Day two of the minor league season looked a lot like day one. Las Vegas again rode good pitching to beat Salt Lake. The Dunedin hitters still haven't found their bats and took another bad loss. Lansing again went to extra innings and again lost. New Hampshire did not get the chance to do it again as they were rained out.
Stars of the night were JP ARencibia, Rey Gonzalez and Kenny Wilson.
Ray Gonzalez started and pitched well, he went six innings and gave up three runs, two earned. He held Salt Lake off the board until the fifth inning when a two-out passed ball allowed the first run to score. The first two hitters of the sixth registered a single and a triple but Gonzalez limited the damage to two runs. Gonzalez gave up five hits and no walks in his six innings, he also had five K's.
The 51's scored all their runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth Brettt Wallace led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Jeremy Reed. JP Arencibia singled on a ground ball to score two, Chris Lubanski doubled to add a third run and Jesus Merchan singled to make it 4-0.
In the fifth inning Luis Figueroa led off with a single and Wallace walked. Brian Dopirak doubled to score both runs. Dopirak moved to third on a Reed single and scored on another single by Arencibia.
Josh Roenicke pitched two perfect innings and Jesse Carlson pitched the ninth while allowing a double.
Las Vegas had 13 hits, including two each by Figueroa, Dopirak, Reed, Arencibia and Lubanski. Arencibia had three ribbies.
New Hampshire at New Britain - postponed
The Dunedin hitters are off to a very slow start. On Thursday they were kept off the bases for six innings. On Friday they had one hit through six innings. They had three hits on Thursday and five on Friday. Most worrisome was the 13 strikeouts they racked up. Travis D'Arnaud and Mike McDade each had a hit are they each are hitting .286. No-one else is hitting over .200.
Andrew Liebel started and gave up all three runs, 2 earned, over 3.1 innings.
Tyler Pastornicky again played shortstop and led-off, Justin Jackson played second and hit ninth.
Lansing 3 Dayton 4 - 12 innings
For the second night in a row there was free baseball in Dayton. And for the second night in the row Dayton were able to win in extra's. On this night a two out error by Oliver Dominguez, Lansing's seventh error of the night, allowed the winning run to score. The Lugnuts had been living dangerously, in each of the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth innings the Dragons got the lead-off hitter on base and the Lugnuts walked the tightrope until the twelfth.
Earlier Lansing took the lead in the third inning. Sean Ochinko doubled to drive in Ryan Schimpf who had been hit by a pitch. However a lead-off home run in the bottom of the inning tied the game off starter Matt Fields. The game turned ugly in the fourth, the Lugnuts committed three errors to give up a run and trail 2-1. In the fifth another error with a couple of hits gave Dayton another run and the Luggies were down 3-1. In the top of the eighth Lansing's first two hitters, Kenny Wilson and Ryan Goins, singled and they both scored on a one out double by Eric Eiland.
Fields gave up three runs, one earned in 4.2 innings. Scott Gracey pitched 2.1 shutout innings, Brian Slover and Aaron Loup added two more each. Steve Turnbull took the loss.
Lansing outhit Dayton 13-9. Wilson, Glenn, Fuenmayor and Goins had two hits each.
