RA Dickey edged out Mark Buehrle and Doug Fister for the pitchers Gold Glove.  The first time a Jays pitcher has won one.

The last Jay to win a Gold Glove was Vernon Wells in 2006.  Dickey also won the Fielding Bible version of a Gold Glove this year.

Other Jays who have won Gold Gloves are:
  • 2B: Roberto Alomar (5 times), Orlando Hudson
  • 3B: Kelly Gruber
  • SS: Tony Fernandez (4 times)
  • OF: Devon White (5 times), Vernon Wells (3 times), Jesse Barfield (twice), and Shawn Green
The link is here for a full list of who won the Gold Gloves this year along with the article about Dickey winning one.

In other news
  • Sanchez, Stroman named to AFL's Fall Stars roster - Not as big a deal as it might seem as 50 players are named to it.
  • Blue Jays extend deal with Double-A New Hampshire - so they will be in NH until at least 2016
  • Plus there are games still going, sadly they involve Boston and St Louis with Boston leading 3 games to 2.
  • In Japan the Yomiuri Giants are playing the Rakuten Golden Eagles for the title with Rakuten leading 2 games to 1.   The Golden Eagles have Andruw Jones on their team (243/391/454) and Casey McGehee (292/376/515) and Brandon Duckworth (4.31 ERA in 87 2/3 IP).  The big guy, Masahiro Tanaka, plays for the Golden Eagles and won game #2 (9 IP, 3 H 1 R/ER 3 BB 12 SO 1 HBP)

Was really expecting Buerhle to win it. Not necessarily because I think he's a better fielder (its a wash really) but just because of the name recognition and the 4 in a row.

I'm just waiting for Dickey's Cy Young next year.

Rakuten Golden Eagles - any affiliation with rakuten.com (aka buy.com)?

Yes, Rakuten owns that team. All of the teams in NPB are owned by companies and the company names are part of the team name. One famous example is Nippon Ham, who own the Fighters, not the Ham Fighters. Yomiuri Giants are basically the Yankees of Japan, so hope Rakuten wins instead.

Cool. How directly is Rakuten (the owner) involved with the running of the team? Steinbrenner level, less than that, or more than that?

Huh. Dickey was the only AL player to win a Gold Glove who doesn't play for the Royals, Orioles or Red Sox. Maybe we can teach R.A. to play second base on his off days? I bet he can hit as well as Izturis...

In all seriousness though, I can kind of see why Dickey won this award instead of Buehrle. Both are phenomenal defenders, but Dickey looks WAY more nonchalant fielding a ball out there. On a hard groundball hit to either of them, there's Buehrle setting himself up in perfect fielding position, glove and chest square to the ground. Dickey meanwhile just stabs at the ball with his glove, like an ice-hockey goaltender catching a slapshot going top-shelf.

Adam Jones was a poor Gold Glove choice.  Rasmus and Ellsbury were both better this year, and have been for years.
