Frank Catalanotto will be Mike Wilner's guest on the pre-pre-game show tonight (7:00, FAN 590) and will be taking calls from listeners. That's 416-870-0590 in the GTA, 1-888-666-0590 from out of town. If you're finished eating turkey, it will be worth tuning in -- Cat's a thoughtful guy who expresses himself very well.

I called in to thank Mike for doing the BB interview, and to ask Cat about his vision problem, which he confirmed as the cause of his July slump. Despite a great 5-for-5 with a HR off Derek Lowe early that month, it appeared to me that he had been swinging over the top of curveballs, which for such a great contact hitter, was unusual.

Frank said he noticed on the last road trip in June that he couldn't see the signs on the outfield wall clearly, and was having trouble picking up the spin on the ball. By mid-July, it was getting worse, and at the end of the month, he returned to the doctor in Texas who had done offseason lasik surgery. Special eye drops, used to treat glaucoma patients, seemed to solve the problem, as he hit over .400 in August.

As a result of that slump, Wilner lost a bet he made on the air that Cat would hit .300; he finished at .299, but I think he might have been closer to .320 if not for those tough few weeks when everything looked like a fastball.

I listened to the interview tonight (good question to ask, Coach) and Catalanotto continues to impress me by how eager he is to remain in Toronto. A number of Blue Jays over the years have said how much they like playing for the team, but I can't recall a player ever sounding quite like he does. It's nice to see.

It was interesting that Mike knew who you were Coach. I believe his words were "on the phone now is Kent, hello Coach".

Wilner just played the percentages. How many guys named Kent, from Toronto, would call a radio station during Thanksgiving dinner to talk baseball? It did make me laugh, though.
