So said Dave Van Horne, longtime voice for the Montreal Expos, on his many CBC-TV broadcasts with Duke Snider, and he was so right. Dave stuck with the Expos through almost 30 years of ups and downs, from Coco Laboy to Warren Cromartie to Marquis Grissom to Jose Vidro, before following all those Canadian snowbirds to Florida and taking a job with the Marlins. As a result, he finally has something the Expos could never give him: a World Series gig. If you're looking for someone to cheer for in this World Series, root for the Man with the Golden Dome to finally share in a championship.

What the Expos did give Van Horne, after 30 years of fine work, was a situation in 2000 that was intolerable. As I mentioned in another thread, part of Jeffrey Loria's scheme to get rich by destroying the franchise was to play an entire season without English-language radio or TV coverage. Still under contract, Dave wound up calling the games on the MLB Internet feed only. No wonder he flew the coop.

Back in the eighties, when I was living on the east coast, the Expos were Canada's team, or at least eastern Canada's team. Dave Van Horne was the equivalent of Tom Cheek, the main play by play guy. Dave provided me with lots of company back then, pre-TSN, when you were lucky to see a game a week on TV.

I think he is an outstanding broadcaster, better than Tom Cheek. He deserves his run with the Marlins.

There is no doubt that Van Horne is most deserving of his current situation with the National League Champions. He is an outstanding broadcaster.

Speaking of his Expos days with Snider, does anyone remember Duke's most famous comment to the media?
"You can't fool me, I'm a high school graduate!"

root for the Man with the Golden Dome

Is the roof open again? He went a few years there sporting a pretty awful rug.

Depending on your age, certain voices populate the soundtrack of your life. Some in the ZLC are old enough for radio sport broadcasts to have played a big part in their lives. For me, the voices of Dave & Duke, Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin are indelibly imprinted in my grey matter, and can define a time and a place as readily as certain songs.

There was a stretch in the 70's where it was impossible for Dave or Duke to offer up an anecdote that I hadn't already heard a million times. Their voices were like part of the furniture in my home.

Now that's a good reminder that they're someone else I can cheer "for" in this World Series besides Juan Pierre.

Dave Van Horne is undoubtedly my favourite broadcaster, closely followed by Scully, Shulman, and Miller.

Dave Van Horne was a class act for a classless organization.
That asshole, Jeffrey Loria who spent his entire time destroying the Montreal organization is a lowly jackass and I actually felt bad Dave went on to work for him some more, however, I am glad for Dave to finally broadcast that elusive Series game.

This one's for you Dave...."It's up.....up.....and awayyyyyyyyy"
