A cornered Moscow Rat fought off the Toronto Walrus for a victory, but the 6-5-1 margin couldn’t propel him any higher in the standings. The Rats remain outside the consolation bracket, hungrily eyeing the Shore Birds and Magicians just ahead of him. The Walrus still holds first but lost ground on his three closest opponents, all of whom had decisive victories.

In the other notable matchups previewed in last week’s post, Mebion Glyndwyr claimed second place for himself with a 9-3 win over Baird Brain, who remains 10th despite the defeat. The Red Mosquitoes and Horse Field Hammers fought to a virtual draw, but the Hammers gained one slot in the standings. Hannibal’s Cannibals were down 12-0 to the Austin Senators at midweek but eked out a 6-5-1 victory and maintain the final spot in the championship bracket.

The teams in the championship and consolation brackets did not change during the week, but the Walrus now holds a mere 3.5-game lead over Mebion with AGF only 4.5 games back. Just as taut is the battle to avoid relegation, as the Thunderbirds propelled themselves into the clear for the moment with a 7-4-1 victory while his competitors faltered. Four teams are within 7.5 games of the The Jicks Rays clinched relegation to Barfield after being mauled by a Gorilla.

This week, the only matchup against high-ranking teams involves #2 Mebion Glyndwyr and #6 Hannibal’s Cannibals. In fact, most of the matchups for the final two weeks involve upper division vs. lower division teams.

In the Barfield Division, Slippery Pete will advance to Alomar in 2005 barring an amazing collapse and an equally amazing end-run by the Decepticons or Simpsons. Pete plays the 4th-place Decepticons in this week’s marquee matchup, and just 2.5 wins will guaranteee advancement. Unfortunately for the Decepticons, their hopes for advancement depend on a victory against the division’s runaway leader.

The 2nd-place Ghost Man On Third play the 14th-place Anarchist Activists, who are 2.5 games out of the consolation bracket. Third-place Good Sports face off against the 10th-place Vancouver Cyphers, who hope for a big win that would move them within reach of the championship bracket.
