In addition to promoting Tim Huff to national cross-checker, the Jays have expanded their scouting department. Here's the press release from the Official Site. Thanks to Jeff Geauvreau for the heads-up in another thread this weekend.

Huff, you may recall, was credited in our Jon Lalonde interview for the drafting of Jamie Vermilyea. Tim is just 28 years old; youth is also the common denominator among the new hires, but you can be sure they buy into the organizational philosophy. Only longtime Angels employee Tom Burns, 48, among the new amateur scouts, is over 35. Kimball Crossley, 40, is a pro scout, which could involve "advance" scouting of opponents, in addition to evaluating potential Rule 5 and minor league free agent bargains. The others have seven busy months ahead to prepare for the draft.

I met Kimball Crossley this year at a game in Akron. He was scouting for Houston at the time, but he told me he knew JP well from their days scouting. They often crossed paths in that scouts fraternity. As Bob Elliott mentioned last week, Crossley used to be a baseball reporter in Rhode Island before switching sides.

He spoke highly of JP, and as I left I said to him, I will look for your name as a new Jays scout down the road. He just smiled.

I'm looking forward to reading Richard Griffen's column on this topic :)

One wonders if organizations like the Yankees employ a lot more area scouts than the Jays do...looks like all of these additions will have their hands full covering lots of areas. Let's hope we continue to see good results out of the '03 batch and the '04 wave provides more of the same.

As I posted on another thread, Aaron Jersild looks like a very interesting rookie Pro scout. With his prior experience as scout for Inside Edge ,the computer scouting program it looks like we have semi Keith Law type scout with Pitching experience in the minors. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Mike,

One of the new Jays scouts is a former # 43 round pick from 92 for the Jays(played 3 years in the minors ) who scouted for Inside Edge the computer scouting program from 2000-2003.

“AARON JERSILD will join the Blue Jays staff as an area scout in the upper Midwest region of the U.S. The 34-year-old's coverage will include Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and eastern Missouri. The 43rd-round draft selection of the Blue Jays in 1992 spent three seasons in the Blue Jays system from 1992-95. The former left-handed pitcher scouted from 2000-03 for Inside Edge, a computer-scouting program. "

Just a quick question, because I do not know the answer (I am not trying to be a wiseguy).

Did Ex-Jays scout, Ed Heather (Rob Ducey's stepfather) ever find or sign a notable propect for Toronto?
