What if Aaron Gleeman wrote a fine piece on the Splendid Splinter, and I decided to link to it here because I thought it was marvelous?

No need to wonder anymore. Anyway, I love it when people write about their favourite players. I heartily recommend you all (yes, each and every one of you - lurkers, posters, authors, hangers-on) go out and write a little piece on your favourite player, and send it to me. We are happy to post Pinch Hits and this sort of stuff makes great reading. Speaking of Pinch Hits, we have a massive and entertaining research project coming next week, about which I am very excited.

I agree with Craig, this is Gleeman at his finest. Hopefully Aaron won't mind me repeating here what I said to him via e-mail: It's achieving a delicate balance, applying numbers in a way that isn't confusing to the masses but also doesn't have the sabermetric crowd whining about assumptions and sample sizes, appealing to those interested in history and traditionalism as well as those interested in stats and the current game. That's my take anyways, and it's why he's been compared to Rob Neyer.

Great column. The only (minor) thing I would like to have additionally seen is the comparison of the new "aggregate" career rankings for Williamms vs. the Babe's actual career rankings.

Besides the superstars we all know and love I have a few odd favorite players: JT Snow (just is a good guy and awesome with the glove), Trot Nixon (not really sure why, he just appeals to me) and for some strange reason Pokey Reese (maybe its the name and maybe its the fielding but he's just cool to me). Besides those, like Aaron, Teddy Ballgame is my favorite alltime player with Mark McGwire a distant second.

Great piece on Williams. For those who haven't read it, Ted's "fantasy" HR total, adjusted for his 4-5 years of military service, could have been at 685 upon his retirement at the end of the 1960 season. In fact, if that's where he stood at the end of 1960, I'm betting he would have come back for one more year, given it was the first year of expansion, pitching-diluted baseball. Get up there, hit precisely 30 HRs and finish his career one ahead of the Babe (in 1960, he hit 29 HRs in just 310 PAs !!).

Think about it. Maris breaking Ruth's single season HR mark, and Williams breaking Ruth's career HR mark, all in the same season. We can dream !!
