It was a splitsville Friday for the affiliates as they won four and lost four.
Gwinnett 5 Buffalo 3
Lawrenceville, GA - The tone was set for this one after the top of the first as the Bisons wasted a leadoff triple by Dalton Pompey. They would get the game's first run on an RBI double by Alex Hassan. Their second came in the sixth on a double play ball by Sean Ochinko but Ochinko's next at bat was worse as he hit into a 5-4-3 triple play in the eighth just before a Jon Berti fielder's choice scored their final run. Hassan and Matt Hague had two hits and a walk apiece while Hague was also hit by a pitch. Andy Burns also had two hits and Pompey added a walk to get on base twice. Ochinko and Berti had the other hits but Roemon Fields was 0-for-5, Jonathan Diaz went 0-for-3 and Ty Kelly struck out pinch-hitting.
Phillippe Aumont (3-5, 2.88) was not very good against the G-Braves in this one. He threw a two-hitter over four innings but one of the hits was a three-run homer. He walked six and struck out four while inducing five groundball outs. Ben Rowen contributed two shutout innings of one-hit relief while whiffing two but Gregory Infante gave up the fifth run on two hits with one strikeout in the seventh. Colt Hynes allowed a hit and plunked another over two-thirds of an inning and Steve Delabar walked a batter to load the bases before getting a strikeout to end the eighth.
New Hampshire 3 Bowie 2 (11 Innings)
Bowie, MD - The mighty K.C. came through in this one as K.C. Hobson grounded an infield single to second to score a Shane Opitz base hit with the decisive run. Their first two runs came on an Emilio Guerrero base hit and an error in left field. Hobson had the lone two-hit effort while Kevin Nolan had the lone extra-base hit with a double. Derrick Chung singled and walked while Matt Newman had the other base hit. Ryan Schimpf walked three times, Christian Lopes walked twice and Jorge Flores walked once. Flores and Lopes also stole bases.
Taylor Cole was swift enough to last seven innings against the Orioles affiliate by coughing up a run on seven hits and two walks. He had just two K's but the infield handled 11 of his 15 outs in play. Danny Barnes served up a solo homer among his two hit allowed with a 1-1 K/BB total in the eighth to blow the save. Dustin Antolin (2-0) allowed just one hit and struck out three over two shutout innings. Blake McFarland overcame a hit and struck out two in the 11th for save number 11.
Dunedin 4 Brevard County 1
Dunedin, FL - Not all the good pitching prospects are gone...yet! Sean Reid-Foley (1-4, 4.66) walked four batters but did not give up a hit over 5-1/3 innings after striking out six and getting five of his six outs in play on the grass. Brady Dragmire stranded two runners for Reid-Foley to end the sixth but he lost the no-hitter and the shutout by allowing two hits but he whiffed three in 1-2/3 innings. Who broke up the no-hit bid? Former Blue Jay Robinzon Diaz! I think the guy he was traded for is doing alright. Arik Sikula went two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout but left two walks for Wil Browning, who stranded those runners and worked around a walk with two strikeouts in 1-1/3 for his 16th save.
Derrick Loveless blasted one over the wall for a two-run poke to score a Mitch Nay double in the second inning and Jorge Saez drove in the other pair of runs with a base hit in the fourth. Saez added a double and another single for a three-hit game and Matt Dean contributed a pair of singles. Loveless had a walk to go along with his dinger while L.B. Dantzler doubled and walked. Anthony Alford and Dickie Joe Thon also got base hits but Richard Urena and J.D. Davis were a combined 0-for-8 against the Brewers affiliate.
Lansing 15 Beloit 5
Lansing, MI - The Lugnuts obliterated a 4-3 deficit with 12 straight runs to hammer the Brewers affiliate. Base hits by Michael De La Cruz and David Harris along with an error got Lansing on the board with three runs in the second inning. Dawel Lugo celebrated his last game in the Jays organization with a base hit to score a Harris triple to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth. The go-ahead run was scored on a balk in the sixth before a Chris Carlson single and an error led to three more runs. Lugo increased his trade value with a sacrifice fly to cap off the five-run rally. Josh Almonte belted a three-run home run to start the seventh before Lugo upped his stock to Cliff Pennington levels with a run-scoring base hit. Ryan McBroom would plate two more with a double. Harris had four hits and threw out a runner at the plate from left field. Lugo, McBroom, D.J. Davis and Jason Leblebijian all had two-hit games. Carlson and Austin Davis drew the only walks.
Tom Robson pitched the first four innings and yielded two runs (one earned) on four hits (including a homer) and a walk. He struck out three and recorded five outs of the infield variety. Justin Shafer (5-2) served up two solo dingers among three hits and walked a batter but he struck out a pair. Dusty Isaacs gave up two hits and walked a pair, leading to a run but he struck out one in the eighth. Jose Fernandez struck out two in a perfect ninth.
Vancouver 5 Spokane 1
Vancouver, BC - The C's are within a game of .500 in the second half after taking the middle game of this three-game set. Josh Reavis made his first at-bat in Vancouver count with a single to score an Earl Burl III
base hit with the game's first run in the third inning. Reavis would
later score what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch. Reavis
would score another run in the fifth when he singled, went to second and
third on wild pitches and coming home on a Justin Atkinson sac fly. Carl Wise singled home another run in the sixth before Atkinson stole home in the seventh on the front end of a double steal with Ryan Hissey taking second. Burl, Atkinson and Reavis all had two hits on the day and Hissey was on twice with a single and a walk. Andrew Guillotte was 1-for-4 at the top of the order while Lane Thomas and Sean Hurley drew walks. Gunnar Heidt was 0-for-4.
Tayler Saucedo (1-1, 1.80) was too spicy for the Rangers affiliate, going six shutout innings and scattering three hits, a walk and a plunk. The big lefty had three strikeouts and split his 12 outs in play between the infield and the outfield. Fellow southpaw Stuart Holmes pitched a shutout seventh without incident but Michael Kraft made things too interesting with two hits and three walks over two innings. He lost the shutout in the eighth but struck out a batter in finishing things up.
Elizabethton 5 Bluefield 0
Elizabethton, TN - Luis Sanchez (0-1, 3.60) had a decent outing, surrendering two runs over five innings against the Twins on five hits and two walks. His strikeout and groundout totals were six and five respectively. Geno Encina gave up a run on two hits but racked up five K's over two innings. Matt Smoral walked three and allowed two unearned runs in the eighth but he did strike out a pair.
Rodrigo Orozco and D.J. McKnight had two hits apiece with McKnight getting a double. Gabriel Clark, Deiferson Barreto and Freddy Rodriguez also added one to the hit column. Yeltsin Gudino, Christian Williams and Jacob Anderson came up empty in their four at-bats. Matt Morgan was 0-for-3.
GCL Phillies 7 GCL Blue Jays 2
Clearwater, FL - Jose Nova (0-1, 8.59) was knocked around for five runs over three innings. He gave up a homer among seven hits but did not walk anyone while striking out one. Kelyn Jose gave up the other two runs (one earned) on two hits while also whiffing one in two innings. Juan Nunez struck out a batter and faced the minimum nine hitters over three shutout frames.
The Jays got their only two runs in the seventh on a Nash Knight home run which plated a Levi Scott walk. The other hits were two Reggie Pruitt doubles and singles by Scott and Owen Spiwak. Kalik May and Jake Thomas were 0-for-4 while Juandy Mendoza and Cliff Brantley were 0-for-3. Bryan Lizardo was 0-for-1 while Miguel Almonte was hitless in two at-bats.
DSL Orioles 6 DSL Blue Jays 0
Boca Chica, DR - Jose Acosta
(1-3, 3.45) was annihilated for five runs (four earned) on three hits
and four walks and did not strike out anybody in 1-1/3 innings. Wilton Mueses was
whacked for another run on three hits and two hits and three walks,
allowing all three inherited runners to score. He also did not record a
strikeout in 1-2/3 innings. Orlando Pascual gave up three hits but struck out three over three scoreless frames. Tommy Henriquez issued just one walk and whiffed three in two shutout innings. Jose Agrinzones struck out one in a perfect ninth.
Francisco Rodriguez had a hit and a walk while Christian Peguero heard ball cuatro twice. Kevin Vicuna singled and stole a base while Manuel Herazo and Jesus Navarro had the other hits. Norberto Obeso had a walk but Sterling Guzman and Antony Fuentes were 0-for-4. Andres Guerra and Antonio Concepion went a combined 0-for-4.
