A 2-2 and night for the North American affiliates thanks to some 8th inning dramatics made for an interesting night. Plus, Brian Jeroloman didn't hit safely but reached base 4 times. How did he do it. All this, and more, in MINOR LEAGUE UPDATE.
Las Vegas 5 at Salt Lake 10
This one was over before you could say "Salt Lake Bees." The fifth batter Reidier Gonzalez faced deposited a pitch over the wall for a grand slam and that was that. For good measure Gonzalez also gave up 3 in the second. All told he recorded 10 outs, while giving up 12 hits and 9 runs, 8 earned. He struck out one and walked a batter, and has now 64 runs in 69 innings. Zach Jack was effective in relief, relatively speaking, allowing only 1 run in 3.2. Meanwhile the offense would eventually pick stuff up, but by then it was too late. Jorge Padilla, Brian Dopirak and JP Arencibia all had two hits. Both of Dopirak's were for extra bases, a double and a home run, while Arencibia had a solo shot. He allowed two runners to steal in the first though. Brad Emaus doubled and walked.
Akron 6 at New Hampshire 9
What the AAA game lacked in dramatics this one made up in spades. New Hampshire took an early lead with runs in the 3rd and the 4th as two of the Cats ten walks cashed, before Akron struck for 4 in the 5th on two two-run homers. New Hampshire answered with single runs in the bottom of the 5th and the 6th, thanks to a leadoff walk and hit by pitch (followed by 3 other walks.) Things shifted back Akron's way in the 7th as they struck for two, before the Fisher Cats put things away for good in the 8th after, you guessed it, two leadoff walks, followed by two singles and a Shawn Bowman three-run homer put things away. Tim Collins shut the door in the 9th, allowing two hits but recording all three outs on strikeouts. New-ish Jay/FIsher Cat Ronald Uviedo didn't fare quite as well; he was cruising through 4 before giving up those two home runs in the 5th. His final line was 5 ip, 6 h, 4 er, 2 bb, 3 k. The Cats had 10 walks which led to 9 runs in 8 innings on 7 hits. Bowman with his home run and Darin Mastroianni accounted for four of those hits, two apiece, while Darin drawing two walks (and a stolen base) to Shawn's one free pass. Brian Jeroloman went 0 for 0 with 4 walks, scoring twice, while Daniel Perales walked twice.
Dunedin 6 at Daytona 4
The 8th was the pivotal inning once again. After falling behind 2-0 and 4-3, Dunedin rallied for 3 in the 8th on a clutch Mark Sobolewski single to put this one away. Adeiny Hechavarria and Travis d'Arnaud both went 0 for 5; Adeiny's OPS drops to .547. Other D-Jays stepped up though, and by other Jays I mean Mark Sobolewski, who went 3 for 4 with a home run and drove in 4. The D-Jays could only muster 4 other hits, including Mike McDade's single and walk and John Tolisano's double plus two walks. For good measure Brian Van Kirk drew 3 walks, which might be the best Brian walking performance in another organization, but not here. Andrew Liebel started and only went 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, a walk and two k's. Alan Farina got the win after recording 3 of his 5 outs via the strikeout. Matthew Daly struck out only one but didn't allow a baserunner to nail down the ninth-inning save.
Bowling Green 5 at Lansing 4 - 10 innings
The affiliates run of late inning heroics (well, except for Las Vegas) had to end sometime, and it did in Lansing. Things were knotted at four after nine but a one out triple for Bowling Green in the 10th would prove the difference. Lansing was the third straight affiliate with 7 hits, but they neglected to draw a ton of walks to offset this. Balbino Fuenmayor had 2 of the hits and none of the walks, while Kenny Wilson and Ryan Goins combined to score the four Lugnut runs. Goins singled and walked and Wilson doubled and walked twice; both scored twice. Both also stole a base, as did AJ Jiminez. Chad Jenkins was adequate, allowing 9 hits and 3 runs in his five innings. He walked one, struck out two and got 6 of 11 outs in play via the grounder.
