Pitchers $64.85

Net $125.83

So from that we can see the Jays have ended up with a fairly even split between hitters and pitchers for raw dollars this year.  There is still one hitter needed, and some might not count the 4 injured (OK, 3 hurt 1 likely to be) pitchers but the costs are there regardless.  A bit of a surprise when I saw just how tight the dollars were between the two groups.  Each group has one guy likely to be making over $1 mil in AAA.  There are more relievers I could've listed in the Delabar/Loup/Cecil group but whoever is in those slots will make about the same (close to ML minimum).

All salary figures are from Cot's Contracts while links are going to Baseball Reference.

Thanks John, good work.
I believe any member of a team on the DL at season's end like Drabek. Perez and Hutchison get paid MLB rates, for as long as they are on the DL. So you are right as usual.

Thanks John. Great subject.

I noticed that some of the Miami players have $ paid by the Miami Marlins in the notes column. $3mil for Mark B & J Reyes each.
I wonder how that will be counted.

Yeah, I didn't factor in the $8.5 mil the Jays got in the Miami trade.  Hard to divide out unless clearly stated somewhere.  Cot's just lists it as $8.5 million payment from Miami.  Also I didn't factor in any bonuses or incentives as it seems the Jays accounting goes by when the money goes out the door, plus if they trade a guy they don't get part of the bonus back unless it is via a payment like Miami gave the Jays.

Another note: if you put Lind with the infield then the infield is $29.18 mil and the outfield is $29.2 mil.  So the pitching vs hitting is almost even, and so is the infield vs outfield while 3 catchers are cheaper than a middle reliever who debates retirement.

The killer cost is the rotation at nearly $50 million, or if you prefer our current rotation plus 2 backups ($48.95 mil) makes more than the entire team in 2005 did ($45.7 mil) and is in eyeshot of 2004/2003 (both under $52 mil) and ahead of 2000.

Your info is incredible. Looks like basically a 3 year shot. It also gets much more expensive for year 2 &3.

Arencibia, Lawrie, Lincoln, Rogers, Delabar, Loup, Cecil (forgot Jeffress) will at most be paid $550 K, not $600 K as posted. Conversely, Drabek, Hutchison and Perez will also be paid at most $550 K, not $500 K as posted. That won't change things much. Players on the DL (60-day?) do not count against salary for the time on the DL, as insurance pays the salaries. That might change things. Using $125 MM as an accurate "ballpark" number is fine.

Don't get the $5M for Dickey. Isn't he at $12M or something?

The 5M is the last year on the contract he signed with the Mets. He has a 2/24 extension with the Jays that starts in 2014.

Didn't the Mets exercise Dickey's option at $5.25 MM, because that was the figure A.A. mentioned when discussing the monies changing hands?

Cecil only makes 600k this year?
John Northey - Saturday, January 19 2013 @ 08:37 PM EST (#268124) #
Cecil isn't eligible for arbitration.  Those who do not qualify for arbitration or free agency are paid whatever the team wishes to pay them as long as it is at least the ML minimum.  I just grabbed $600k for those who were on the active roster and $500 for those who would be DL'ed for most of the year so I'd have something to work with.  The real figures probably won't be known until spring training is underway.

Dickey is an odd situation.  According to Cot's his option was for $5 mil but the Mets exercised it for $5.25 mil - why they'd pay an extra quarter million is beyond me.  Perhaps there was an unknown clause for winning the Cy Young that upped his 2013 option - that's all I can figure.  Not a major difference though overall.

I always thought a team should be able to spend up to $75.0 MM on pitching and up to $75.0 MM on hitting.  So as of now, Toronto's just a little bit light.

Good work. As I've been saying since the Melky signing the Jays payroll projects to 117m when you factor in the Miami funds.

I missed the details of Thole's contract when it happened- 2 years at $1.25 with an option for a third at $1.75.  You never know about the effects of a concussion, but Anthopoulos did very well in this negotiation.  It's a bit of a win-win, with the Jays in effect providing concussion consequence insurance and in return getting very reasonably priced upside in the event that Thole returns to pre-concussion level performance.
