... as has been reported here recently (and many, many times previous to that), Roy "Doc" Halladay (3-0, 1.13) is pretty good.

As if his usual doctoral brilliance weren't enough, Halladay, whose career batting average lies just south of .080, now sports a three-game hitting streak. Doctor, doctor ...

Travis d'Arnaud is pretty good.

I watched this game, and the scary thing is that this was one of Doc's off nights - he never seemed to get a real good command of his pitches. A shame the rain delay ended his start, as I would like to see him rip through a long consecutive CG streak. Halladay got his 3rd hit in as many games and is now batting .279, and the Phillies guys were remarking how he looks more comfortable at the plate and seems intent on not giving away free outs to the other pitcher. I believe he improved tonight to a career 108-7 with 5 runs of support, and there's really no limit to how many games he can win pitching in front of a prolific offense like that. Denny McLean, here comes Da Doc (or, maybe slightly more realistic, Carlton's 27 wins in 72).

I am pleased to see that Wells hit a pitch that was 90+ mph for a homerun (91mph). I think I can believe he's for real now.

a two-game hitting streak

You mean a three-game hitting streak.

Wells is on a pace to hit 88 HR. That is not real, forget it.

The illusion should last until the Jays come back from KC, that's when I expect the harsh reality to settle in.

I have tremendous respect for Roy Halladay - he pitched his heart out while he was here, and he always behaved with dignity and class. (He took out a full page ad thanking the fans of Toronto after he left town.) I would never boo him, and I wish him well in Philadelphia.

But he's not a Blue Jay any more, so I don't follow him now. He's one of Them (which encompasses everybody that is Not A Blue Jay).

(By the way, I hope somebody can update the Batter's Box image at the top of this page - can Lind go up there in place of Halladay?)

As for Wells - he's not going to keep hitting like he has been, but he's clearly better than he was last year - perhaps because he's healthy.

I concur with Dave. I'm just not that into Roy anymore, now that he's all happy about not being in Toronto. Good luck to him, though. I respect what he did and what he will still do.

And Wells looks like a different hitter. His bat speed looks tremendous. Amazing what you can do with a sound wrist.
Parker - Saturday, April 17 2010 @ 11:37 AM EDT (#213800) #

Yeah, he sure did suck in road games last year with his "injured" wrist.

Parker - Saturday, April 17 2010 @ 11:47 AM EDT (#213803) #

Sorry folks, my last comment tasted a little sour.  I guess I'm getting tired of having to remind people that Wells' wrist only bothered him in home games last year.

In all seriousness, I think there's a lot to be said about the psychological side of this.  If Wells THINKS he's healthy, maybe that makes a difference.  If Wells figures that he was so awful that he can only improve on last year's numbers, he likely feels less pressure in front of the fans and that probably makes a difference too.  It might even be that with the emergence of Hill and Lind as premium hitters, he can go back to his flying-under-the-radar play that made him so successful in earlier years when he wasn't expected to be the team's best hitter.

Consider Vernon Wells' job description: his job requirements called for him to hit like Carlos Delgado, field like Devon White, and serve as the inspirational team leader. All because he is being paid all that money.

I think the same way about him now as I did when he was struggling: if he is trying his hardest to be the best baseball player he can be, that's all you can ask. And he seems to have been doing that.

He'll never earn his salary - who could, now that the market has finally stabilized? - but he seems to be a quality player again. At least for now.

Spifficus - Saturday, April 17 2010 @ 12:14 PM EDT (#213806) #
Aww, c'mon. Not the home/road thing again. You're probably right that the psychology of health is as important as the health itself. I just want to head off the home/road thing before someone starts talking about it seriously... It was a BABIP aberration. Normalize that, and the rest of the numbers fall in line. It doesn't take a strong wrist to bounce a grounder up the middle instead of to the SS.

The last really phenomenal W season for a starter was Bob Welch's 1990 campaign for the A's when he went 27-6 (33 decisions in 35 starts), despite relatively unimpressive peripherals.  He actually wasn't even the best SP on the team that year the way Dave Stewart was dealing...

It would be really cool if Doc could touch 25 wins, more so for the long overdue credit he would finally earn than anything else.

I think that might be overstating it, Dave. I think that general fandom has moved far beyond asking for the moon from Wells. Were he to put up an OPS+ of 110, that would go a long, long way to winning back the fans (the presumption being that such an OPS+ would translate into an impressive AVG/HR/RBI line). Everybody loves a feel good, comeback story, especially if it can be twisted into one of redemption (whether said twisting logic applies or not).

As for his defense, I would guess that his reputation still exceeds his actual level, so he's probably not getting as much grief on that front as he otherwise might. I've heard casual fans still refer to him as a Gold Glove caliber center fielder.

It is certainly true that were Wells a third-year player, say, making a million bucks he would inspire far less wrath. But fans reward performance, not effort (unless you're a scrappy, little player overachieving in a big man's world), all the while heavily factoring salary into their calculus. And whether this is all fair or not seems to have precious little to do with fans' actual behaviour.

Huh. So, I was just checking out the Texas / Yankees game from last night and in the bottom of the 4th A-Rod managed to successfully emulate Pierzynski on a ball that bounced directly between both feet. And yet somehow it's not actually surprising...

I remember when JP came in and started cleaning up Ash's mess. It was awesome. He was ditching expensive strikeout machines and everything looked great.

AA is now doing everything JP couldn't. He got his SS prospect, and now got some speed for the bench. I love how he is able to make things happen. Now, if only he can fix the Overbay thing.

I'm also tired of hearing people say Wells was good on the road last year, so it couldn't have been his wrist. First, he wasn't that good on the road (.779 OPS). Second, he had essentially the same split with no one on base (.787 OPS, vs. .629 no one on). He was also terrible against lefties last year, which again, aside from random variation during a bad year, what possible explanation is there?

Wells had a bad year, with some good stretches in it that happened on the road or with the base empty (career, he's better at home and slightly better with runners on base). I'm more than willing to chalk it up to injury and recovery if he comes back reasonably strong this year. His defense was at least as much an issue as his hitting anyway. It's too early to look at defensive numbers - any thoughts as to whether he's looked better? I've thought on many occasions already the outfield defense is awful this year, but I haven't seen too many games yet.

To sum up my thoughts - Wells had a terrible year last year, but not surprisingly, given the number of ways stats get broken down, some of his splits didn't look so bad. It would be more shocking if he did perform evenly in every situation across the board.

Today is the type of game the Jays can expect a lot this year, especially when Tallet is pitching. 3-4 runs in 5-7 innings is what to expect from him.

I second the "please stop posting Halladay updates" - he's gone, and now in the list of players I follow on other teams. But what purpose does it serve on a Jays sight? I also second the "remove him from the banner" request. Lind is a pretty easy choice, or ROmero/Marcum if a pitcher is desired. Maybe a poll?

The Overbay fix is named Brett Wallace, but the fix won't be in for a few months. What else can he do?

My unobservant and baseless theory is that Murphy had Wells playing shallower since he came on board with Cito, and it's burned him over his head. Add to that hammy issues and some memorable almost-catches. It's tough to say how much of his actual skill is lost, though. Some, I don't doubt, but I'm hoping he can get himself back up to a-little-below-average. Whether he is or not (or is even playing any deeper)... *shrug*

I second the "please stop posting Halladay updates"

I personally like the occasional reminders. Not everything this site does is Jays-centric, with the Hall of Names being a popular example. This at least has a distinct Jays relationship. Don't worry, though - I'd imagine the novelty will wane as the season goes on (with some calander-based exceptions, of course, like the Philly series, ASB, and playoffs). As for the banner, I'm with you. I'd guess that when inspiration strikes one of the cabal (there is no cabal) we'll see Romero in his place.

Everyone agrees - it's just that with NFH inactive these days, we're a little short of any kind of graphics capability, never mind actual talent...

Maybe the site needs an update. If the management around here needs to hire someone to do it, I'm sure Bauxites will kick in some dough to do it. Maybe we could get the chat thing going again too.

Sorry, Magpie - I don't mean to cause hassles! As it happens, I have a few Photoshop chops (though not many) - and, as an exercise, I found a picture of Adam Lind and put him in place of Doc:

Adam Lind

(I had to clone stamp Roy's glove out of existence.)

Obviously, Batter's Box can't use this image, as the site doesn't have permission to copy the Lind picture. If someone has a Lind image that is in the public domain, I can bong that one in if you like.

I actually don't mind the RH updates and vote to keep 'em.
