It's been a while since we've run a "Hijack central" thread, and it's going to continue to be the case, because in accordance with new FCC mandates, I've re-named it "Weekend Open Forum." While "The Thread Formerly Known As Hijack Central" was my first choice, the new title is much less violent. True, the FCC would rather me call this "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows: Everything is Super," or "Your Mom Always Said That If You Didn't Have Anything Nice To Say, Don't Say It." But I have my limits.

I'll kick things off with this statistic: the Expos have scored 10 runs in nine games. Say that again. TEN RUNS IN NINE GAMES. For all of Bud Selig's evil machinations (as opposed to all those benevolent machinations), I don't know if we can blame Selig for this one. What the hell, let's blame him anyway.

Is it all that surprising that the Expos are tanking their scoring?

The big stick they acquired in the offseason for Vazquez has been on the DL thus far into the season.

That proven 25 HR hitter they signed over the winter to a spiffy 2 year contract is also hurt.

Oh yea, and Wilkerson is hitting .125 or something ridiculous right now.

The Expos are making people think Tom Glavine has regained his former Cy Young self! Let's go Glavine!

Oh my, I was watching their highlights on TheScore today. The announcer mentioned that stat SECONDS before promoting the home-opener that their network is broadcasting...

Isn't that more of an anti-promo???

But then again... if the Tigers (of last year) were broadcast nationally like the jays or braves, the sadistic bastard in me might find a way to watch a game or two....

This could also be the product of facing some stellar pitching. They've played 6 of 9 games against the Marlins who, according to Aaron Gleeman's article at THT today (it's a good one as always, check it out), apparently have a team ERA of 1.12 and a pitcher in Dontrell Willis who would qualify as my most prolific offensive producer were he on my BBFL hitting roster.

FCC would rather me call this "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows: Everything is Super," or "Your Mom Always Said That If You Didn't Have Anything Nice To Say, Don't Say It."
I'd question who ever gave you that info, it's my understanding that all federal agencies prefer the fear mongering model and thus the "OSAMA'S OUT TO GET US SO BUY YOUR BASEBALL TICKETS, HOTDOGS AND BEER NOW...THEN COME BACK AND TALK ABOUT IT HERE SO EVERYONE ELSE GOES OUT AND DOES THE SAME" thread would be their preference.

Jayson Stark seems to think that the Jays have a very bad defence. I'm not sure where get gets that... Woody might be a bit below average, ditto Hinske, but Wells and Hudson and Cash are all well above-average. And Delgado is way better than advertised. Anyone know about where this is coming from?

I thought I saw way too many positive spins on the Expos team during the off season. As far as I can tell, that team is horrible. Maybe I'll be wrong in the long run but they look to me like they will compete with Pittsburgh for the overall MLB basement.

The Jays have a bad defence or a bad pitching staff? (Last year of course) One would lean towards the latter of course, but...

The two do correlate, but how do you define a bad defence?

I would think our defence would be great for someone like Halladay to throw so few pitches in complete games. While the pitcher can control to an extent groundballs and flyballs (style I guess), they can't really control whether their second baseman can field the ball cleanly to make the out.

Things that don't help the Jays out last year, giving people who don't watch them everyday a bad impression: Hinske's error totals. FCat and Hinske, and to an extent Reed Johnson doesn't look good in a pair of jeans (as opposed to Vernon Wells) and that knocks them down in the defense department.

Wow, A, you're not going all libertarian on me, are you? That sounds like something I'd say! :)

The Expos will bounce back.. no big deal. It's early.

Cheers,

Mike

Jayson Stark seems to think that the Jays have a very bad defence.

Actually, he quotes scouts that think the D is bad.

FWIW - In 2003 the Jays were 10th in defensive efficiency (COMN).

I will be unable to attend tonight's game, but for Saturday and Sunday (both games at 1:00), I will be in the lovely SkyDome with a giant banner that reads KEVIN CASH FAN CLUB.

Who wants to come sit with me?

In the Toronto area you have a choice of three TV games tonight, the Jays, Braves Marlins on TBS, and Red Sox Yankees on Fox at 8. Its Vazquez and Wakefield tonight. It's a good thing.

Gitz, I went an' used this newfangled internet to be sure, but ... The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent US government agency ...

... so because in accordance with new FCC mandates plus Baseball news and analysis from a Canadian perspective ...

Wahllllll ... I know ah'm in Tejas, where our president, who is a great man, thinks Canada is the northern tip of Minnesota, but ...

As this is an open forum ....

How is it the prime rate went down 25 points on Tuesday yet every bank has raised their mortgage rates by 15 - 20 points today? Is it just some kind of conspiracy to get me? Yeah, it's time for a renewal so I'm a little bitter.

Oh, Mick, you and your literality, which is a far cry from your literacy, or even your literary writing skills, which are literally better than mine, but that's from a liberal perspecive, which Liberaci may or may not have enjoyed a libation about.

Yes, yes, it is.

Have the banks raised their mortgage rates today? I'll have to look into that. Could make for an interesting article. :)

I'll be late to the game on Saturday. Bleah.

Come find me if you see the sign. I'll hold it up whenever Cash comes up to bat, and whenever he does something good.

You're in the wrong demographic. Wait until you're buying you're first house. Given your politics, I think you could come up with some great rants about the banks and the price of mortgages. :)

I love giving the credit card companies a hard time whenever they harrass me about signing up. It always ends with a line like, "this is a capitalist society, you're supposed to buy things!" But it will take me a while to care one way or the other about mortgage rates since even my parents have never owned a house. On the other hand, I got a bank statement from TD Canada trust informing me I am to pay 3.95 in bank fees, except now I use President's Choice (anyone not already using that service should *really* consider it). Meaning Canada Trust is charging me $3.95 to not handle any of my money. Rediculous. And the NDP is the only party with a plan to curb these rediculous practices ;-)

Kerry Wood threw 131 pitches in his third start. He took the mound in the 9th with a 2-1 lead despite having already thrown 112 pitches.

Anyone see the Lakers - Rockets last night? Strange game as the Lakers seemed to dominate but couldn't pull ahead. I remember when Craig B did his basketball analysis, he said the Rockets didn't pass and man, he wasn't kidding. It's unbelievable the amount of talent on that team going to waste with their horrible offensive ball movement. Although, it's probably better for them that they don't pass as I think at one point the Rockets had three assists and 13 turnovers.
