Candidates again thanks to the rankings at The Baseball Page ... These are their top nine, no changes this time!

Would a shutout be possible?  Unlikely, I guess.

As much as I'd personally love to vote for Darrell Evans, Schmidt was a better and more powerful hitter than Mathews and every bit the defender Robinson was. I don't see how anyone else could get a vote -- nothing against Brett, Boggs, et al, but being #2 on this list is nothing at all to be embarrassed about!

As much as I loved watching George Brett (even when he pounded the Jays in '85) Schmidt was the best.

Every time I see a 'best thirdbasemen' thing though I think back to how sweet it could've been if Gillick pulled the trigger on Wade Boggs when he had the chance.  He said in an interview that he was going to take Boggs in the Rule V draft after the 1980 season (306/401/364 at AAA) but decided against it at the last moment.  After 1981 he decided to take Boggs if available but Boston pulled him back at the last moment, then Boggs went on to hit 349/406/441 in '82 and the rest is history.

Oh, I don't know, John --

"Gade Boggiorg" just doesn't have the same R/L combo ring to it as "Gance Mulliniorg," does it?
