You know, it didn't hit me until just now that it was kind of funny that "Joltin' Joe" was the face of Mr. Coffee.

That is all.

I was in my 30s before I found out that Cuyler's nickname was pronounced "kye-kye" rather than "kee-kee." Makes sense, tho.

I forget where I read it, though it was probably in Stephen Jay Gould's essay on Dummy Hoy, that the nickname came about because Cuyler was a horrible stutterer, and really struggled with his last name. Ah, the famed sensitivity of professional ballplayers!

Cool Papa Bell was a great player.

Well, he was a very good player, and had a long career. I'd say his best comparison is Lou Brock - he had the same longevity, the same sizzle in his legs and also a decent amount of power in his bat. Like Lou, he'd probably have collected 3000 hits and several hundred stolen bases if he'd played in the majors. He was a better outfielder than Brock was. And of course James Bell had the nickname - which I agree is the best, edging Frank Baker.

"Cool Papa", actually, was the long form of the nickname. His friends just called him Cool.
