Chicago Cubs at Florida Marlins, 8 PM ET (Game 3)

If there's a game in the playoffs where its okay to get blown out - it's a Game 2 facing Mark Prior. The Fish were a long shot going into the game and after Brad Penny got torched, there wasn't much anyone in the Florida clubhouse could have done.

Mark Redman will need the support of the crowd and the park behind him to succeed tonight - the Cubs hit lefties well (see Division Series entries with Mike Hampton starting for Atlanta for details). The Marlins offence isn't built upon the walk - a good weapon to have against the occasionally wild Wood. They'll have to make the most of their baserunners tonight.

Florida needs to take 2 of 3 over this weekend in their backyard. Even in that scenario, Chicago will be able to pitch Prior and Wood in Games 6 and 7. Chicago favoured to win tonight: 57% to 43%.

Adjusted Runs Produced and Adjusted Base Runs don't agree on the impact of the first three batters in the order. Juan Pierre has scored a lot of runs in proportion to the number of times he's reached base. The opposite can be said of Luis Castillo. Ivan Rodriguez has been the most productive hitter in the lineup, according to both methods.

You may have noticed that Alex Gonzalez has a negative Adjusted Base Runs total. This arises because Base Runs are adjusted for outs saved/consumed in relation to the team. Because Gonzalez has an outs rate of 94% (very high) he has taken away opportunites, and therefore runs, from his teammates. Also notable is the exceptional performance of the substitutes, pinch-hitters and pitchers in the others category.

The Base Runs formula says the Marlins should have scored 33.16 runs - they have fallen a little short of that (32 runs scored). The Cubs' Base Runs projection is almost spot on - a predicted 39.10 as compared to 39 actual runs scored. Alex Gonzalez and Eric Karros have been their most efficient hitters.

I've been enjoying Dan Shulman's call on the radio, along with his partner Dave Campbell. If you're tired of the TV babble, it's highly recommended.

From what I've heard, the Cubs should be leading by a lot more than 2-1 -- it reminds me of the Red Sox last night. When you waste opportunities early, it has a way of coming back to haunt you.

Very interesting analysis Robert. Thanks!

Pudge gives the Fish the lead!

Squandered opportunities are deadly. The Cubs have left 10 men on base, and if they lose this game, it could be the turning point in the series. I said the other night that the Marlins had to beat Wood once, and they are getting close...

Redman had no command in the first two innings. He was very very fortunate to escape allowing only 2 runs in those innings. In the Cubs 6th after two were retired, Sosa hustled an infield single and the Cubs eventually loaded the bases, but to no avail.

Wood was eating Pudge up all night, but left a 98 MPH fastball on the outer third. Pudge put his trademark line-drive opposite field swing on it. I think Wood'd have to throw it 105 MPH to get it by Pudge in that location. A slider away would have been a better choice.

Fish up 3-2 going to the 8th.

OK, time to give it a name -- Dustyball. Put the "wrong" pinch-hitter in, and he rips a triple. Then Randall the Sausage Basher goes deep, and it's 4-3 Cubs.

Best. Postseason. Ever.

Borowski hasn't looked good his last two appearances. The final out of the 8th was a hard hit ball to the rightfield wall.

Urbina was large. If the Fish don't win it in the bottom of the tenth, Jack should go to Pavano, not Looper. It's weird; I have been hoping for a Cubs-Red Sox Series, but I find myself pulling for the underdog Marlins tonight. I'm sure it's to do with all those wasted opportunities -- the Cubs, according to my sense of baseball justice, don't "deserve" to win tonight.

Dustyball makes a comeback in the eleventh as the wrong pinch-hitter, Doug Glanville this time, triples to give the Cubs the lead. I don't think the Cubs had anyone else but Glanville available. However Dustyball dictates that you give one of the worst hitters in baseball a playoff roster spot and he proceeds to smack an extra inning triple.

P.S. If it was me I would have let Prior pinch-hit before Glanville.

I never imagined Jack would use Tejera and Looper; Tejera made all lefty hitters look like Ted Williams this year, so that was two bullpen mistakes. Pavano, who is very good when he's good, gives you a chance of three or four scoreless innings.

Dusty, who did have Troy O'Leary left, gets a miracle from Glanville and is very much in the driver's seat now. Another great game.
