The Vancouver Canadians swept the Northwest League Championship series on Friday, 3-0, beating the Eugene Emeralds 9-8 in 12 innings.
Vancouver finished last in the first half of the Northwest League season with a 27-39 record but rebounded nicely in the second, flipping that record to 37-29.
Austin Smith’s solo home run got Vancouver on the board on Friday in the top of the second, but the Emeralds promptly answered with two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth inning saw the C’s get two more runs in their half thanks to a Dameury Pena double that scored Austin Smith and then a Jaxson West sacrifice fly that scored Pena. Pena had moved from second to third on a walk and a sacrifice bunt.
Eugene got back-to-back doubles in their half of the fourth to knot the score at three, and it would stay that way until the seventh.
Eugene would send all nine batters to the plate in the seventh, scoring four on two hits and four walks. The Emeralds looked to have the game all but wrapped up at 7-3.
Vancouver would then rally, scoring a single run in the eighth and three in the ninth to cap off a remarkable comeback to tie the game and head to extra innings. David Calabrese’s two-run blast with two outs in the bottom of the ninth tied the game at 7-7.
The teams traded runs in the 10th inning, and it was in the 12th that Vancouver would score the only run as a Ryan Sprock single scored the extra-innings runner from second.
Jack Eshleman, in his fourth inning of work, struck out two batters despite the tying run being moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and that helped win the Championship for Vancouver.
Carter Cunningham’s walk-off two-run home run gave the New Hampshire Fisher Cats a 2-1 win in 10 innings on Friday.
The Fisher Cats were held scoreless until the bottom of the tenth.
Nolan Perry and the Fisher Cats pitching staff allowed just one run, with Perry throwing four innings of scoreless baseball. He had six strikeouts.
New Hampshire and Harrisburg play again today starting at 6:03 PM ET. Fernando Perez (0-1, 7.41 ERA) will start for the Fisher Cats.
Davis Schneider’s solo home run was the lone run for the Buffalo Bisons in their 2-1 loss to the Charlotte Knights on Friday.
CJ Van Eyk surrendered a two-run home run in the second and then promptly retired eight Charlotte hitters, but the damage had already been done. Van Eyk went six total innings, notching four strikeouts and allowing four hits, including the homer.
Buffalo has lost 11 of their last 15 games.
Buffalo and Charlotte play a doubleheader today, with the first game at 6:45 pm ET. Richard Gallardo will start the first game for Buffalo, and RHP Grant Rogers will start game two.
