)

It looks like the righthander Ponson will start game 2. The Marlins have very few potent lefthanded bats (even on the bench) and so Ponson is a solid choice. Rueter wouldn't be a bad choice, either: he'd be a good bet to shut off the running game, and it's hard for the Marlins to generate runs in other ways.

It didn't have a large impact on the game, but the automatic walk to Bonds with the bases empty and two outs in the 8th was a bit much. By all means pitch him carefully - at least you'd have a shot at getting the out.

Brad Penny walks significantly more lefthanded batters, but otherwise has a minimal left-right split. Bonds will most likely be walked 3 times out of 5 plate appearances and the Giants have three other lefties that draw walks. Prediction: if Penny walks more than 4 guys he's going to lose.

The Giants go with the same lineup. Is Jose Cruz in Felipe's doghouse?

Patient lefhanded hitters can draw walks against Ponson, but the Marlins have only one batter who fits that description (Luis Castillo). The conclusion I draw from the data is that Ponson goes after righthanded batters and is very careful against lefties. Last night off Schmidt, the Fish could do nothing more than hit flyballs to rightfield (only Pudge was able to make good contact on those). Ponson will be more hittable, and we'll see if Florida's righhanded mashers can find the gaps.

Florida goes with the same lineup, and should have more success than they did yesterday. I'd like to see Encarnacion and Conine batting ahead of Cabrera.

One Bonds PA with a runner on first, one game-tying double. I fearlessly predict he finishes today 1-1, with three walks (intentional or semi-intentional).

Robert, I have to disagree with you about hitting Conine and Encarnacion ahead of Cabrera. Cabrera is simply in my view a much better hitter than these two. The sample size for Cabrera's performance against right-handed pitchers is small, and he came on as the season drew to a close (under the heat of the wild card race).

Well, that will grab your attention. A semi-intentional walk to Bonds with a man on first, nobody out and a tie game in the 4th inning. He may not see another pitch this game.

Hasn't Rich Aurilia proven that 2001 was an anomoly? Why is he batting 3rd? Shouldn't he be batting 8th on this team?

And why isn't Bonds batting 3rd? To my mind, if there's any protection to be had for him, it's by ensuring that he's got decent OBP guys ahead of him, rather than a great hitter behind him. Most managers I would think, McKeown notwithstanding, would feel more pressure to pitch to Bonds with first or first and second occupied.

I can't imagine that it matters which of the seven dwarves in this Giants lineup bats behind Bonds.

Gwynn & Berman completely blew the play by play on that hot shot that went through Snow's legs.

The camera crew even gave them a perfect shot -- the ball had so much spin on it, it curved back towards the line. Which is why Snow missed it.

I've seen youngsters come up and hit well, only to regress when the pitchers figure them out. Cabrera hasn't been through the grind like Conine and Encarnacion - in key games I think it's wise to bat raw rookies lower down in the order no matter what their potential (and I still think when speaking of Cabrera, we're talking potential).

I thought that Snow deflected it.
