The affiliates had some good pitching tonight. Fabio Castro pitched six shutout innings, Alsn Farina started and did well. Tim Collins was outstanding, again, in relief. Henderson Alvarez and John Anderson also pitched well.
Las Vegas 4 Salt Lake 11 - Game 1
Brian Burres got the start but was gone after one batter in the fourth. Burrs allowed five runs on six hits in 3 innings. Sean Stidfole relieved Burres but he gave up three more runs in just two thirds of an inning and Vegas were down 8-0. Vegas scored two runs in the fifth, Russ Adams and JP Arencibia hit back-to-back doubles followed by an RBI single from Buck Coats.
Adrian Martin came on in the fifth having been called up to take Bill Murphy's roster spot. But he gave up two runs in two thirds of an inning. Randy Ruiz hit a two run home run in the sixth. But that was it, an 11-4 final. Adams and Arencibia had two hits each.
Las Vegas 6 Salt Lake 4 - Game 2
Las Vegas jumped out to a lead in game 2, Ruiz and Jason Lane doubled and Aaron Mathews singled in a run to make it 2-0. The 51's padded their lead in the third when Brett Harper hit a three run home run. Wade Miller had pitched hitless ball for two innings but Salt Lake put together three stright singles to lead off the bottom of the third. One run scored on a ground ball but then Terry Evans hit a three run home run and now it was a 5-4 game. Miller loaded the bases again in the fourth but he escaped without giving up a run. In the fifth Lane and Harper singled with Lane moving to third. Mathews then hit into a double play scoring the insurance run. Miller came back to strike out the side in the fifth, Bryan Bullington pitched a shutout sixth and Jeremy Accardo a shutout seventh for the save.
Lane, Harper and Mathews had two hits each.
Good pitching by New Hampshire, Fabio Castro pitched six strong innings and Celson Polanco, David Shinskie and Leon Boyd each pitched a shutout inning in relief. The game was scoreless until the eighth inning when the Fisher Cats scored two runs without a hit, five walks in one inning are great when you only have five hits in the game. Sean Shoffit had two hits to bump his average to .238, Jeroloman and Emaus were hitless and now their batting averages are down to .280 and .320 respectively. But worry not, New Hampshire is always a tough place to hit in the cool April weather.
This was another game with excellent pitching. Alan Farina got the start after pitching last season in the bullpen, he pitched four innings and gave up one run on two hits and two walks. Tim Collins followed with three perfect innings with six K's. Bobby Bell and Danny Farquhar added a shutout inning each.
The Jays were losing 1-0 in the seventh when back to back doubles by Moises Sierra and Kevin Ahrens tied the game. In the eighth Darin Mastroianni singled and scored on a double by Eric Thames. Thames then scored on an error.
Dunedin had just six hits.
Lansing 3 South Bend 1 - Game 1
Henderson Alvarez had a shaky start, three hits and one run allowed in the first inning. But then he settled down and gave up three hits over the next four shutout innings. Michael Barbara pitched two shutout innings to get the save.
In the fifth the Lugnuts scored three runs, Tylor Pastornicky had a two out double; Brian Van Kirk singled him home to tie the game. Johermyn Chavez doubled Van Kirk to third and Jon Del Campo doubled in both runs to put Lansing ahead 3-1.
Van Kirk was 3-4, Chavez was 2-4, both doubles.
Lansing 2 South Bend 4 - Game 2
John Anderson got the start in game two and was cruising until he gave up an unearned run in the third. In the fourth Justin McClanahan hit a two run home run to give Lansing the lead. Anderson was victimized by his defense again in the fifth, with two outs he walked a hitter and an error and a single later Lansing were down 3-2. Matt Daly gave up an insurance run in the sixth.
Anderson gave up three hits in his five innings and no earned runs. Lansing had five hits, McClanahan had two.
