After defeating Baird Brain 9-2, my Toronto Walrus remains atop the BBFL Alomar division for another week, with a 4.5 game cushion over the Horse Field Hammers, who were 8-3 winners over the Eastern Shore Birds. Four games farther back, Billie's Bashers are third despite dropping a 6-5 decision to the Springfield Isotopes, then there's a virtual tie for fourth. With a 10-2 rout of the Thunderbirds, the Chatsworth Halos moved up; AGF, whipped 10-2 by Reykjavik Fish Candy, slipped a couple of notches from second. Hannibals Cannibals, after beating Gashouse Gorillas 9-2, are now sixth. The big move of the week was by Red Mosquitos, who stung Jick’s Rays 11-1 to get back to .500 and advance from 17th place up to 12th.

In a week when neither team hit particularly well, my guys outlasted Jurgen's in every category but OBP. Both teams got good pitching; mine was just a bit better. MVP Curt Schilling anchored the staff with 16 IP, a win, 1.69 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and a nifty 14.00 K/BB, while Carlos Silva and Freddy Garcia each chipped in with an impressive win.

As with all my deals, I hope the trade with the Fish Candy helps both teams. Bobby Abreu could have a big year in the new Philly park, hitting in front of Jim Thome, and I consider him a keeper candidate for next season. Mike gets two solid OF (Hunter and Damon) for one and a throw-in MI, but I actually need Relaford, at least temporarily, with Polanco on the DL and Spivey limping.

Fresh off a 9-3 victory over Garces_not_on_roids, the Rats are in the first division for the first time since, um, ever. Blinking in the unaccustomed light, our furry heroes now prepare to face the Eastern Shore Birds in a titantic battle of midpack teams. On to the week 5 awards!

MVH: Carlos Guillen, in a walk. 7 runs, 7 RBI, and a nifty .455/.538/.818 line.

LVH: Brad's favourite Padre, Sean Burroughs, scored one, drove in one and posted a .278/.278/.333 line. It was a good week.

MVP: Josh Beckett went 14 innings, won a game, and managed a 1.29 ERA with a WHIP of 0.86 and a K/BB ratio of 2.50

LVP: Kip Wells was less than stellar, giving up 5 runs in as many innings, with a WHIP of 2.60 and a K/BB ratio of 1.20

Bring on the Birds.

As with all my deals, I hope the trade with the Fish Candy helps both teams.

I think it will. I had to think about it for all of 10 seconds. It might hurt me in the long run because I might not have room to keep both Damon and Hunter, but I can always package a couple of them together at the deadline if I'm in no risk of a playoff spot or relegation.

If Jeter would start hitting, I might have a chance at having another 10-2 week. I didn't think my team was all that bad, though we are very closer heavy.

I vaguely remember winning the title last year. Seems many years ago.

MVH: Jeff Kent, .323/.344/.722, 7 runs, 7 RBI, 1 steal
LVH: Jason Kendall, .120/.154/.120, 1 run, 2 RBI. Nine of my batters hit .222 or worse. Life is good.

MVP: Andy Pettitte, 2 wins 11.1 innings, 1.64 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 2.17 K/BB
LVP: The bloom is off Eric Dubose's rose: 2 starts, 9 innings, 8.00 ERA, 2.22 WHIP, 1.22 K/BB
Pistol - Monday, May 10 2004 @ 03:39 PM EDT (#66641) #
Over in Barfield the Pistol Nine battled to a draw with former 1st place Ghost Man on Third. A 9th inning non-save situation appearance by Baez yesterday gave me the 2.79-2.76 edge in K/BB. Fantasy baseball at its best.

Overall, the Pistol Nine is in 6th place and would be a wild card team if the season ended today.

I seem to vaguely remember having the best overall record last year. Also a distant memory.

Bonds: Micheal Young has now claimed it 3 out of the 5 weeks thus far, .429/.467/.857 with 6R and 9RBI.
Neifi: 6 of my batters hit .190 or worse, but Konerko's .056/.150/.056, 1R, and 0RBI takes the cake.
Pedro: Nobody earned a win, but Hudson's 9 inning performance wasn't too bad.
Lima: Uh, yeah. I've been cycling through the Waiver Wire Flavors of the week, and let me tell you, they don't taste so good. Donovan Osborne gets it because even though he gave up 6 hits, 2 walks, and 6 runs in 1 1/3 IP, the Yankees still won.

The Capers are back on track!

MVH - Jody Gerut, who won the SB category all by his lonesome (with 1) and put up a nice 9/5/1/.379/.455/.621 line.

LVH - Catcher Mike Redmond with his rather ufly 1/0/0/.000/.143/.000 line. Luckily for me, he only had 6 AB

MVP - I can't decide between 14 masterful Josh Beckett innings ( 14/1/0/1.29/0.86/2.50) or 2 wins by my favorite FA pick up ever, Rodrigo Lopez (5.2/2/0/0.00/0.88/2.50)

LVP - *shudder* Paul Abbot... 3.1/0/0/24.30/3.00/1.00
_R Billie - Monday, May 10 2004 @ 06:17 PM EDT (#66644) #
My RBI production fell this week and a couple of week pitching starts on Sunday cost me the win as I lost rate stats in pursuit of an extra win or two.

I'm going to be a bit shorthanded in RBI now that Pierre replaces Sheffield and Prior won't be back until early June at the soonest. At least Mussina seems to be rounding into form in the meantime.
_Rob Andrew - Monday, May 10 2004 @ 06:29 PM EDT (#66646) #
The Good Sports all in all had a mediocre week, but we were still unlucky to lose by the margin we did. Our pitching was actually pretty good, at least until a desperate Donovan Osborne start, but WAMCO still took that side of the ledger 5-1. Their pitching line for the week was a tremendous 48.2/4/5/2.03/0.99/2.88.

Bonds: Mid-week aquisition Alex Sanchez gets the nod in a week where no one really stood out. Carlos Guillen, the guy I trade for Sanchez, was even better.
Neifi: Royce Clayton didn't enjoy the week away from Coors Field. He hit a paltry 150/227/350, though he did throw in a SB.
Pedro: Even though he didn't get the W, Jason Schmidt had my best start for the week.
Lima: Not sure why I thought picking up Donovan Osborne was a good idea.

The Edmonton Decepticons climbed back into 4th place with their 3rd victory in a row. The Decepticons managed a 7-5 victory over The Sweaty Guys in a tough match with 5 incredibly close categories. With the Decepticon pitching still looking to get on track, a balanced offence was needed to secure a win. The Decepticon offence will be severely tested this week as they welcome Barry Bonds and the rest of Freddy Beach Fracas to Cybertron Stadium. A continuation of Barry's slump will do wonders for the Decepticon chances of a 4th consecutive victory.

Week 5 Awards:

MVH: Carlos Guillen. Acquired in a midweek trade for the carcass of Alex Sanchez, Carlos put up a .462/.500/1.000 line to go along with 6 runs and 6 rbis.

LVH: Mark DeRosa (.130/.125/.130). Drafted for his positional versatility, DeRosa has had one bad week after another. He has until Juan Uribe gains 2B eligibility to turn his season around. The Decepticons don't stand for consistently crappy performance; just ask Starscream.

MVP: Brett Myers (14 IP, 1.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 9 K/BB) turned in the best week in the short history of the Decepticon franchise. It looks like he'll give Scott Schoeneweis a run for staff ace (pretty sad, huh?).

LVP: Eric Dubose. Lucas is right. The bloom is definitely off the Dubose rose. He was going to be dropped this morning for waiver wire refugee Chad Bradford, however someone beat me to Bradford so it looks like Dubose will be given one more turn in the rotation.

A good week warming up for king Walrus. Biggest move was using my waiver priority on Justin Miller, swapping him for middle reliever Neal Cotts. I'm a little wary of grabbing Miller, especially given the value of a high waiver priority in BBFL, but I need the SP.

My hitters just did their jobs this week, going .289/.340/.475 with 50 RBI and 57 R to almost sweep hitting (tied for SB). Pitching was decent, I got a little lucky there.

Bonds: Tough call- some good weeks with rate stats, but I give it to Jim Edmonds- .318/.423/.591 4/7
Pedro: Goes to Isrnghausen- 3 saves, 0 ER, 3.1 IP. None of my starters were dominant
Lima: Webb, after a great week last time, 5 IP, 9.00 ER, 1.80 WHIP
Nefi: Carlos Pena- .174/.291/.348, still managed 6 R/5RBI

Another decent week for my Halos, but much like their namesake in Anaheim, could be trouble now with the injury rash hitting Anderson, Guillen and newly acquired Erstad. All are on the DL with no light at the end of the tunnel, so I'm hoping Cesar Izturis starts hitting for power.
Congrats, Coach, for your team's hot start (though you're giving Mike 2 of my favorite players in that trade)!
By the way, I willing to take the Rats LVH off their hands...

The Archivists had their first good week since Week One, riding the offense and a volume of pitching to a 7-4 win over Schroedinger's Bat. AA have made a conscious decision to punt saves, play the starters hard, and try to win the volume categories with its weak pitching staff, while riding a good offense. Finally, this week the offense complied.

Bonds : Todd Walker. Toddy Ballgame came through big, hitting .333/.429/.583 with seven runs scored and four RBI, and "made the difference" in four offensive categories.

Neifi : Andruw Jones. .083/.120/.208 didn't end up hurting AA as we went 5-0-1 on offense.

Pedro : Jarrod Washburn. When you just try to win on volume, sometimes results matter less. Washburn had a 4.73 ERA and just a 1.35 WHIP but he got two wins and 13.1 IP, supplementing our only two wins in pitching.

Lima : Jason Johnson. 5 7 6 6 4 1 is uuuuuuugly.

waiver wire refugee Chad Bradford

There comes a time when you throw 'small sample size' out the window and say this guy is killing me and there's better alternatives. I reached that point last week with Bradford.

Operation Shutdown II (Mondesi) is a bit of a drain on my offense. If anyone in Barfield is looking for a starter (or reliever) I'm looking for a bat. I have Morris, Millwood, Pettitte, and Thomson available as starters. I'm willing to do a 2-1 trade if necessary as I have Donnelly coming off the DL soon and can throw in a reliever to even out a trade.
