Do I have to vote as an unbiased baseball observer or can I vote as a Jays fan? :)

Well, we are "Baseball from a Toronto perspective." Certainly, it's possible to be true to both and pick '92.

For me, though, the '75 and '91 Series each had five brilliant ballgames, while the '92 Classic had four (though Game One was pretty good). It was a close question, but I picked '91.

As an unbiased baseball observer I have to go with '75 it was the series that confirmed a growing love of baseball into a life passion. '91 was outstanding as well. '92, well, even then I thought that I was experiencing something that I might never again (who knew it would happen again so soon?), but let's hope not.

OFF TOPIC ...

Has anyone ever noticed that the fortunes of the Blue Jays and the Canadian Dollar seem often to be in lock-step? The loonie hit an almost 10-year high today versus the US buck (I wonder what the Jays were doing back then). The momentum of the loonie parallels the unabashed optimism many of us feel about the Ricciardi Blue Jays of the immediate future.

The CDN was at it's lowest point 3 to 5 years ago - the twilight of the Ash era.

Ah, the Yankees ...

26-12 in World Series overall, yet 1-2 in voting options for greatest World Series ever played.

And frankly, probably should be 1-3 ... how you don't include the 1960 Mazeroski series in this list is beyond me, it is. Denyszyn Bisa rears its head. Not only do you favor the Yankees losing, you don't even favor the great Pittsburge loss they had where their Pythagorean total -- I'm guessing here -- was probably 6-1 or 7-0.
Mike D - Friday, October 17 2003 @ 06:57 PM EDT (#88003) #
The '60 Series had a bang-up Game 7, but featured six ho-hum (and three really ugly) games. The Pirates' Pythagorean result in the '60 Series is unparalleled in seven-gamers...except, of course, by the '01 Yankees.

As for why more Yankees wins aren't included...in the recent era, they're prisoners of their own success. Was manhandling the Padres a "great series"? Not for San Diego, nor for fans.

Bias, you say? Here are the Yankees wins on the list of potentially Great World Series..es..es.

'23, over Giants in six
'36, over Giants in six
'47, over Dodgers in seven
'52, over Dodgers in seven
'53, over Dodgers in six
'58, over Braves in seven
'62, over Giants in seven
'77, over Dodgers in six
'78, over Dodgers in six
'96, over Braves in six

Good series, all. But do any belong on the list above? Frankly, I included '56 because I thought than any list should include at least one Yankees championship.

Well, the correlation between the two is -0.33.

So no, I hadn't noticed. Because it's just the opposite. :)

Is that correlation 1983 (first winning season) to the present?

Nope. 1977 to present.

I voted for '91, due to the fact that I saw most of it, and there were 5 1-run games. I would have included 1955, only because when I started reading about baseball history, Jackie Robinson was my favourite player and Dem Bums were my team. Ah, to be 7 in 1977 again...

How is the correlation between 1992 and 2003?

How is the correlation between 1992 and 2003?

In that case, you do get a slight positive correlation, of anywhere from .14 to .37. The correlation depends heavily on what you use as the exchange rate for the year. It's actually a non-trivial problem in economics, and depending on what date you use for the 2003 exchange rate you can change the correlation wildly. In the 1977 to 2003 sample changing the way you measured the yearly exchange rate didn't change much (the range was from -.3 to -.4).

Cheers,

Mike

FWIW, ESPN has a neat ranking of all 100 series (including 1904 and 1994). The '92 series actually ranks higher than I thought it would -- 14th.

The top 10:

1991 - Twins over Braves
1975 - Reds over Bosox
2001 - Diamondbacks over Yankees
1952 - Yankees over Dodgers
1912 - Bosox over Giants
1924 - Senators over Yankees
1958 - Yankees over Braves
1986 - Mets over Bosox
1947 - Yankees over Dodgers
2002 - Angels over Giants

When I first saw this topic, I wondered where the '93 series was, thinking it was at least better than the '92 series. Then ESPN Classic Canada started re-playing the games, and I was reminded how un-memorable the first three games were. Looking forward to Game 4 tomorrow, though! (Page 2 has the '93 series 31st, FWIW).
