Daniel Norris continued his sensational season and Roberto Osuna had his most impressive start off TJ. Several prospects made their debuts tonight at new levels as the affiliates went 4-3.

Scranton W/B 1 Buffalo 5

My word Daniel Norris is something else. Nine more strikeouts tonight over a tidy five innings of work. Norris threw 48 strikes over his 79 pitches. His only hit allowed was a solo homerun. Dalton Pompey made his AAA debut and singled in four plate appearances. Anthony Gose had one of those nights fans have dreamt of him having at the big league level one day. He stole four bases, broke up a double play, and scored on a passed ball. Other notables include Ryan Goins who doubled twice.

New Hampshire 0 Trenton 3

Not enough offence to support starter Scott Copeland, who pitched six innings of three run baseball. The Fisher Cats collected just four hits, one of which was by newcomer Gus Pierre. Trenton starter Jaron Long had a perfect game into the sixth inning.

Lakeland 0 Dunedin 1

L.B. Dantzler drove in Emilio Guerrero in the tenth inning as the Dunedin squad snuck by the Tigers’ affiliate. Tonight was also Roberto Osuna’s best start coming off TJ. He pitched four innings of shutout baseball, striking out five while allowing just three hits.

South Bend 2 Lansing 0

Jeremy Gabryszwski was tagged with the five inning complete game loss in tonight’s rain shortened game. Gabryszwski allowed just two earned runs on six hits, striking out three in the process. Five innings was not enough for Lansing as they failed to must much offence. Recently promoted Rowdy Tellez collected a hit in two plate appearances.

Boise 7 Vancouver 5

Blame Vancouver for the lateness of this MLU. Vancouver played well into the night eventually falling to a two-run double in the 13th. Alberto Tirado tallied seven strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings of work. That’s pretty electric. Franklin Barreto had two hits. Richard Urena went hitless on his Vancouver debut.

Kingsport v Bluefield POSTPONED RAIN

GCL Yankees2 2 GCL Blue Jays 8

Let’s get a scouting report on Angel Perdomo. He’s 20 in the GCL, sure. But, he’s also 6’6 from the left side with some nice numbers. Tonight he pitched four shutout innings and struck out six. Deiferson Barreto hit his way aboard three times, including a homerun. While Juan Kelly and Yeltsin Gudino hit their way aboard twice.

According to John Lott, apparently Daniel Norris is starting again this coming Tuesday.

Hmmmm......

Norris is at 118 2/3 IP.  In his ML career before 2014 he had thrown 133 1/3 IP (2 seasons).  No idea how much he threw each year in instructional ball in the fall or in extended spring training.  The Jays also are talking about ignoring the inning limits which might be due to the lack of results - guys seem to get hurt with or without inning limits so maybe they are trying something different.  A better way (based on what I've read) is to watch for changes in velocity and/or arm slot and/or stride.  If those are consistent then there is no need to end a pitchers season (or pull him from a game).  That would explain old time pitchers throwing 250 to 300+ innings a season for years.  Stieb is always a favorite of mine, just 128 minor league innings total as a pro then in the majors to stay with an extremely heavy workload and he didn't really break down until age 33.

Norris seems to just be getting stronger.  Limited to 5 or 6 innings, but what a 5 or 6 innings.  Having him start the last game in Buffalo is smart for attendance/playoff reasons down there.  I'd be looking at giving him starts up here after that or tell him 'today you are in the game for the 7th inning' or something once he comes up (as it seems inevitable now).  Unless something starts to go wrong I'd say give him a shot and see what you got.  We've seen teams go coo-coo over inning and pitch counts without reward (Joba rules didn't work, Strasburg they did everything possible and he still got hurt for most of a season to name two high profile cases).  Lets see what happens if you try to watch for when a pitcher is losing control instead of sticking to a randomly picked number (30% increase in innings or whatever it is).

Sam - scouting report on perdomo sounds tantalizing. Legut mid 90s heat with potential plus curve and plus change. Command is a question mark, though.
