As we all know, free agency has been going on for a little while now and the arbitration deadline is today (Saturday) at midnight. As a result, a number of players are going to suddenly be shed by their current teams and discarded into the free agent pool. Some players that have already been let go include: Garrett Atkins (Colorado), and Kelly Johnson (Atlanta). Keeping in mind a modest budget, who do you think Toronto should go after, either through trade or free agency? I have my own suggest after the jump.

Atlanta's Kelly Johnson has just been cut by the Braves, and could be an interesting addition to the Jays. He had a solid offensive campaign in both '07 and '08. Injuries, not considered career-damaging, caused some issues during his '09 campaign and he slipped to a line of .224/.303/.389. At his best, though, the 27-year-old infielder displays a willingness to take a walk (13.2 BB% in '07) and he has some pop (.165 ISO in '09). A BABIP of just .249 dragged down his production this past season.

On the plus side of Johnson, he's shown a reduced K-rate each season since '05 (down to 17.8% in '09) and consistently makes at least average contact on pitches that he offers at. He's also a proven fastball hitter, who has shown flashes of an ability to hit breaking balls over the past two seasons. In the middle of his "peak years," Johnson could still possess some upside at the plate.

He's not a great fielder at second base (-10.7 UZR/150 in '08), but that's OK. Toronto has Aaron Hill, a solid fielder, at the keystone. Johnson did post a solid 17.9 UZR/150 in left field during a 79-game stretch in '05. Toronto is currently light on outfielders, and Johnson could be the answer in left, as long as Toronto is OK with Adam Lind at first base or DH and Travis Snider in right field or DH. The club has, unfortunately, committed to Vernon Wells in center field (-18.7 UZR/150) for the foreseeable future, according to the club's new GM Alex Anthopoulos. The club has also recently been linked with outfielder Joey Gathright, but Johnson would certainly be an offensive upgrade.

According to Cot's Contracts, Johnson earned $2.8 million in '09. Given that he's coming off of an injury, perhaps Toronto could offer an incentive-based deal with a starting salary representing a 15% decrease in salary, which would give him a salary around $2.2 million. Toronto would be getting a player who should be worth two to three wins a season, if not more by switching positions. If you take a look at the Bill James' projection on Johnson for 2010, he agrees that Johnson is due for a bounce back season.

Chin-Ming Wang has been non tendered, I would love to see the Jays take a chance on him. Especially if Roy Halladay is traded. As we have saw in the past you can never have enough starting pitching. I personally would like to see Brett Cecil back in AAA untill he proves he can dominate there. So that leaves the team with Romero, Marcum, Rzepczynski, Richmond, and (possible starter in Halladay deal). So another starter would be nice.

Marc, I agree completely about Johnson. However, I think he'll draw a lot of interest and, if he wants to stay at 2B, can find a team that will give a starting job there. Still, I hope AA places a phone call and tries to convince him his future lies in LF.

However, IIRC, he had arm surgery a couple years back and that robbed his arm of most of its strength. Perhaps you can hide in left, but I think that more or less limits him to 2B (and would prevent moving him to 3B, as well).

I just want a really fast player on the team. What I wouldn't give for a in his prime Brett Butler.

If the team isn't in a position to contend, I would take a chance on Jonny Gomes to fill the spot of J. Batista.

Agreed Brent.  Its amazing how happy I was when I heard Gathright was a possibility.

With Scutaro and Barajas gone and Gonzalez/McDonald combo at shortshop, I think in my opinion to get a quality catcher and an outfielder who posses abilities of basestealing and getting on base. In general, it is much easier to get a speedy outfielder and an on-base machine at catcher than the other possible way. As some posters above comment on the former possible player acquisition, let me chip in about the catcher position.

Jason Kendall would be a match in this category, but he was signed to 2-years for the Brewers; Who else?

Luke Carlin, Josh Bard, J. R. House, Matt Treanor (from the MLB free agent list)

For posters who are interested in player movements of the Jays' farm system: the Royals signed Buck Coats a minor league contract with invitation.

In AAA, J. D. Closser and Chris Stewart.

Nice comments from Marc and Thomas. I don't know KJ come to T.O..

Ryan Church is a decent defensive OF and his numbers vs. LHP have been pretty good so he could be a good platoon/defensive partner for Snider.  If the Jays go with their usual big bullpen, however, there won't be much room for the extra guys, and they seem to like Bautista - apparently because he is also insurance for an Encarnacion breakdown.  Church might be better defensively than anyone the Jays have right now.

So, with Chavez now out of the picture, anyone have any ideas how AA plans to fill two catching vacancies?  Revisting the Snyder/Overbay deal?

I hope GM AA has some plans set for C because he won't have much leverage now.

Ryan Church, RF - With a career line of .272/.345/.441 and strong right field defense, Church would at the least make a solid fourth outfielder.

Good eye.  Let's keep an eye on the bigger picture here - Who plays Right Field?  This is not a bad pickup for RF.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/interesting-nontenders.html#comments is my source.

Jose Arredondo:  Armed with a 94 mph fastball, Arredondo posted a 1.62 ERA, 8.1 K/9, and 3.2 BB/9 as a rookie in '08.  He struggled this year and is now scheduled for Tommy John surgery.  He could be signed with an eye on 2011.

Ryan Church, RF - With a career line of .272/.345/.441 and strong right field defense, Church would at the least make a solid fourth outfielder.

Jonny Gomes, OF - Gomes, 29, hit .267/.338/.541 in 314 plate appearances for the Reds this year, though he did get to face lefties 35% of the time.  He's had a hard time shaking the platoon bat label due to a .224/.311/.448 career line against righties

Chien-Ming Wang, SP - Wang, 30 in March, had strong years in '06 and '07 as the Yankees' mid-rotation groundball specialist.  He had shoulder surgery in July but hopes to be ready by May 1st

Matt Capps, RP - The decision to let Capps go was a surprise move by the Pirates.  The 26-year-old did fine work closing for the Bucs in 2007 and '08.  His career BB/9 is just 1.7.  His elbow was bruised twice this year, but Capps was otherwise healthy as his hits and home runs allowed ballooned.

Some fill holes, some are upgrades, some have upside and some are great deals.

John Buck would be an OK catcher for 2010.

Seriously, what kind of leverage did Chavez offer the Jays in negotiating with other catchers?  I'm not sure Arencibia and even Jeroloman don't offer as much or more.

I expect that at least one of Navarro, Doumit, Snyder and Napoli will be a Jay next year.  I also expect that Chavez will be brought back at the minimum too.

John Buck would be an OK catcher for 2010.

Agreed. There's a bunch of indistinguishable catchers available with Barajas's profile: low OBP, some power, decent defense. Buck fits in well with that group. Given that two teams needing catchers have unimaginably opted for the more expensive, less talented, Ivan Rodriguez and Jason Kendall, that's two fewer teams to compete with. And another team, perhaps the Mets, figures to offer Bengie Molina a contract disproportionate to his skills, so the competition will be reduced by yet one more team.

I'm sure Buck's agent is looking at Toronto as a possible location where his client could once again be a starter and boost his value for 2011.

The Mariners are looking to trade Morrow for a bat or 2. They want a DH or 1st basemen or both. They have talked Gamel for Morrow.

Overybay and Snider for Morrow and Triunfel.

I love Snider but Morrow would give us a potential ace and he is MLB ready to join Romero at the top of the rotation. Triunfel would give us a SS of the future. Wallace gets a home at 1st right away.

Just a thought.

The Yanks should be willing to deal Gardner for  a reliever, why we havent explored this is beyond me. Vernon cant play CF anymore anyways and we never have trouble developing relievers.
