Three teams are bunched within a game of first place in the Alomar division. My own Toronto Walrus, by virtue of a hard-fought 7-4 decision over the Springfield Isotopes, holds down top spot for another week; we're content to be playing .722 ball so far. AGF made up a lot of ground with a 9-1 thumping of Baird Brain, and the Horse Field Hammers continued their great start. Last year's cellar-dwellers defeated Garces_not_on_roids 7-5; Geoff has a lot more support for Barry Bonds in his lineup that the Giants do. Big move of the week was the Eastern Shore Birds, who swatted Red Mosquitos 10-1 to vault into a sixth-place tie.

That was quite a battle this week; Mike H. had a stellar 72.2-7-1-2.72-1.17-2.67 pitching line, but somehow I managed to win three of those categories (IP, SV and K/BB) which made the difference in the match. I want to thank my MVP, the Carlos Delgado we all know and love, for his .478 .536 .783 effort. About time, big guy. With Jim Thome (.278 .480 .778) and Raffy Palmeiro (.450 .538 .700) also mashing, this was the first week I was completely happy with my corner-the-1B-market strategy. Considering I just cut Chad Fox to make way for Torii Hunter coming off the DL, it's obvious who my LVP was, although Offerman's job is now hanging by a thread. As always, I'm open to trade offers. A similarly talented SP, SS or OF might get you one of my 1B.

Proof that the BBFL is a horrendously tough league:

My Teams

Ridiculous. Up 7-5 going into Sunday, I lost 10-2, most categories by the narrowest of margins. Sigh. I was looking at 5th or 6th - I wound up in 16th place.

Pistol Nine are going DOWN this week. Book it.

Pistol Nine over Anarchist Archivists 9-2-1.

Moral of the story - don't give a team bulletin board material. Or don't play a team when they have Dellucci and Alex Gonzalez slugging over .800 for the week.

Nice of my team to take Sunday off. Hope they're well rested for the Hammers.

Bonds award: Albert Pujols

Neifi award: Everyone else. Eight players batted .250 or worse. Special demerit to Jeff Kent for pulling a quad during a series in Denver.

Pedro award: Greg Maddux finally showed up

Lima award: Nobody pitched terribly, but all my starts came mid-week so I ended up with lame "counting" stats.
_R Billie - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 11:15 AM EDT (#15462) #
The plus (and minus) of the head-to-head format is that it somewhat simulates real games. You can have a great offensive week but if your opponent just happens to be better you still lose. It's harsh.

You figure 5 steals in most weeks will be enough to win that category except my opponent stole 7. Such is life in the BBFL. It also didn't take long for the young pitching to start breaking my heart but by some miracle my opponents have generally been pitching as poorly as I have.

I'm willing to consider trades for a front line starter though I'm not in any rush to make a deal. My most obvious depth is in the outfield (Sheffield, Ordonez, Jenkins, Drew, Dye) but my corners are pretty good too (Giambi, Ortiz, Blalock). I'm not looking to deal Crawford right now because no-one else on my team runs.

Billie, given than you won our tilt I would be more circumspect about bemoaning losing a few close categories:-).

It was the third straight heartbreaker for the Rats, losing 7-4 to the Bashers. Particularly irritating was a tie in RBI brought on by a late J.D. Drew surge, I was sure I had that won. Nevertheless, the Week 3 awards:

MVH: Richie Sexson, despite a less than stellar .217 average, managed an OBP of .379 and a SLG of .652, accounting for 10 of our 45 runs and 7 of our 40 RBI.

LVH: Jose Cruz, take a bow! 2 runs, a stolen base, and a lovely .000/.158/.000 line in six games win my ex-favourite Jay the least valuable hitter award.

MVP: It's gotta be Zach Day, who threw 15 innings with a 0.60 ERA and won two games.

LVP: Mark Buehrle, whose unsightly 2.28 WHIP was multiplied over 9 and two thirds innings.

As always, I caution this week's opponents, the hated Mosquitos, to beware the Rats.

The Gorillas' bats woke up in the latter part of the week, putting together a sweep offensively. With Teixeira and Floyd on the DL, I wasn't sure how things would pan out for the two weeks they'd be gone. Once again, fortunately, the waiver wire bailed me out.

Torii's back, but that didn't stop Lew Ford from putting together another solid week (409/458/727 with 6R, 7RBI). The real gem was a guy I had originally drafted, only to drop after limited playing time. I picked up Matt Kata again after Alomar broke his hand, and he responded with 13 hits in 23 AB, posting a 545/600/727 line with 5 R&RBI and a stolen base to capture the Bonds Award (apologies to Laynce Nix's .875 SLG and 10RBI). The slumping Matos gets his first Neifi, as A-Rod finally gets something going.

I was lucky to win even two pitching categories against the Thunderbirds. He's got EIGHT quality starters, so I knew I was beat in the IP department and cut back on Lima Award winner, Jason Johnson's, second start of the week. I'll give the Pedro to my bullpen of Smoltz, K-Rod, Lidge, and Reitsma for their combined 14.1 IP, 0.77 WHIP, and 20K/2BB.

The Cannibals came back to earth this week, posting a .241/.329/.395 line. The Magicians outhit me by a lot, but somehow I managed to rack up enough RBI to avoid getting shutout in the hitting categories. Wound up with a 5-7 loss, and that's lucky considering how bad my guys played.

Bad, bad weeks from some guys who started on fire:
Scutaro, .207/.258/.241 (playing SS, maybe distracted)
Edmonds, .167/.259/.458, 1 SB
C. Pena, .120/.233/.240
J. Lopez .231/.259/.269
Bellhorn .125/.241/.250

Todd Walker, Adrian Beltre and Rondell White all had good weeks to balance the suckitude, but White takes the Bonds despite worse rate stats than the other nominees:

White .387/.412/.774, 8 R 11 RBI

On the mound, I fared a little better, though a miserable start by Jaret Wright and a rough outing by Neil Cotts cost me K:BB by a narrow margin. Don't know what to make of Ishii- 2 starts, one that had me tempted to drop him, then a CG shutout last night. Some really good outings by my pitchers didn't net wins, so Pedro goes to:

Jason Isringhausen 4.2 IP, 1 W, 1 SV 1.93 ERA/.64 WHIP/ INF K:BB (too lazy too look up specific)

I need another starter, or need Claussen and Soriano to get recalled, because I'm likely going to lose IP every week. Pitching is so thin in this league though...

Tough week coming up against AGF's powerhouse. Should be a good one.

I seem to have every slumping player in baseball. Check out the season stats for some of my "stars":

John Olerud: .224 average
Eric Hinske: .212 average
Derek Jeter: .175/.250/.213 in 80ABs!
Vernon Wells: .221/.286/.351

And that doesn't include guys like Tony Batista (.206 average) and Brian Schneider (.213 average) who you don't expect star numbers from.

The only group of players that is overperforming is my bullpen, which I had good players in spades to begin with. Blech.

My offense continues to surprise me, though a good portion of my lineup is playing over its head - I'll take the wins while they come! Pitching was average this week, but Garces had a terrific week, especially rate wise. Clemens came back to earth a little bit, and Schmidt is showing a lot of rust - hopefully my biggest offseason pickup will turn things around soon.

BONDS - goes to Bonds again. His rate stats are a huge boost - OPS over 2.000 is just wonderful. Mike Lowell and Mark Loretta both had OPS's over 1.000 with good counting stats, and Dave Roberts continues to give me great SB production.

NEIFI - A. Pierzynski compiled a line of 0 for me. No runs, no RBI's, no SB, and .000 in the rate stats. I ended up benching him over the weekend and missed his 2 RBI's. Unacceptable production from an 11th round pick, and someone who is supposed to be a decent hitter.

PEDRO - I'm going to give this to Foulke, who won me saves with 3, netted me a win, and pitched 5 good innings.

LIMA - goes to Schmidt - I traded Thome for him, and so far he hasn't been worth it (though to be fair, Lowell came with him, and Lowell has been very good so far). 4 innings of 13.5 ERA? UGH.

I was lucky this week - Garces would have tied me if CC Sabathia hadn't been scratched from his scheduled start.
_David Armitage - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 01:24 PM EDT (#15472) #
The Elitists had an average win that got a little nerve racking come Sunday, barely holding off the hard charging Sweaty Guys for a 7-5 victory. The key to the week was a rebound in pitching from week 2. Newly signed IF Juan Castro isn't expected to do much other than fill a previously empty MI spot. The Elitists also wish Josh Towers good luck in the future, but he just could not retain a spot in the lineup.

BondsGoes to suprisingly Rocco Baldelli, who hopefully is coming back from a horrible first two weeks of the season. Rocco hit .381/.409/.524, with 6 R, 2 RBI, and 2 SB, which have been missing from the rest of the squad so far.

NeifiA tie between V Dub's .148/.207/.185 (let's hope yesterday was a sign of things to come) and Carlos Pena's .120/.233./.240. Together they managed a paltry 7/52.

Pedro I have nothing to complain about Vazquez's week, 14 IP, 1 W, and a 1.93/0.86/4.67 ERA/WHIP/K-BB line.

Lima Nothing much to worry about, although Leskanic isn't doing much to impress anyone right now. Franklin is also looking somewhat troublesome in the Giants bullpen, but then again it's only Week 3 right now.

The Elitists play Freddy Beach Fracas this week, hoping to move up gradually and stay in the race (nice to see team junior felix demolish someone other than me, that team is on fire.)
_Cristian - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 01:52 PM EDT (#15473) #
Of course who does team junior felix get to destroy next? Why that would Team DL uhh I mean the Edmonton Decepticons. The Decepticons had a strong week winning 10-2 and vaulting up to 4th place. The 10-2 win is deceiving. Had I faced team junior felix last week, my team would have been the one on the ugly side of a 10-2 loss. It would have been nice to get my players healthy before taking on the number 1 team in the league but it looks like I'll be requiring a superhuman effort from my scrubs until Teixeira, Jason Bay, Jose Reyes, and BH Kim come off the DL. Hopefully, David DeJesus, newly stolen off the free agent list can help. Anyway, on to the awards.

Bonds: Goes to Carlos Beltran. A .278/.440/.611 week with 7 runs, 5 rbi, and 3 steals is just enough to not make me regret choosing him 5th overall---3 picks before Barry Bonds was selected.

Neifi: Terrmel Sledge managed to avoid the award last week because he was drafted midweek. No luck for him this week as a .150/.150/.200 week makes me wonder whether I wasted my high waiver wire priority on a guy who'll eventually have to be sent down to AAA. If he does, at least he'll be coming to Edmonton where I can heckle him mercilessly.

Pedro: Sidney Ponson had a complete game victory early in the week. The award would have gone to someone else had I not had the foresight to sit him against the Jays yesterday.

Lima: Mark Buerhrle. I expected a return to form to a solid 2002 season. I'd sit him and ride out his struggles but he is my putative ace.

*sniffle* First place just felt so good ;-)

BONDS: This has to be a tie between a guy you'd expect to be here and a guy that would normally be on the bench. *Channels Rob Neyer*

PLAYER A: 7/4/0/.278/.480/.778
PLAYER B: 2/3/0/.364/.462/.818

I guess Player A (Jim Thome) really is more deserving with thos counting stats, but I have a soft spot for Player B (Mike Redmond).

NEIFI: Miguel Olivo wins this one in a landslide. And to think he had my hopes so darn high... 1/0/0/.091/.231/.091

PEDRO: Fransisco Cordero, my lone closer, almost won me the SV stat this week losing 4-3 to superdevin's Super-Closer-Combo of Mariano Rivera , Jorge Julio and (this week anyway) Mike Timlin. 3.1/0/3/0.00/1.20/1.33

LIMA: Dustin Hermansen gets this award though, thankfully, his rate stats were only spread over 3.2 innings. 3.2/0/0/14.73/3.00/1.00

In the end, I went down in a humbline fashion 11-1 to team junior felix to relinquish the top spot in Barfield. Well done, superdevin *shakes fist*

How much of your standing is due to Superman?

Pretty much all of the batting part. Swap Bonds for Vernon Wells, Bobby Abreu, or Larry Walker (DL), and it's a lot closer. I still have more pitching wins in Leftovers than in the BBFL, though.

I still can't believe he fell to me.
_Shrike - Monday, April 26 2004 @ 10:33 PM EDT (#15482) #
The Vancouver Cyphers front office is reeling from the latest news that Austin Kearns and Randall "The Sausage King" Simon have joined Carl Everett, Jerry Hairston Jr. and A.J. Burnett on the disabled list. The latest rash of injuries to Kearns and Simon is a cruel blow just as management was welcoming back the returning Torii Hunter.

In related news, the Cyphers brain trust is still willing to trade from its wealth of middle infielders to shore up their beleaguered pitching staff, which definitely needs to be strengthened to better complement the depleted, yet still potent, offensive attack of the Vancouver team.
_Cristian - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 12:44 AM EDT (#15483) #
That sucks Shrike. However that is still no excuse for you to offer me the carcass of Tony Batista for my shiny Jason Isringhausen. I'm just joking. However, with Koch losing his job as closer I can't afford to lose Izzy. If it makes you feel better the lack of DL slots has really hurt the Edmonton Decepticons this year as well.
_Shrike - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 01:56 AM EDT (#15484) #
No offense taken, Cristian.

I seem to be mis-reading the value others are placing on pitching so far in Barfield. I guess I'm just grumpy that my offers get rejected outright, or people expect me to trade Derek Jeter or Edgar Renteria straight up for a starting pitcher who's clearly not an ace. To me, I'd be paying much too much of a premium unless the pitcher was named Javier Vazquez, or someone of comparable quality. I always try to include a note with the approximate value I put on the players involved in a trade. Ah well.
_Cristian - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 02:23 AM EDT (#15485) #
Personally, I think that position players are more scarce than pitchers in Barfield. It's hard picking up players who will get at bats. There are still pitchers available who I wouldn't mind slotting into my roster. I even had to dump Carlos Silva and his 3 wins in order to find more at bats.

As for getting ridiculous trade offers, I've sent my share and received more than my share. It's only natural to test out your competition early in the season. If there is a fool in the league, you have to find him and deal with him before someone else does. To the league's credit, I haven't found the fool and I've stopped looking.
_Rob - Tuesday, April 27 2004 @ 12:46 PM EDT (#15486) #
I still can't believe [Bonds] fell to me.

Well, you had the 9th pick and I was too busy NOT checking the injury lists, and I took Prior at 8th. Had I gone to ESPN.com once that week, Superman would be mine and you wouldn't have destroyed me 12-0 in Week 1! :)

dp: Tough week coming up against AGF's powerhouse.

While the standings might tell a different story the powerhouse label is quite an irony. My best slugging hitters are M.Giles (great 2B, but...), Patterson and Conine! My unintended strategy of "if you can't get who you love (ie. Bonds), love who you get" meant that I drafted the terribly impressive surrounding cast of Tucker, Snow and Alfonzo with a combined line of 220/302/289 for the season. I guess the real potency of my offense was revealed in week 2 with the total of 13 runs scored. I am fairly happy with my pitching of Randy, C. Zambrano, Moyer, Bonderman, Harden, Estes(!), Rivera and eventually Armas and Lieber, but I have no idea how I have been able to get two big victories in the three weeks. Guess it has to do with the law of averages and H2H format.

Shrike, I've looked at your MI and the rest of your roster for quite a while now drafting some potential trades, but in the end I just don't think we matchup. It was nice "doing business" with you, though ;-)

In the current week, Craig and I are locked in a duel for Worst. Pitching. Ever. Fortunately for me, Craig forgot to bench Darren Oliver and Jason Jennings, who have been smoked in Coors, giving me a temporary "edge" in E.R.A. There's still plenty of time for me to get pounded, however ...

Worst. Pitching. Ever.
I haven't looked at Craig and Gitz' pitching numbers but after having just said that I am happy about my pitching Estes blows up in Colorado, and Zambrano in Arizona. To add insult to injury Mecir gave up 5 runs, 4 hits and a walk all without getting one single batter out...

I'm now up to six Cyphers on the DL. David Eckstein decided to pop his groin .

Donkit R.K., forgive my ignorance, but which squad are you the mastermind of?

Capers, Shrike... since I posted about our teams not matching up you sent me another proposal ( a bit different than before) to which I countered.

Oliver and Jennings?!? And he plays them?!? Wow... they're both free agents in Alomar.

I think we have our deal, Shrike.

That was pretty sweet...as much as I was pulling for the A's, if they were going to lose, that's the best outcome I oculd hope for...

If only I could get some hitting this week.

Yes, that deal is ready to go. As soon as you approve it, we can say we've done a blockbuster.
