The Lansing Lugnut Lumber Company provided the majority of the highlights as the affiliates won two of out six Tuesday night.
Lehigh Valley 3 Buffalo 1 (Game 1 - 9 Innings)
Allentown, PA - The game started with the Bisons staring at a two-run deficit and that is how it ended. Yesterday, the Phillies affiliate got to Felix Doubront (0-3, 2.65) for two runs on three hits and two walks in three innings with a trio of stolen bases factoring in. He struck out four for a Game Score of 47. Andrew Albers "started" today's proceedings and gave up a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Canadian lefty went 4-1/3 innings and scattered six hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. His strikeout, groundout and flyout totals were three apiece. Albers started a 1-4-2 double play that cut down a runner at the plate. Gregory Infante stranded a runner for Albers and struck out one in two-thirds of a perfect frame.
Steve Tolleson drove in the only Buffalo run with a single to score Jonathan Diaz in the sixth inning. Diaz had a perfect day at the dish with a single and two walks. Caleb Gindl and Alex Hassan also had base hits. Matt Hague had a base on balls. Ramon Santiago was 0-for-4 as the DH. Daric Barton and Sean Ochinko were both 0-for-3.
Buffalo 3 Lehigh Valley 1 (Game 2 - 7 Innings)
Allentown, PA - Game 2 was a complete role-reversal from Game 1 as the visitors scored the first three runs of the game before the home team answered. Matt Hague had the game-winning RBI in the third inning before an error produced a second run in the frame. A double play ball off the bat of Ramon Santiago in the second produced the first run. Hague had a 3-for-4 night while Munenori Kawasaki had the only extra-base hit with a double. Santiago, Caleb Gindl, Andy Burns and Josh Thole put one in the hit column. Steve Tolleson and Jonathan Diaz heard ball four once. Luke Scott struck out twice and went 0-for-4.
Jeff Francis (2-0, 2.67) was shakin' down the bacon with six innings of one-run ball on three hits. He racked up five strikeouts with zero walks for a Game Score of 67. Five of his nine outs in play were on the grass. Bobby Korecky worked a one-hit seventh for his third save.
Erie 6 New Hampshire 3
Erie, PA - This game was tied at 3-3 before the Tigers affiliate pounced on the Fisher Cats for three runs in the eighth inning. A pair of throwing errors by Danny Barnes (2-2) on bunted balls led to all three runs being unearned. Barnes gave up three hits and a walk over two frames. Taylor Cole put in six innings of three-run ball for a quality start. An error by shortstop Jorge Flores resulted in an unearned run on Cole's line that included eight hits allowed, including a solo home run. He struck out four and walked nobody for a Game Score of 50.
New Hampshire enjoyed a brief 3-2 lead thanks to a swing of the bat from Ryan Schimpf, who connected for a three-run homer in the fourth to score a Jon Berti single and a K.C. Hobson walk. Dalton Pompey had the other two Fisher Cat hits but he was thrown out at second base trying to stretch his base hit into a double before Schimpf's homer. Schimpf drew a walk and Berti was hit by a pitch to reach base twice. Devon Travis and Jack Murphy were hitless in their four at-bats. The trio of Dwight Smith Jr., Jorge Flores and Matt Newman all went 0-for-3.
Palm Beach 6 Dunedin 1
Palm Beach, FL - Dunedin snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the sixth inning but the Cardinals stormed back with three runs against Jeff Hoffman (1-2, 4.40) in their half of the sixth for the win. Hoffman started off well by retiring the first five hitters in a row and permitting just one hit through two innings. He had to dodge trouble in the third, fourth and fifth in the form of a two-walk inning and a pair of two-hit innings. However, four singles and a sacrifice fly led to three runs in the sixth. In total, the Cardinals had nine hits and three walks in 5-2/3 innings against Hoffman, who struck out one for a Game Score of 37. Six of his nine outs in play were of the infield variety. Phil Kish stranded both of Hoffman's runners and pitched 1-1/3 innings of one-hit ball. Matt Smoral surrendered the other three runs on two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch while getting one out. Chris Schaeffer walked a batter and plunked another, permitting one of two inherited runners to cross home plate before getting the final two outs of the frame.
J.D. Davis singled home a Martin Mendoza base hit to give the Jays a short-lived 1-0 lead in the sixth. The Jays had a bases-loaded, one-out situation but Matt Dean hit into an inning-ending double play. Roemon Fields had the lone two-hit game while Davis and L.B. Dantzler also reached twice with a single and a walk. Dean, Mitch Nay and Dawel Lugo had the other Dunedin hits with Lugo taking one for the team. Christian Lopes was 0-for-4 and Ian Parmley was 0-for-3.
Lansing 13 Bowling Green 3
Lansing, MI - The Lugnuts struck early and late to cool off the Rays affiliate after a 17-hit attack. Doubles by Anthony Alford and Ryan McBroom opened the scoring in the first inning. Chris Carlson tripled in a run and he was brought home on an Alford base hit in the second. After a three-inning break, Lansing resumed the whupping in the sixth when Carlson connected for a solo home run. Alford tripled home a run and came in to score on a Richard Urena homer. Jason Leblebijian belted a solo shot in the seventh and a two-run dinger in the eighth. In between, Rowdy Tellez tallied a two-run single in the eighth and McBroom had an RBI fielder's choice as part of the five-run eighth. Carlson and Alford were both 4-for-5 and were a double and a homer away respectively from the cycle. Leblebijian had three hits and Josh Almonte had two. Urena and Tellez both drew walks to get on base a couple of times. Tim Locastro doubled and took one for the team. Mike Reeves did not have a hit but he did get a walk.
Starlyn Suriel (5-3, 2.60) spun six shutout innings by scattering six hits and a walk. He struck out one for a Game Score of 60 and split his 16 outs in play evenly on the ground and in the air. Dusty Isaacs was dinged for all three runs on four hits and an walk in his two innings of work. One of the runs was unearned after a Urena error at short but Isaacs did whiff one. Carlos Ramirez walked one and whiffed one in a shutout ninth.
DSL Diamondbacks 10 DSL Blue Jays 9
San Pedro de Macoris, DR - The Jays nearly came all the way but their four-run ninth inning was a run short. Yonardo Herdenez took the loss to fall to 1-1 after yielding six runs (four earned) over 2-1/3 innings. Both teams made three errors.
Jesus Severino and Norberto Obeso led the way with a hit and two walks apiece. Yorman Rodriguez doubled and drove in three runs. Sam Buelens was 1-for-1 with two stolen bases. Christian Peguero tripled and stole a base. Jesus Navarro singled, walked and collected an RBI. Kevin Vicuna was 0-for-5 but managed to knock in a run.
