We continue a Battersbox tradition with a story.
High school history classes with Mr. Bull were unexciting to say the least. We would memorize a long list of dates of wars and transfers of power in 16th and 17th century Europe. For distraction, we would watch Mr. Bull's glass eye.
One Remembrance Day, Mr. Bull told us how he had been a teacher in Windsor in the 1950s and smuggled in copies of "The Communist Manifesto" into Detroit during the McCarthy era. "I disagreed with every word of it, but I thought that students should have a chance to read it", Mr. Bull stated flatly. And then, even drier "I thought that was why we fought". I've long since forgotten the details of European history, but Mr. Bull's story remains firm in my memory. He passed away last November.
