Vancouver had a tough loss. They were leading 2-0 in the eighth with two runners on and two outs. Manuel Beltre, playing third base, made an error that let a run in. The next two hitters singled and suddenly the C's were losing 3-2. The starter was Austin Cates. Cates made his fourth start on Saturday. In those four starts he has given up the following earned runs: 3, 2, 1, 0. He has lowered his ERA to 2.89 and he has 20 K's in 18.2 innings. He had five shutout innings in this game. It is always good to see in season improvement.
The C's had ten hits, Dub Gleed doubled twice. JR Freethy also had two hits.
Brandon Barriera started for Dunedin and pitched two innings. I assume that he just went two innings because he had thrown 52 pitches. Barriera did throw 62 pitches last time out but he might have been pulled because he had two heavy load innings of 25 and 27 pitches. The heavy load was due in part to foul balls, he had 14 in total. He also had seven whiffs. Barriera mixed three pitches fairly equally with his fastball averaging 94.6 mph.
The hardest thrower in the game was Brayden Heidel who also was hit around for six runs.
The D Jays had four hits and made four errors. A low A special. Jojo Parker had a hit, Blaine Bullard and Juan Sanchez just walked, once each.
Here is a note from the D Jays on social media: Per Statcast, Reece Wissinger’s four-seam fastball averages 20.8 inches of induced vertical break, which would rank second-best in MLB, and grades as a 99th percentile pitch. After changing his arm angle in JUCO, Wissinger has been up to 95 MPH as a pro.
Wissinger went undrafted last year and currently has a 4.70 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in five games out of the Dunedin bullpen.
