Auburn took the opening game of their 3 game set with Brooklyn by a 7-1 score.
Chi Cheng got the start for the Doubledays, and gave up a run on a walk, a single, a bunt single and a sacrifice fly in the second. A key strikeout limited the damage. Kyle Walter came on in the third and went 5 scoreless innings to give Auburn a chance to come back, but it took awhile. Auburn loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of second, but came up empty after a strikeout and a ground-out . Brooklyn starter Dillon Gee settled down and at one point struck out six straight Auburn hitters in the middle innings before coming out after 5 innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Adam Calderone doubled, stole third and came home on Manny Rodriguez' single to tie the game at 1. Brad Emaus followed with a 2 run rip, his 3rd homer of the post-season. Robert Leffler came on for Auburn in the eighth, and struck out the side around a single and a walk. The Doubledays then blew the game open in the bottom of the eighth as Brooklyn reliever William Morgan struggled for his control, plunking one, walking three and throwing two wild pitches. Luis Sanchez' bases loaded walk drove in one and Ben Zeskind followed with a 2 run single to make it a 4 run frame. Lefty Cody Crowell came on to retire the side, while striking out two, in the top of the ninth.
The teams travel to Brooklyn for Game 2. Brett Cecil is the scheduled starter for Auburn, and if a third game is necessary, Mark Rzepczynski will likely get the ball.
