A tip of the cap to Jonah Keri of Baseball Prospectus for an outstanding interview with the Padres' GM. Kevin Towers was remarkably candid; in Part One, the former scout admits that he's still learning.

I've definitely changed my philosophy on pitchers. When I was an amateur scout, it was all about the radar gun. Now, I see that the guys that have success, they're strike throwers--you can throw away the JUGS gun. In this job, you have to continually change. If you stay one way, you become a dinosaur--you'll die.

Part Two is just as interesting. Towers calls himself a "sludge merchant," and provides more insight into the ways the Padres, and other teams like the Jays, are adapting.

The game has changed a lot in the last five, 10 years. Ownership expects instant returns. GMs are having more say in what goes into the amateur draft. It used to be that you'd delegate, put the scouting department in charge. Nowadays you're seeing more GMs in the draft room than there were 10 years ago.

Fascinating stuff.

Candid is right. Towers candidly talks about the shortcomings about some of his players and hints at potential deals he is trying to make. A definite must read.

Potential deal: Kotsay for Ramon Hernandez?

I don't see why Beane would make that deal, Mike. If Minnesota is going to resign Mientkiewicz and a couple of their FA pitchers, A.J. Pierzynski might be available for some "sludge". I'm guessing he's Towers' #1 target, but I'm still amazed that any GM would be so specific about his plans and so honest about his mistakes.

The A's could use Klesko's bat and Towers may be really tryng to move him for his fielding shortcomings.
Do not understand how he left Kershner on waivers if he is so high on left handendness ( levophilic ).
They will have a very potent lineup , but they are not close to have the pitching depth to be up with SF and LA.
I would love to see Lawrence in a BJ's uniform, maybe giving Kielty and Cash ( or whoever interest them ).

I think Aaron Gleeman's speculation of Ramon Castro is probably right as one of the three catchers being targeted, assuming the Marlins resign Pudge.

A very candid interview by Towers, and an interesting read. You almost never see interviews where GMs will lay out their plans so candidly and talk about bad contracts like that.
