It's been a while since the last Boxcast episode, but it's a while since anything was particularly exciting 'round here. Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLBTR dropped by and we talked about the recent moves, the AL East as it stands, and what it's like to cover the GM Meetings as an internet journalist.

You guys think the Jays are currently the best team in the division on paper? The Yankees are still very good. Even without shoring up the rotation yet (and RF) I still have them ahead of the Jays from a talent perspective; that lineup projects to be amazing until Jeter and ARod decide to decline.

A-Rod and Jeter decided to decline a few years ago actually. Particularly on the defensive side.

That being said I am a believer in the old adage "to be the man you have to beat the man" so I don't think that we are the presumptive favourites at this stage. I do however, think that we are going into this season with a full set of clubs for the first time in 2 decades.

You may notice I said the Yankees lineup looks amazing. Jeter & ARod were still better hitters than Reyes & Lawrie last year, WAR be damned.

Enjoyed the podcast Dave, you should do these more often. I'm sure many Bauxites would be willing to be guests if you can't land big wigs like Mr. Nicholson-Smith.

Nice job, Dave and Ben.

Thanks, enjoyed listening.
Toronto is dangling d'Arnaud, Arencibia and Buck for trade, although from what I've read indicates they'd prefer to move J.P. or Travis. What can they get for each of these guys. Is it enough for a Starter?

The Yankee lineup will probably look better on Opening Day than it does today, but as of today, "amazing" isn't the word that I would use for it.  The Yankees of 1998 had an amazing lineup, with so many great players in their 20s.  The Yankees of 2012 were 2nd in the league in scoring with, and there is a decent chance that they will be 3rd or 4th in 2013 despite playing a favourable hitting environment.  As of today, it looks like the entire lineup save for Brett Gardner will be 30 or older.

Nice job, Dave and Ben.

I consider offenses that finish 2nd, 2nd, 1st, and 1st across MLB in the last 4 years to be amazing. I see no reason not to expect the Yankees to continue that success.

Great job Dave & Ben. Thanks for taking the time to do it.Re the Yankees. Every year they are old. Every year they seem to get older. Every year they seem to be in contention. Maybe one day the wheels will fall off but IMO they are still the team to beat..... but maybe this is the year the wheels fall off..... Orioles almost knocked the hubcaps off last year.

IMO the NYY old stars A Rod, Jeter & Tex are too expensive to move. Canno Is untouchable. Granderson & Gardner can be moved if they can get better replacements.
The above 6 can all contribute to a good offense. They will probably bring back Swisher and/or a good DH. L Berkman. Their guys will continue to wear down the opposing pitcher unless he is an Ace.

For starting pitching they continue to get results from guys that seem past their peak. How? I do not know. Their pen is always very strong. They stack the pen with expensive parts.

Lastly they do not beat themselves. They will not run into stupid outs.

I have given up on seeing them fall apart.
