Striking First

After tonight’s loss I don’t have the energy to write anything too detailed. Instead, I’ll prove short summaries of each game and then highlight three notable performers for each team. These performances are usually good, but occasionally are notable for other reasons. Tonight, the Blue Jays resolved to strike first, even with runs from the other team imminent, so we’ll see how their affected their results.

Syracuse 6 @ Toledo 5 - Box Score

Victor Zambrano’s rehab is not progressing well, as he finished today’s appearance with a WHIP over 2, which includes a walk an inning and more than a hit allowed per inning. A trio of relievers pitched the final four innings and protected Syracuse’s lead. Five Chiefs had two hits and the team hit around Roman Colon in the middle of the sixth to gain a 6-5 lead, which would hold up.

Notable Performers

Chad Mottola, RF, 2-5, 2 R, HR, RBI

Mike Vento, LF, 2-4, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI

John Hattig, 3B, 2-4, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI

New Hampshire 8 @ Erie 4 - Box Score

Jesse Litsch really struggled in his second start back at double-A. He allowed over two hits an inning, walked two more and was lucky to only give up four runs in 5.1 frames. However, New Hampshire had struck first with six in the first and never looked back, cruising to an 8-4 victory. Every starter but Dustin Majewski had a hit for the Fisher Cats and all, including Majewski, reached base during a plate appearance.

Notable Performers

Rob Cosby, 3B, 1-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB

Chip Cannon, 1B, 2-5, R, 2B, RBI

Jesse Litsch, SP, 5.1 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Jupiter 1 @ Dunedin 0 - Box Score

unedin managed three hits and three walks against Jesus Silva over six innings. If the team thought getting to the bullpen would give them a reprieve they were wrong, as Dunedin didn’t get a single baserunner over the last 1/3 of the game. AJ Wideman gave up seven hits over seven innings, but unfortunately three occurred in the third as a single, double and single for the Hammerheads scored the only run of the game.

Notable Performers

Kyle Phillips, DH, 1-3, BB

Eric Nielsen, RF, 1-3, BB

AJ Wideman, SP, 7 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

South Bend 5 @ Lansing 8 - Box Score

South Bend scored four in the first before starter Graham Godfrey settled down and completed 6 innings with five runs against. Meanwhile, Lansing struck for five in the second, driving South Bend’s Jordan Norberto from the game. They added three more runs over the next six frames and Godfrey soldiered forward and held the lead, before turning it over to the bullpen for three shutout innings and a victory.

Notable Performers

Brian Pettway, LF, 3-3, 2 R, 3B, BB

Jonathan Diaz, SS, 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI

Graham Godfrey, SP, 6 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

3 star selection

3rd star – Mike Vento, 2-4, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 6 TB

2nd star – AJ Wideman, 7 IP, 7 H, ER, 1 BB, 4 K

1st star – Brian Pettway, 3-3, 2 R, 3B, BB, 5 TB
