Jays farm clubs went 3-3 on Saturday. Notable was the 6 RBI performance by Fisher Cats Left Fielder Eric Thames.
Losing pitcher Zach Jackson (2-2) gave up 6 runs (5 earned) in 6 innings of 12 hit pitching, including serving up 2 home runs. Our out of this world boys (the 51s) didn’t help matters in the field with errors by Mayorson and McCoy each ultimately producing unearned runs.
Scoring 9 runs just doesn’t mean what it used to, especially in the Pacific Coast League. Las Vegas managed a more than respectable 15 hits for the 7,545 home fans. Mike McCoy slammed 4 hits (1 2b, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Manny Mayorson added 3 (1 2b, 1 R, 1RBI). JP Arencibia had two hits, including a 3 run homer to center field. Chris Lubanski and Brad Emaus each added solo round trippers while Brian Dopirak, Aaron Mathews and Raul Chavez had 1 single each.
The 51s are in 3rd place in the Southern Division of the Pacific Coast League with a 38-45 (.458) record, 11 games out of the lead.
New Hampshire 15 New Brittain 7
Winning pitcher Danny Farquhar (2-2) followed a 5 inning effort by starter Ray Gonzalez that saw the lead change three times and allowed 6 runs for visiting New Britain in front of 5,625 anxious Fisher Cats home fans. Then, New Hampshire broke the game wide open with 3 runs in the 6th and 6 runs in the 7th. Closer Alan Farina came in and threw a three up three down 9th inning to put the lights out for New Brittain.
Eric Thames was the batting standout for the evening with 6 RBIs. He hit a 3 run homer and added two run producing singles. All of the FisherCats except DH Brian Jeroloman had hits on the evening. In addition to Thames, multi-hit performances were turned in by Jonathan Diaz, Jonathan Jaspe, and Adam Lowen.
The FisherCats are 48-34 (.585) in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League, 2.5 games out of the lead.
Dunedin vs Brevard (postponed due to rain)
The Dunedin Blue Jays are first half champs of the Florida State League North Division. They are 4-5 (.444) and are 3.0 games out of the lead for the second half.
Winning pitcher Matt Fields (2-3) turned in 5 innings of 2 run baseball including 4 strike outs. Closer Steve Turnbull stunned 4,580 South Bend fans with a snappy three strike outs in the 9th inning to tighten up the win for the Lugnuts.
Yan Gomes had 2 RBIs with a double, and center fielder Chris Hopkins had three hits, including a double as well. Ryan Goins added an RBI single and Kevin Nolan added an RBI and two hits. Balbino Fuenmayor hit a double, and Kevin Ahrens, Ryan Schimpf and Justin Jackson added singles.
The Lugnuts are 6-3 (.667) in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League, .5 games out of the lead.
1,661 Batavia home town fans saw their team shut out by outstanding Doubledays pitching including a four strike out performance by winning pitcher Casey Lawrence (2-0). Auburn Pitchers Zach Outman, Travis Garrett and Drew Permison added great pitching allowing only 1 hit in the last three innings.
Markus Brisker had two hits including a 2 run homer. Steven McQuail added a solo 4 bagger in the 8th inning. Matt Johnson and Yeico Aponte chipped in singles for the Auburn effort.
The Doubledays are 8-8 (.500), 1 game out of the lead in the Pickney Division of the NY Penn League.
GCL Blue Jays 4 GCL Phillies 7
Nicolas Purdy (0-1) suffered his first loss in a 7 hit 6 run outing over 4 innings. Milciades Santana and Alex Pepe added two innings of 1 run 2 hit ball.
Travis Snider continued his rehab assignment in Dunedin by getting a lead off single in the first inning. From there on, the GCL Jays would muster only four additional hits including two doubles by Pierce Rankin and singles by Gari Pena and Daniel Arcila.
GCL Blue Jays 3 GCL Phillies 4
Losing pitcher Jose Vargas (0-1) suffered four runs and 7 hits in 4.1 innings pitched. Daniel Barnes and Alesone Escalante stopped the bleeding allowing only three hits between them in the last 2.2 innings.
Rehabbing Travis Snider went 1 for 4, waiting until the 7th inning to single on a ground ball to right field. He was doubled off on a ground ball to end the game. First baseman K.C. Hobson was the only multi-hit batter for the Jays with a solo Home Run and a single. Ronald Meledez, Carlos Ramierez and Gari Pena added singles.
The GCL Jays are 5-7 (.417) in the North Div. of the Gulf Coast League, 3.5 games out of the lead.
