Sad Songs Say So Much (About a Pitcher)

The farm affiliates received some solid pitching performances, but on this night it was not enough.  A lack of offensive support and untimely errors followed by poor "clutch" pitching led to a 1-3 record.

Syracuse 0 @ Rochester 5

The Chiefs managed only six singles, two by Adam Lind, and a walk in an upstate New York tilt last night. Casey Janssen started for Syracuse and went 4.2 innings. The Red Wings tagged him for 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts. Jordan DeJong finished up. Russ Adams went 0-4 including 3 strikeouts.

New Hampshire 2 @ Portland 4

Sometimes it's the little things that get you. Take Ricky Romero. His superficial line was quite nice- 7 innings, 1 earned run on 5 hits and 1 walk with 6 strikeouts. He did not give up any longballs. On the other hand, a walk, a stolen base, a Romero error and a sacrifice fly led to an early run; in the sixth inning with the score tied at 1, Romero did not respond well to a leadoff two base error by Danny Solano and surrendered a triple, a double and a single afterward and that was the ballgame. Still, after Romero's more profound struggles at double A, this start has to go in the "progress" column. Manny Mayorson doubled twice while Tony Miller singled twice to lead the Fisher Cat offence.

Vero Beach @ Dunedin, ppd. rain

Southwest Michigan 0 @ Lansing 9

Jacob Butler's 2 run first inning homer got the Lugnuts in gear, and that was all Adrian Martin and 2 relievers needed. Martin went 5 shutout innings, surrendering 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6. Po-Hsuan Keng and Josh Sowers followed with 2 innings of 1 hit ball each. The 'Nuts broke it open scoring 4 runs in the sixth inning. Anthony Garibaldi's 2 run homer was the big blow of the inning. Butler went 2-3 with a walk and scored 3 runs, while Luke Hetherington did an admirable job leading off by reaching base 3 times in 4 tries. Joey Metropoulos drove in 2 runs with a single, and Brian Pettway doubled in another.

Auburn, scheduled day off for NYPL All-Star game

Bluefield 4 @ Pulaski 3, 11 innings

That one hurt. After the Orioles scored 2 in the third inning, the P-Jays rallied for 3 in the 4th inning highlighted by Travis Snider's 11th homer, a 2 run shot.  It stayed that way until the eighth inning when the leadoff Oriole hitter reached on a passed ball on a strikeout.  Two singles followed and the game went to extras.  In the 11th inning, the leadoff Oriole hitter reached on an error.  Pitcher Nathan Starner was perhaps unnerved and threw wildly on an attempted pickoff and the runner came all the way around to score.  Starner then struck out the side, but it was too little, too late. Matt Ginley threw 5 innings of relief and struck out 10.
