Phelps the Slugger

A Phelps had a multi-homer game. But, this Phelps wasn’t Josh, or even Michael, who apparently can accomplish nearly anything. Instead, this Phelps was a second baseman who slugged his Mahoning Valley Scrappers to victory over Auburn.

Auburn 0 @ Mahoning Valley 3Boxscore

Auburn was shut out by Mahoning Valley despite limiting the Scrappers to three hits. However, when a team only gets three hits of its own it is hard to generate much offence unless you score on homers or errors, which is exactly what the Scrappers did. Two solo shots by second baseman Cord Phelps and an unearned run because of a passed ball by Karim Turkamani gave Mahoning Valley their three runs and the victory.

Andrew Liebel started and went 2 innings. He struck out one and gave up Phelps’ first homer. Evan Crawford went 3 innings. He allowed one hit and surrendered the unearned run. Jon Cryer pitched a scoreless inning before Charles Huggins went 1.1 innings and allowed Phelps’s second shot. Matthew Daly then pitched the last 0.2 innings without allowing a baserunner. Meanwhile, Auburn didn’t get a runner past second base with their three hits, which consisted of doubles by Jonathan Del Campo and Christopher Hopkins and a single by Turkamani. The Doubledays drew two walks and struck out 12 times.
