Pitching prospects dominated on a night that saw the affiliates go 3-3.
Tacoma 9 Las Vegas 4
Las Vegas continued its tough stretch of ugly losses as the bullpen allowed five runs in the final three innings of the game. Brad Mills started things off with four runs allowed in six innings but then Winston Abreu and Danny Farquhar melted down. Only Rommie Lewis remained unscathed with a scoreless innings sandwiched between the two ugly innings. At the plate, David Cooper went 1-for-3 with a double and two walks. Ryan Budde went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Adam Loewen had one hit, one walk, one stolen base and (of course) one strikeout.
New Hampshire 7 Portland 3
Joel Carreno surpassed 100 Ks on the season with 9 Ks over 6.0 innings of work. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks. Anthony Gose had an interesting night with two hits and a stolen base, but he also got caught twice and whiffed twice. Moises Sierra had two hits, including his 12th double and 12th homer. He drove in two runs and stole a base. Mark Sobolewski had two hits, including a homer and three RBI. Travis d'Arnaud went 0-for-2 but walked twice.
Dunedin 4 Daytona 3
Drew Hutchison's Florida State League debut was a success with just one unearned run allowed in 6.0 innings. He allowed five hits and one walk while striking out five batters. Hutchison induced nine ground-ball outs and just one fly-ball out. Frank Gailey provided two shutout innings but Wes Etheridge made things interesting in the ninth with two runs allowed. At the plate, Justin Jackson went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Sean Ochinko hit two doubles and drove in two. Chris Hopkins went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Lansing 6 Great Lakes 1
Casey Lawrence had an outstanding start. He gave up just one run in 7.0 innings and allowed three hits and one walk. He struck out five. Brandon Berl continued his string of strong performances out of the 'pen with two shutout innings. Offensively, Michael Crouse was 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Gari Pena, Oliver Dominguez, and K.C. Hobson each had two hits. Jake Murphy was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Salem-Keizer 8 Vancouver 1
The Giants' affiliate beat up on the Canadians. Taylor Cole allowed four runs in 3.0 innings. Nick Purdy then gave up four runs in 3.0 innings; he gave up seven hits, including three homers. Bryan Longpre gave some relief with two scoreless innings of relief. Pierce Rankin had two hits, including a solo homer. Jonathon Berti also had two hits, one of which was a triple. Shane Optiz and Stephen McQuail also had hits. Randy Schwartz replaced Balbino Fuenmayor after just one at-bat and struck out in each of his three at-bats.
Danville 4 Bluefield 3
Starter Mitchell Taylor made some strides after a rough first outing of the year last week, but he still took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) in 4.0 innings. Noah Syndergaard came in for some relief and did not allow a run in 5.0 innings. He struck out five batters and induced eight ground-ball outs (just one was in the air). At the plate, Gustavo Pierre had a nice day with two hits and a stolen base. He DH'd, so perhaps not having to worry about his fielding had a positive impact. Andy Fermin led the offensive with a 3-for-5 game and all three hits were doubles. Kellen Sweeney and Cody Bartlett also had hits. Art Charles, Mr. All or Nothing, was 0-for-4 with 4 Ks.
