I rolled on as the sky grew dark, I put the pedal down to make some time.

The former Fausto Carmona, Roberto Hernandez (1-4, 5.28) throws for Tampa. Lefty J.A. Happ (2-2, 3.98), under the mistaken impression that walking seven batters on Friday gives everyone a free slice of pizza, will try to run down the Rays at 7:10 p.m. Eastern.

Checking B-R it seems the pen should be in good shape with only Oliver and Rogers not available, and Janssen ideally having the night off too.  Loup has had 3 days off, Cecil & Lincoln 2, Delabar one but just 14 pitches over the past 4 days.

For the Rays Gomes and Ramos have 2 days of rest, Farnsworth threw 12 pitches so could do an inning if needed and that is about it.  McGee has been used 2 days in a row and 4 of the past 6.  Peralta 2 days in a row, 4 of past 6.  Rodney 37 pitches yesterday.  Wright 2 days in a row and 5 of past 7.  Sounds like a pen needing a day off, lets hope the Jays don't let that happen :)

Perfect world the Jays take a big early lead, exhaust the Rays pen, and no save rule in place come the 9th.

Why doesn't he just go by Fausto Carmona, like as a stage name? Much better.

It sounds very scary what happened to Happ. the ball was a scorcher and he took it right on the head.  May he be alright . . .

Starting Pitching has issues. Too often, a 3,4,5,6,7 run inning ensues and the Starter puts up zeros before and after. Too often, Toronto scores and the Starter gives it immediately back. The offense is starting to click. Time for the Starters to do likewise.

It was good that Gibbons restrained what seem to be his unthinking platoon moves in the 7th, and kept Lind and Rasmus in the game for later innings. But when Lind came up again in the eighth against a lefthander with one out and runners on first and third, and the winning run on third, the decision to let him hit instead of Davis was simply a brutal one. Indefensible. The predictable double play ended what should have been a multi-run inning.
ComebyDeanChance - Tuesday, May 07 2013 @ 10:41 PM EDT (#271704) #
That's obviously what I hadn't foreseen - the need to have Lind stay in the game to play first. Totally defensible now. Otherwise Rajai would be in right and chaos would reign supreme.

I didn't see the Happ injury? Doesn't that start the Concussion Protocols and 7-day D.L. thing?

Richard, it was ugly. I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up on the 60 day DL.

Janssen sure has been lights out!
superstition be damned but they are finally starting to look a bit better. Still too many mistakes like J.P.'s poor block of the plate, Rasmus overthrowing the cutoff and Boni generally looking lost everywhere but a win is a win and 3 in a row has to be building some confidence.
Super Bluto - Tuesday, May 07 2013 @ 11:10 PM EDT (#271708) #
I'm going to choose to be optimistic re: Happ until I hear otherwise. According to Bautista in the post-game, he never lost consciousness, was alert the whole time, etc. Good signs (especially the 'etc.'). I don't doubt that he misses a few starts, even as a precaution, but speaking as someone who once applied to medical school, I am hopeful.

I do wish the best for him. Another reason for MLB to reconsider padded helmets.

Lind had the walk, but Ramos was generously given the strike call on the 3-0 pitch.

Watching what happened to Happ was downright sickening. There has to be a piece of equipment MLB can mandate to protect these pitchers.

It's pretty ridiculous that Jennings is allowed to advance to third on a live ball in that situation - that ball should be dead.

Lind has faced Price & Lester quite a few times with very bad results, so if he sits tomorrow vs. Moore he's likely getting 3 games on the bench.

Just wanted to thank Brumfield for running down that dream. It never would come to me. I'll go back to working on my mystery, and go wherever it leads.

I looked at Mark Buehrle's stats from Monday:
Innings 1, 2, 4, 5, 6: 5.0, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 3K. Very good pitching.
Inning 3: 1.0, 6H, 7R, 1BB, 2K. Very unfortunate.
We need to figure out what happened in the 3rd, because he gave up two hits and a walk in the 1st and escaped.

Ricky was great in his first 3 innings, but not in the fourth. Between caluses and getting hit by a pitch he needs to be better. He needs to pitch 5.0 or 6.0 or more, because the bullpen can't pitch many innings.

Dickey needs to pitch almost a complete game for the same reason. If he does that he's healthy again. And that's our weak point, A.A.'s mistake.

If Happ is out for any length of time, who gets the call? It's early but our 7th Starter is needed.
John Northey - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 07:34 AM EDT (#271723) #
Actually there is something MLB can do.  There is a helmet for pitchers that I remember reading about last year that various people are pushing for MLB to put into place.  To see it click here.  Can't say for certain, but it appears that helmet might have helped here.  If I was a MLB pitcher after seeing that I'd look into wearing it.

that ball should be dead.

The umpires have the discretion to halt play in precisely that situation. Don't know why they didn't. Maybe they were equally shocked, maybe they forgot about Rule 5.10:

The ball becomes dead when an umpire calls “Time.” The umpire-in-chief shall call “Time”—

That is excellent news.

Gibbons ought to be complimented on his ninja batting order last night.  It is unconventional to place two left-handed hitters in the lineup back-to-back when they easily could be split up, but it was a trap and Maddon fell right in.  Gibbons knew that putting Lind and Rasmus back-to-back in the order would likely attract Jake McGee into the game like a bee to honey.  He also knew that McGee would be off 1 or 2 mph on his fastball because he worked the previous day and that the one thing Lind and Rasmus (even against a lefty) do pretty well is hit 95 mph low fastballs which don't move much.  It worked out just the way Gibbons drew it on the blackboard before.  He even had a little X in the right-centerfield stands where Rasmus' ball went.  He out-Maddoned Maddon.

It seems Happ has bruising and a cut ear. That is about as good as you could expect....no broken bones, no concussion, no internal bleeding.

Good news.

The home plate umpire gave Janssen some VERY generous called strikes. Not that I'm complaining; I thought Arencibia did a surprisingly good job of framing those outside pitches. That called strike three on Jennings looked like it was eight inches off the plate. It's nice to see the Jays catch a break on creative strike zone judgment.
zeppelinkm - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 11:42 AM EDT (#271740) #
Didn't get to watch the whole game, but saw the last couple innings.

On that called strike to Jennings, when he stood there in disbelief, I think it was Morris on the TV broadcast who said something to the effect of "gotta know that's a strike by now, been called one all night long".

Someone else can chime in if that is accurate or not, but creative strike zone or not, if it was consistently called at least then Jennings should have been swinging.

It was the high inside pitch to Johnson (lefty) called strike 1 that I thought was a bit generous myself. Don't see that high strike called often. Was it called all night?
Bid - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 12:49 PM EDT (#271747) #
Morris is correct...that pitch was pretty much a strike all night...to righthanded batters anyway...the up and in one not so much.I did have some sense the umpiring crew was stunned from the Happ injury on (ridiculous they didn't call time) and were perhaps anxious for the safety of the shower..
John Northey - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 12:51 PM EDT (#271748) #
Don't know about all night, but the ump might have called the same pitch earlier with Janssen on the mound...two pitches right on top of each other.  Via Brooks Baseball.  Fun site for checking this stuff.  Three very bad strike calls by the ump with Janssen on the mound, all in Janssen's favour.

Loup and Lincoln never had anything that bad called for them.  Happ had one bad pitch called a strike, but not drastically like Janssen's.   So I'd say the strike zone for Janssen was different.
John Northey - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 12:53 PM EDT (#271749) #
Checking Tampa's I see Roberto Hernandez did have 7 bad strike calls (ie: very clearly balls) with 3 of them looking as bad as the calls for Janssen. One for Jake McGee, and a close but outside one for Ramos.
greenfrog - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 12:56 PM EDT (#271751) #
I watched parts of the last couple of innings. To me it looked as though Lind took ball four (fastball inside), which should have loaded the bases with one out. However, the ump called it a strike and Lind eventually grounded into a DP. It worked out for the Jays in the end, but that could have been a decisive play.
hypobole - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 01:28 PM EDT (#271754) #
The Jays should have a database on Marty Foster (and all umps). They should know what his strike zone is. I'm guessing it doesn't vary much. Both hitters and pitchers should have that info prior to the start of the game. After that, it's execution.
Radster - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 01:51 PM EDT (#271758) #
I think it was Foster who made the brutal call two weeks back, to end the Rays/Rangers game. Didn't see the final outs last night, but hopefully this wasn't a carryover for the past controversy.
