In a series of articles that will run through the playoffs, I'll pay tribute to the history of postseason baseball. Stay tuned for the Ten Greatest Division Series Games Of All-Time; The Twenty-Five Greatest Championship Series Games of All-Time; and the Fifty Greatest World Series Games of All-Time.
This isn't intended to be a comprehensive narrative about the legendary games in postseason history. Instead, through the help of Retrosheet and various history books, it's an attempt to rank -- and briefly discuss -- the best ballgames in postseason history.
My criteria is simple: It has to be a critical, evenly-matched game with self-contained greatness. For instance, I won't rank historic games -- like Robinson playing in Game 1 in 1947 -- or historic accomplishments -- like Larsen's perfecto or Jackson going deep thrice. It's all about the kind of game that makes baseball more than just statistics and finances.
Hopefully it will inform and spark debate. To get the ball rolling, I'll run a poll where Box denizens can vote on their favourite series of all time. Stay tuned!
