A 5-2 mark for the affiliates Tuesday with one game suspended due to rain. One win was a walk-off.

Columbus 0 Buffalo 0 - Suspended By Rain (Bottom 4th - 1 out)

Buffalo, NY - Liam Hendriks
returned to his dominant ways in Triple-A, shutting out the Indians affiliate on two hits over four frames. He struck out four Clippers and recorded six outs on the ground. The Bisons had two hits in the first three innings - a Darin Mastroianni single and a Dan Johnson double - but did nothing with them. Jared Goeddert drew two walks and will be at first base when the game resumes today.

New Hampshire 5 Portland 1

Portland, ME
- Daniel Norris (1-0) dominated the Red Sox affiliate by whiffing 10 batters over 5.2 innings. He surrendered a run on three hits and three walks. Fellow lefty Tyler Ybarra allowed one of two inherited runners to score on one hit, one walk and one hit by pitch. He struck out a batter over 1.1 frames. Randy Boone and Gregory Infante kept the shutout relief going with two K's apiece in their one-inning stints. Boone walked a batter and plunked another while Infante gave up a hit.

Kenny Wilson began the game with a triple and would score on a Matt Newman ground ball. Newman would go yard to spark a three-run fourth. K.C. Hobson singled home a Jonathan Jones three-bagger and Kevin Nolan drove home another with a sacrifice fly. Jones would single home another run in the fifth. Jones and Wilson had two hits apiece with Wilson drawing a walk. Newman had a walk to reach base twice. Berti, Nolan, Mike Crouse and Derrick Chung also contributed to the hit column. Jorge Flores was 0-for-4.

Daytona 6 Dunedin 5

Daytona Beach, FL -
Dunedin had five one-run innings with the highlights being two RBI singles by Dwight Smith Jr., a run-scoring double by Gustavo Pierre and Marcus Knecht singling home a Dalton Pompey triple. Andy Fermin had a four-hit night and was a homer shy of a cycle. Pierre had a three-hit game while Smith Jr. and Pompey had two hits each. Knecht added a walk to get aboard twice. Christian Lopes singled and walked.

Matt Boyd
struggled through four innings as the Cubs scored three times on six hits and two walks. One of the runs was unearned after an Emilio Guerrero error at short, his 20th of the campaign. Boyd did strike out six and his ERA is still below one at 0.94. Chad Girodo was smacked around for six hits and three walks, leading to two runs (one earned but it was Girodo's error) over three frames. He struck out a pair. Danny Barnes (0-4) gave up a solo homer to Albert Almora and also walked a batter in the eighth.

Lansing 5 West Michigan 4

Lansing, MI -
The Lugnuts first run was a D.J. Davis production. He walked with two outs, stole second, went to third on an errant throw and dashed home on a wild pitch in the third. Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, back-to-back doubles by Matt Dean and Mitch Nay drew Lansing a run closer. Davis singled home the winning run as part of a three-run seventh that also included a Derrick Loveless RBI fielder's choice. Justin Atkinson added a double and Dickie Joe Thon had a base hit.

Shane Dawson
was victimized by a two-run homer among his two runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. Davis prevented another run from appearing on Dawson's line by throwing out a runner at home plate as part of an 8-2 double play. The Albertan lefty struck out four and induced a trio of groundouts. Roberto Espinosa stranded two runners but wound up getting charged with a run of his own on a hit and two walks. He did strike out a pair in his 1.2 innings. Scott Silverstein (7-3) surrendered one run on one hit and one walk in 1.1 frames while striking out one. Phil Kish stranded two runners by striking out a batter in his two-thirds of an inning. Griffin Murphy struck out one of the three batters he retired for his 13th save.

Vancouver 3 Hillsboro 0

Francisco Gracesqui
was the winning pitcher in Tuesday's victory in Hillsboro.

Hillsboro, OR -
The first run of the game came in the third when Jonathan Davis doubled and he eventually scored on a throwing error. Michael De La Cruz drove home two insurance runs with a triple in the seventh. Ryan Metzler had two singles and a base on balls. De La Cruz walked and Alexis Maldonado also got aboard twice with a hit and a walk. Ryan McBroom had a double. Roemon Fields was 0-for-5 but stole his 10th base. Franklin Barreto was 0-for-4.

Justin Shafer
pitched 3.2 innings and allowed just two hits while striking out five. Francisco Gracesqui (1-0) stranded a runner for Shafer and pitched 1.1 innings of one-hit ball with two K's. Daniel Lietz put up two goose eggs with three walks and two strikeouts. Jose Fernandez finished up strong with two innings of one-hit relief, whiffing five.

Kingsport 6 Bluefield 5

Kingsport, TN
- The Jays got a 3-0 jump on the Mets in the first due in part to a Rowdy Tellez sacrifice fly and a Gabriel Cenas double. Cenas doubled home another run in the third and Rolando Segovia plated a run in the ninth on a sac fly. Cenas and Josh Almonte had the two-hit efforts while Tellez walked twice. Richard Urena was 1-for-4.

Jesus Tinoco kept the Mets at two runs despite seven hits and two walks over four frames. He struck out one but five of his eight outs were on the ground. Dusty Isaacs allowed a run on two hits over 2.2 innings but struck out six. Conor Fisk allowed two more runs on two hits and two walks but struck out three in 1.2 innings. Chase Wellbrook (0-1) struck out a batter but coughed up the winning run on two hits.

GCL Blue Jays 6 GCL Pirates 3

Dunedin, FL
- Matt Morgan slammed a three-run home walk with two outs in the ninth inning for a walk-off victory. That came after the Jays built a 3-0 lead by the fifth inning on an RBI doubles by Deiferson Barreto and Juan Kelly and a run-scoring single by Lane Thomas. Yeltsin Gudino joined Kelly and Thomas in the two-hit parade. Morgan had two walks to add to his dinger and Kelly was hit by a pitch to reach base thrice. Thomas stole his second base of the year.

Evan Smith
was in line for the win after six strong innings in which he kept the Bucs to a single run on four hits. His K and groundout totals were seven apiece. Daniel Rodriguez surrendered the tying runs in 2.1 innings on five hits (including a solo homer) and two walks but Joe Claver (1-0) survived a walk and stranded a runner in his 2/3 of an inning. Rodriguez and Claver each had a strikeout.

DSL Blue Jays 4 DSL Astros Orange 2

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
- The Jays did all their scoring in the third and fourth innings. Rodrigo Orozco drove in the first two runs with a single. Jesus Severino and Miguel Almonte singled home the others. Orozco, Almonte and Enmanuel Moreta had two hits apiece. Bryan Lizardo reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Eddy Alcantara singled and walked. Javier Hernandez doubled.

Denis Diaz (2-1) threw five no-hit innings with just an unearned run on his pitching line. He walked three and struck out five. Luis Sanchez got the four-inning save, giving up a run on three hits while whiffing two.

This was mentioned in the other minor league thread, but I really wonder whether the way that Norris is pitching is such that he could realistically contribute to the big league club this year? AA is notoriously conservative with promoting minor league pitchers, but I wonder whether he would be tempted to really see what Norris can handle. If nothing else, it would allow AA to be able to make a bit more of an informed decision about trading him or not. If you promote him to AAA and he still dominates, there's no way you trade him at that point.
John Northey - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 07:47 AM EDT (#288926) #
Before we promote him I think more than 11 innings in AA is needed.  Norris' first AA start was 4 runs in 5 2/3 IP due to 2 home runs given up.  His first game also saw 1 ground out vs 11 fly outs.  His night last night was a 'wow' game but lets see a couple more in AA (min 5 starts) then a few in AAA (again, 5+ starts) before he gets a September call-up.  Ideally you leave him in the minors all year (not on 40 man yet, will he need to be for 2015?) and he starts 2015 as the first guy called up when a starter goes down.

Remember, hutchison was promoted to the bigs at age 21 after 6 AA starts and 45 milb starts, and held his own right away.

Norris is 21 with 2 AA starts and 48 milb starts.

Hutch was more consistently dominant in milb, without the yips norris had in his first year and a half.....but norris has matched what hutCh did in A+ and AA.

Hutchison may not be the best comparison, as he had a ridiculously advanced feel for pitching; I get the impression Norris still gets by on having tremendous stuff. (He's obviously made huge strides in his approach this year.)

That said - and this is some counting of eggs before they hatch - I could see the Jays bringing Norris up to pitch out of the pen in late August, assuming he continues to dominate for the next two months.

AA was in Portland last night to see Norris pitch.
soupman - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 10:56 AM EDT (#288938) #
let's say norris continues to pitch very well in aa up to the trade deadline...the right move might be to hold on to him and bring him up like the cards did with miller and rosenthal. especially if the potential trade they're making is for another SP and might (read: probably) would include other pieces.

it will be interesting to see what the team does in the next month or so. i think i'm like a lot of people now in saying that i'm of two minds on whether they should 'go all-in' now or stick with the ones that brought them here, and hold on to the prospects.

Concur.  Well said.

If you want to dream, your playoff rotation might be Stroman, Buehrle, Hutchison, Dickey (please feel free to rearrange order if you wish).  Your bullpen might be Janssen, McGowan, Santos from the right and Cecil, Loup, Norris  from the left and one of Happ/Redmond.  It's obviously not as exciting as having Cliff Lee, but it works for me.

If there's a realistic chance that D-No can contribute to the big club in 2015, then it would be ridiculous to trade him for a 2014-15 pure rental like Price or Shark. The Bautista-EE "window" doesn't close until after 2016.
China fan - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 11:31 AM EDT (#288942) #
"....AA was in Portland last night to see Norris pitch...."

But not specifically for Norris.  Apparently he's on a major tour of all the Jays minor-league affiliates.  He watched a Dunedin game, a couple days ago, when Cole was pitching, if I recall correctly.
John Northey - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 11:40 AM EDT (#288943) #
Odds are AA is timing it to hit certain pitchers though.  With the interest in Norris via trade and potential for an early call-up (it isn't unheard of for guys to go AA to majors as some have pointed out) then it is just smart for AA to try to see a start of his.

D-No

Too much like a Bond villain.  I prefer Dan-No.  We can all shout "Book him, Dan-no" after he strikes out another...

You can see Norris' 10th K if you toggle through the videos on milb.com. Not the best angle though. The announcers said his fastball was at 93 prior to Norris striking the batter out on a change-up.
soupman - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 11:48 AM EDT (#288947) #
Shark/Price aren't pure rentals though because they're under control for 2015 as well.

If it's 2014/2015 or bust, then maybe you sell the farm now and hope that the crop of prospects behind the guys you give up are the ones that turn into the core of the future.

There are straight up rentals that may be interesting, and it will be interesting to see what the price is for them.

The package the Red Sox put together for Peavy last year is probably what I'd rather see the Jays do to improve this year. They parted with 2 glove-first SS, and 2 high-upside arms that are only putting together great seasons this year. They didn't give up JBJ, Owens, Xander B., Swihart, or anyone that you would expect everyone else was clamoring for. Seems like it worked out well for them (not counting the season so far).
uglyone - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 11:55 AM EDT (#288949) #
Ryan i agree that hutch might not be a great comp for the reasons you said....then again, i don't know norris well enough to say its a bad comp, either.

And then hutch isn't the only recent jay example either...,

Alvarez (21): 14 starts in AA, 71 starts milb
Litsch (22): 22 starts in AA, 2 in AAA, 39 starts milb
Rzep (23): 14 in AA, 2 in AAA, 45 in milb

And looking closer, the reason litsch and zep weren't up earlier was likely due to mediocre performance, not inexperience, while with hutch and alvarz they dominated AA right off the bat. As soon as litsch and rzep started dominating AA they got moved up without much waiting around.

Can't say anything for sure but i wouldn't expect too much hesitation in promoting Norris IF he's dominating AA like it looks like he may be able to.

D Norris does not seem to get past the 6th inning often. He too may be on an innings limit.
Also will he find major league hitters different to what he is used to?
John Northey - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 01:38 PM EDT (#288956) #
I'm getting the impression the Jays don't go by inning limits anymore but some other method to tell when to shut a guy down.  I'm glad if they are as raw innings isn't the best measure, especially if you want to maximize value out of a pitcher.

The general thinking is to watch velocity, arm slot, control.  If any of the 3 start to waiver then you need to look at pulling a pitcher from a game.  I'd think watching when a pitcher starts to lose any of those 3 would also be an indicator of when to shut him down - ie: if his arm slot drops after 100 pitches for awhile, then starts to drop after 90 you know you are hitting a wall with him and if it drops to, say, 70 pitches then that is it time to shut him down (just random numbers there really...there should be a smart way to figure out limits).  Heck, maybe if you watch those 3 factors closely enough you could keep a guy going all year, just reducing the pitch count each time until it got too low to be worth using him.

The saying is that pitchers have a finite number of pitches in their arm and you want as many of those in the majors as possible.  If Norris is ready after 5 or so starts in AA then so be it, call him up and make use of him.  Some pitchers have enough for 25 years (Nolan Ryan) some just last until age 25 (Litsch out of baseball after age 26 season, but not effective after age 23 as an example).
whiterasta80 - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 01:42 PM EDT (#288957) #
Agreed bpoz, I want to see Norris going through a lineup 3 and 4 times (regardless of level) before I bring him up to the majors.

Beyond stretching him out, I don't see what benefit there is in Norris going through the order an additional time. It is not like he is a control pitcher relying on location and deception to get by. With 95K/22BB and 57H in 77.2 innings is there really a concern that teams will suddenly figure him out the next time through the order?
tecumseh18 - Wednesday, June 25 2014 @ 02:58 PM EDT (#288963) #
Shark/Price aren't pure rentals though because they're under control for 2015 as well.

I call them "pure" rentals because there is virtually zero chance that AA would extend them, or that they would agree to be extended. Of course, all bets are off if that's not the case.

It's obviously nicer that their contracts extend to 2015, but if, uh, "Dan-No" can step in as an effective starter at some point next year, then that reduces the value of stripping the system to trade for one or the other. Not to mention the big salary bump that would make it harder to retain Cabrera and/or Rasmus.

I was not much of Norris proponent when he was drafted. Didn't really like the arm action and didn't seem to project long term velocity wise. I gather he's not pitching in the mid-90s as was projected at the time of the draft and is working in the low 90s and having success. Moreover, he's toned down the delivery and seems to be repeating with much more consistency allowing him to throw more pitches for strikes. Norris was always very athletic so count on him developing his pitches further. Good to see a kid in the farm system figure it out. We've had too many prospects bomb out despite the system being loaded with tools. I hope he pushes on and we get to see some starts at the big league level.

Aaron Sanchez was a little better last night- 4.1IP, 3H, 1R, 4W, 7K.  He threw 87 pitches.  So far, he's had 12 walks in 13 innings in the IL.  Adron Chambers delivered a key homer and Kevin Pillar went 2-3 including a double.  Notably, he did not take the full alloted time to report.

I think far too much was made over Pillar's bat toss. It didn't necessarily mean that he was selfish i.e. how dare you take me out of the line-up. It probably meant he was frustrated at not being given a chance to help the team or frustrated that so far his own performance had not justified being given an opportunity. He did not bark at Gibbons or threaten to fight him and he did not throw the bat anywhere near anyone else. He was venting which is healthy and virtually every baseball player does it.
Who can forget David Wells' tossing the baseball over the right field fence at Exhibition stadium when the manager dared to take him out of the game? Pillar didn't toss the bat over the fence or into the stands as Encarnacion regularly does (joke intended). If getting frustrated gets a person a trip to Buffalo, the Bisons' locker room is going to get mighty crowded.
China fan - Thursday, June 26 2014 @ 06:10 PM EDT (#289041) #
The Pillar incident wasn't simply a question of what he did with the bat.  It also seemed to be a verbal clash between the player and his manager, in the dugout, in front of his teammates. Without knowing what Pillar said to Gibbons during his glove toss (which followed the bat toss), it's very hard for us to judge Pillar's conduct.  But the Jays beat reporters have noted that Gibbons is normally very diplomatic about these kinds of incidents, and he was uncharacteristically blunt about Pillar's behavior this time.  He used the word "selfish" and clearly implied that Pillar's behavior was selfish.  I doubt he would have been so blunt and critical of Pillar if it was simply a matter of the bat toss.  It was more likely a matter of the words that Pillar used -- words that may have been an implicit challenge to Gibbons' authority.  Gibbons  can't allow a young player in the dugout to be questioning the manager's decisions in front of the rest of the team.  That's probably why Pillar was demoted.
China fan - Thursday, June 26 2014 @ 06:12 PM EDT (#289042) #
The video clip, by the way, clearly shows Pillar saying words to Gibbons while Pillar was angrily removing his batting gloves and tossing them over to the dugout wall.
