Ryan Gold hit a grand slam in the sixth inning. Not only was that notable, it left Gold a double short of the cycle. He got that double in the eighth for a grande cycle. All the Blue Jay affiliates who played won. Buffalo had the night off. Ryan Noda went 4-4. Yennsy Diaz pitched well too. Here is your abbreviated Good Friday minor league update.

Buffalo

Buffalo had a scheduled day off.

Hartford 3 New Hampshire 5

The Fisher Cats came back from being 3-1 down in the seventh to win. Alberto Mineo had two hits and drove in three runs. Vinny Capra had two hits and drove in the other two runs. Brandon Grudzielanek also had two hits.

Yennsy Diaz keeps showing why the Jays protected him this winter. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four hits, one walk, five K's. Hartford did score three runs off him but all were unearned due to a two error play.

Lakeland 2 Dunedin 6

Ryan Noda went 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Cullen Large had two doubles and now has reached base safely in his last 13 games for Dunedin. Riley Adams homered, his second of the season, a two run shot.

Turner Larkins started and went five innings with two runs allowed. He has just two K's. Brad Wilson pitched three hitless innings in relief.

Dayton 4 Lansing 12

It was the Ryan Gold show, hitting for the cycle, including a grand slam. In total Gold drove in seven runs. Reggie Pruitt stayed hot with three hits as did Otto Lopez.

Sean Wymer pitched six innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Sean Rackoski got the last four outs having just been recalled from extended. Connor Law was promoted.

CANADIANS: Sad to hear that former @vancanadians RHP Andrew Case has retired according to #bluejays... One of, if not the best guy I have ever come across in this game.

Anybody know what the plan with Kloffenstein is?

Dusty Isaacs is off to a great start in the Bisons' bullpen. Aside from a rough 2018, he's had some very good seasons since being drafted in 2014. He's 27, but is another guy we might see with the Jays in 2019, especially if they make a few trades of veteran pitchers, or have injury trouble.

Kloffenstein barely pitched last year. I assume he is headed for Bluefield or Vancouver.

Vancouver would be great.

I love that Alberto Mineo is taking full advantage of the retirement of Max Pentecost - maybe he has a future as a backup catcher.

Cullen Large and Riley Adams are making bids for early promotion.

Regarding Gold: He was a 2016 HS pick. He could always hit, good avg and bb/k rates. I thought that he was 5'9" 180lb. He is 5'11" and 215lb and playing a lot of 1B, so tall enough for 1B. I don't know about his defensive catching skills. He has V little power and speed but is a LH hitter.

He is putting up good numbers like Yan Gomes did in similar little playing time. He currently leads the team with 9 rbi.

A Kirk and H Danner are getting ABs at C and DH. Gold plays mainly 1B. So all 3 are being developed.

Gabe Moreno should be in the catching mix eventually.

The 2017 draft had only 3 HS picks signed. H Danner, P Morris and Davis Schneider. None are following in the elite footsteps of Bo and Groshans. The youth was added in the Int'l signing period.

That 2017 heavy college draft has produced players that are progressing well. They don't need to be rule 5 protected until the end of 2020.

After tonight, Kirk now has 10 BB to 3 K. This is my type of player.
Nigel - Friday, April 19 2019 @ 10:02 PM EDT (#372848) #
Agreed Kelekin. Even accounting for control issues for pitching in the Midwest League, all of Kirk, Groshans and Lopez are showing excellent strike zone control skills.

"Cullen Large and Riley Adams are making bids for early promotion."

Knew they were doing well, didn't realize how well until looking at the FSL leaderboard. Adams has been the 2nd best hitter in the league thus far, Large 3rd.

Both a bit old, with Large a half year older. That said, 2018 Red's 2018 1st round pick India is only 6 months younger than Adams.

I can understand Large staying in Dunedin for a bit with his missing most of last year. Im not really sure what Adams is doing there. I thought Large was semi interesting when he was in Vancouver. He offers a bit of everything offensively (without any standout skills) and seemed solid, if unspectacular, defensively. There might even be a bit more power there than hes previously shown.

Watched the Lansing game today. Kirk ups that BB:K to 11:3. Groshans looked great at the plate, and seems to cover decent ground in the field, but his arm accuracy was definitely quite poor. Brodt prevented a potential error or two. Unfortunately I haven't watched consistently so no idea if he's consistently a poor thrower or not. Also, Otto Lopez missed a HR by a foot at best.

Ryan Noda was hit by a pitch and had to leave the game.

Was there a rain delay in the Dunedin game? Noticed Pearson only at 2 IP.
bpoz - Saturday, April 20 2019 @ 08:22 PM EDT (#372908) #
I hope Pearson is fine. Today 41 pitches in 2 innings. Last time 59 pitches in 5 innings. Of the 41 pitches how many in the 2nd inning? So maybe a delay or they thought the pitch count was too high.
Gerry - Saturday, April 20 2019 @ 08:35 PM EDT (#372909) #
Pearson did not pitch much last season so he is on a limit this year. It looks like the Jays have him on a five inning, 2 inning rotation. This was his second two inning start.

I'm not shocked. This is a front office that is very careful with its assets.

Pat kept talking about the improved defense. It improved the most when Gurriel was sent back to AAA.

Before this fades, I was surprised no-one noted the Seinfeld influence on the title.

If they wanted to give Guerrero more bats to get ready they should have checked the weather report for Buffalo games.

No one mentioned the Simpson's reference in #2 Brumfield's thread " Otto Drives the Bus " either.

Certainly noticed the Seinfeld reference, but am embarrassed to have missed the Simpsons one.
